[Bug 2043027] Re: Wacom Intuos S stop working after upgrading to Ubuntu 23.10
I was also able to download the upgrade per Jeremy Bicha's instructions, which seems to have resolved the issue for me as well. (Again, mutter=45.2-0ubuntu3, on Ubuntu 23.10.) Thanks again to all involved! (Also, my thanks, and an apology, to Gonzalo Rodríguez Carrera. I neglected to thank you specifically in my message of a few days ago. I should have included you, especially as it was your reporting of the initial issue that brought me here, and allowed me to implement the fix in the first place.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2043027 Title: Wacom Intuos S stop working after upgrading to Ubuntu 23.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2043027/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 2043027] Re: Wacom Intuos S stop working after upgrading to Ubuntu 23.10
First, thank you to Jeremy Bicha and Steve Langasek, and anyone else involved in bringing the update to mutter. I've been trying for the past few days to install the update. I enabled -proposed, but every time I try to install the newer version of mutter (whether directly by the version name, or by "mantic-proposed", I get this message: The following packages have unmet dependencies: mutter : Depends: mutter-common (>= 45.2-0ubuntu3) but 45.2-0ubuntu2~really45.0 is installed The set of fixes does not include updating mutter-common; when I check versions in aptitude, it does not list that version. I've tried uninstalling both mutter and mutter-common, but when I go to reinstall, it all defaults back to the 45.2-0ubuntu2~really45.0 versions. While I do see 45.2-0ubuntu3 in the list of versions for mutter, mutter-common only lists the version I have installed. All that said, I know that the seven-day window will soon pass, and maybe this will just become part of the regular updates; however, if this problem has prevented others from testing, my guess is that it will hold things up until there's been direct verification. I realize this thread is not for support for this type of problem -- i.e., there may just be some command I'm not familiar with that would resolve this whole thing, and so there may be no larger issue at all other than my own lack of experience -- but I wanted to mention this in case it isn't just me. I would be happy to install and test the new package, but until either mutter-common is also updated, or I can find out what I'm doing wrong, I can't provide any more feedback. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2043027 Title: Wacom Intuos S stop working after upgrading to Ubuntu 23.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2043027/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 2043027] Re: Wacom Intuos S stop working after upgrading to Ubuntu 23.10
I encountered this exact problem a few weeks back (Ubuntu 23.10, Wacom Intuos CTH-680) but it was fixed by installing mutter 45.2-0ubuntu1, as indicated. However, this morning, the exact issue reappeared. I tried updating to the latest version of mutter (45.2-0ubuntu2~really45.0) via aptitude, but it has not resolved the problem. My guess is that either the patch was removed with the shift to the new version, or something else updated that has created a new conflict. I created this UbuntuOne account specifically to file this issue; thus if I am incorrect in adding to this thread rather than creating a new one/filing a new bug, my apologies. Please let me know what further information I should provide, or where else to post the issue. [Bug 1973226] [NEW] UI doesn't allow setting Left Ctrl as Compose
Public bug reported: In Ubuntu 20.04, I was able to set Left Ctrl as my Compose key using gnome-tweaks. For context, my modifier settings are: * Caps Lock is Ctrl ('ctrl:nocaps') * Left Ctrl is Compose ('compose:lctrl') * Both Shift keys enable/disable Caps Lock ('shift:both_capslock') which gives me both a Ctrl key on both sides of the keyboard and an easily-accessible Compose key. ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1973226 Title: UI doesn't allow setting Left Ctrl as Compose To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/1973226/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Steps to reproduce: 1) In system settings, in the "Screen display" section, change "Scale" to "100%" 2) Open a window (e.g. a browser) and resize to most of the screen 3) Close laptop screen and wait for it to go to sleep 4) Open laptop screen 5) Observe that the browser window is now only the top-left quarter of the screen, not its original dimensions Reproduced on 19.04 and 19.10 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 19.10 Package: gnome-shell 3.34.1-1ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.3.0-18.19-generic 5.3.1 Uname: Linux 5.3.0-18-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu8 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Sun Oct 20 15:47:21 2019 DisplayManager: gdm3 InstallationDate: Installed on 2019-02-09 (252 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.10 "Cosmic Cuttlefish" - Release amd64 (20181017.3) RelatedPackageVersions: mutter-common 3.34.1-1ubuntu1 SourcePackage: gnome-shell UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to eoan on 2019-10-20 (0 days ago) ** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug eoan -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1848930 Title: Windows resize when sleep and wakeup on 100% display scale To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1848930/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1772677] Re: gnome-shell filling up syslog with thousands of entries with stack traces ending in osdWindow.js (lines 206/207 in bionic, lines 223/224 in cosmic)
One other bit of info I thought about that could be contributing is my horizontal monitor is hooked up to a cheap 4 port HDMI switch (not a true KVM switch, it's HDMI only). This seems to cause the monitor to flicker back and forth during boot / loading the splash page as it looks (to my untrained eye) like it can't decide if the HDMI is hooked up to a monitor or not. Once the login page is displayed though that particular problem is gone until the next boot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1772677 Title: gnome-shell filling up syslog with thousands of entries with stack traces ending in osdWindow.js (lines 206/207 in bionic, lines 223/224 in cosmic) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1772677/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1772677] Re: gnome-shell filling up syslog with thousands of entries with stack traces ending in osdWindow.js (lines 206/207 in bionic, lines 223/224 in cosmic)
I just got hit with this bug as well. Fresh Ubuntu 18.10 install on a Desktop (Ryzen 2995x, 32GB RAM, Vega 64, 250GB NVMe /, and 1TB Evo 860 SSD /home) with two monitors (1 vertical using DP, and one horizontal using HDMI), only thing I did post install was install a few flatpaks from flathub (Discord, Telegram, VSCode, Slack), and a snap (CLion) as well as a Rust toolchain (https://rustup.rs). Went to bed, went to work the next morning, and when I came up the computer appeared to be frozen as it wouldn't wake from sleep. After a hard reset and login, I noticed I couldn't do an update do to "disk full". Checked `df` and saw `/` was full. Quick checking of dirs lead to `/var/log/syslog` being 230GB from a single night/day of no use! My plan is to do a re-install (with Kubuntu which is what it was prior to this install), however if there is something else I can provide that would help track down this bug I will (assuming I see a message prior to the nuke/pave).
