[Bug 1766758] Re: Gnome software can uninstall some programs but not others

2018-05-02 Thread Ken T
So, I've freshly installed the release version of Xubuntu 18.04 and
applied updates, and now Gnome-Mines uninstalls as expected.

However, the "SGT Puzzles Collection" which came bundled with Xubuntu
still refuses to uninstall properly. Gnome Software says it's removed,
yet that cluster of games still appears on the XFCE menu and is
launchable.

Cheers,
Ken.

[Bug 1754819] Re: Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items located under top-level menu categories

2018-03-13 Thread Ken T
Jeremy, it seems that this issue has already been reported upstream, but the
issue has been closed and I don't yet know how to reopen it:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/issues/1

I'd edit the desktop.in.in files directly myself, but am a newcomer to
the process for doing so. Any pointers to how-to's, etc?

Also, on the issue of Gnome having two upstream bugtrackers, I note that
according to the following link:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Initiatives/DevelopmentInfrastructure/
... they say that their plan is "Shortly after the new solution (Gitlab) is
setup, disable issue reporting in Bugzilla (as well as new accounts,
milestones, etc)."
So I guess we can just use Gitlab for issues going forward.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754819] Re: Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items located under top-level menu categories

2018-03-13 Thread Ken T
Jeremy, Daniel,

Thanks for your replies. As per Daniel's suggestion, I've run apport, &
have updated the bug title and description.

I'll also lodge a bug report upstream as Jeremy suggests, and report
back with a bug number.

Jeremy, you've suggested that there are potentially multiple bugs here -
I'm not sure I agree with this. I hope that by amending the bug
description that I've summed up the over-arching issue, and that filing
a bug report for each instance of the issue wouldn't be necessary.
Please let me know your thoughts on this.

With this in mind, I disagree with Daniel's assertion that the main
issue in this bug report has already been fixed.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754819] Re: Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items located under top-level menu categories

2018-03-13 Thread Ken T
** Description changed:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie)

- See attached screenshot. Searching within settings is currently not very
- useful / intuitive, as it only finds results at the level of top-level
- menu entries / categories, but not the items within them.
+ See attached screenshot. Searching within settings is currently not as
+ useful / intuitive as it could be, as it finds results for some items
+ located within the top-level menu entries / categories, but not all
+ items.

- As an example, searching for "uni" brings up Universal Access, but the
- same search tool produces nothing when searching for items within the
- Universal Access category (e.g. "contrast", "screen", "cursor", etc).
+ Being able to find all menu sub-items from the search tool without having to
pore through individual menus is the ideal outcome, and is my intention in
raising this bug report - the individual examples below are merely instances of
this broader pattern. Please note that these examples seem to be changing
rapidly, as overnight updates have made some search terms return valid results
when only a few days ago they didn't.
+
+ Examples of search terms that don't work / work fully:
+ - cursor (no items found; should return "Universal Access")
+ - high (ditto)
+ - sound (only returns the "sound" menu; should also return "Universal Access"
+ - sharing (brings up some valid results, but not "Notifications" which
includes the item "desktop sharing".
+ - desktop (ditto)
+
+
+ Examples of search terms which do work properly:
+ - contrast
+ - screen
+ - size

[Bug 1754918] Re: Budgie / Gnome file manager "unable to access" a USB stick that works fine under Linux Mint LTS

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
I've just tried to plug in 3 known-working USB sticks into this UB daily
build, with content on the USB sticks that I access from other *buntu
machines, and with each stick I got the same result - "unable to access
 - read-only file system".

So that's a pretty significant bug, I'd say.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754819] Re: Searching within Gnome Settings only works for top-level menu entries

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
This issue has been partially improved in the overnight update, but
inconsistently.

As some examples of the broader pattern I'm talking about here, searching for:
- "screen" now brings up a plausible list of options, including screenshot,
universal access, displays, etc.

- "contrast" brings up Universal Access. All good.

- "cursor" brings up no result, despite also being an option under Universal
Access.
- "sharing" brings up "sharing - control what you want to share with others",
but does not bring up "desktop sharing".
- "banner" brings up no result, even though "banner designer" is an option
under Notifications > Applications.

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
Confirmed - after I uninstall VLC via (Gnome) software, usr/bin still
contains files called "vlc" & "vlc-wrapper".

As seen under a daily build for Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 32-bit, using
Software v3.27.92

[Bug 1754827] [NEW] Gnome settings - color: No ability to add new color profile via GUI

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie 18.04)

The "Color" page within Settings has a "Learn More" link, which points
to the Ubuntu Desktop Guide. Within this, I found a page called "How do
I test if color management is working correctly?", which suggests that
it's possible to click on a button called "Add profile" to enable a test
colour profile (and presumably other profiles also).

The current development version of Gnome, as seen in the latest daily
build of Ubuntu Budgie 32bit, has no such button visible within Settings
> Color. See screenshot.

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754823] [NEW] Gnome Settings is inconsistent with how it respects spelling differences due to locale

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie)

See attached screenshot, which shows a couple of examples of this issue:

1) different spellings of the same word within the one screen ("color" and
"colour").
2) spellings of words according to British English ("Behaviour") and American
English ("maximized").

Ideally, all text strings would respect the locale / language settings
selected upon installation (in my case, British English / Australian
locale). This would apply to words such as (color/colour, words ending
in ized/ised, and any other words which are spelt/spelled differently
between British and American English).

Thanks,
Ken.

[Bug 1754819] [NEW] Searching within Gnome Settings only works for top-level menu entries

2018-03-10 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie)

See attached screenshot. Searching within settings is currently not very
useful / intuitive, as it only finds results at the level of top-level
menu entries / categories, but not the items within them.

As an example, searching for "uni" brings up Universal Access, but the
same search tool produces nothing when searching for items within the
Universal Access category (e.g. "contrast", "screen", "cursor", etc).

Ken.

[Bug 1754816] [NEW] Gnome: Under "universal access", trying to turn screen keyboard on doesn't do anything

2018-03-09 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in the latest daily build of 32bit Ubuntu Budgie)

Under "universal access", various features work as expected (e.g turning
on high contrast, or large text). However, pressing the toggle button
for the on-screen keyboard has no effect.

Please note that another Ubuntu Budgie user has noticed this issue also
- see comment #5 from Bug #1687900, dated 6th October 2017.

Further, this bug is possibly related to Bug #1726453.

[Bug 1754812] [NEW] Software: default categories displaying very few entries

2018-03-09 Thread Ken T
Public bug reported:

(As seen in Software v3.27.92, as present in the latest daily build of
32bit Ubuntu Budgie for 18.04).

With "All" selected by default at the top of the screen, clicking on any
of the buttons for software categories (productivity, communication &
news, etc) reveals only a handful of entries, when there are usually
truckloads of them. See attached screenshot as an example.

However, clicking on "Installed" software shows 53 entries, so at least
that seems to be working OK.

Ken.