[Bug 1809407] Re: [nvidia] After resume the unlock screen is a black background with pixel garbage. Bitmap garbage flashes on the screen when interacting with anything.
I did some random trial and error debugging. There's always a login screen on console 1 and there's always a desktop GUI on console 2. It's sometimes waking from sleep into display 2 while still locked. There's a dock, a system menu, and random bitmap garbage. Hitting CTRL-ALT-F1 goes to the login screen. After logging in, it jumps to a normally working display 2. Not sure if it's related: CTRL-ALT-fkey is sometimes generating app keyboard events rather than switching consoles. Installing 18.04 completely corrupted my system and I had wipe the disk. This isn't an old crusty installation. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1809407 Title: [nvidia] After resume the unlock screen is a black background with pixel garbage. [Bug 1807265] Re: Screen locking issue
I discovered that the issue seems to not actually be the lock screen. Last night the screen timed out but did not lock as the lock is set to happen at 30 minutes but the blank screen at 10 min. [Bug 1807265] [NEW] Screen locking issue
Public bug reported: Upgraded to Cosmic Cuttlefish a little over a week ago, Now every time that the computer locks the screen, the screen is mostly blank and shows only the launchpad with favorites at the left, and the status icons at the top right. Clicking on the apps shows the app for a moment before being hidden again. The system drop down menu shows the usual information except the system tools / lock / power icons with a pause button displayed in their place but all is disabled except the pause button which suspends the computer. Upon waking again the computer is still locked. Have not discovered a key sequence that does anything when in this state. Cannot even switch virtual terminals or desktops. [Bug 1767995] Re: Horizontal scroll doesn't honor Natural Scrolling preference
This affects me too. I noticed it as soon as I upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04.1. It took me a while to find a workaround, so I'll document it here to help others. I believe there are other possible ways around this, but this one worked for me: First, I ran synclient, to find the current scroll values. For me they were: VertScrollDelta = -73 HorizScrollDelta= 73 As a test, I ran this command: synclient HorizScrollDelta=-73 That fixed the problem, but only until the next reboot. To run this every time I started up, I created a script named FixNaturalHorizontalScroll which contained just that line, and I saved that script in /usr/local/bin. I used this command to make it executable: sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/FixNaturalHorizontalScroll Finally, I had to manually run gnome-session-properties in order to add my new script as a startup script. I would be happy to help debug this. It's going to be a pretty frustrating introduction for new users coming from other systems. [Bug 1704895] [NEW] service output sometimes missing when "User=" used
Public bug reported: This repros on a clean and up-to-date 16.04.2, but not on ubuntu-artful- daily-amd64-server-20170618, so it looks like this was fixed (possibly upstream) sometime between 229-4ubuntu17 and 233-6ubuntu3. Create the test files `/etc/systemd/system/test.service`: ``` [Unit] Description=test service After=syslog.target After=sysinit.target [Service] ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/test User=nobody [Install] WantedBy=sysinit.target ``` and `/usr/local/bin/test`: ```bash #!/bin/sh echo 'stdout msg' echo 'stderr msg' 1>&2 # With the next line commented out, rarely see any journal output for the failed service (though it still gets forwarded to syslog every time). # With the line uncommented, will usually see output, and only occasionally see partial output (1 out of the 2 lines) or no output at all. #sleep 0.$RANDOM exit 11 ``` (and remember to `chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/test`). Now as root try to start the service a few times. It will always fail, but the bug is that the `stdout msg` and `stderr msg` lines are absent from the journal. The expectation is that all lines output by the failing service should be present - these lines are often critical for diagnosing why the service has failed to start. The lines do, however, always get forwarded to syslog. ``` root@ip-172-31-6-192:~# cat /etc/systemd/system/test.service [Unit] Description=test service After=syslog.target After=sysinit.target [Service] ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/test User=nobody [Install] WantedBy=sysinit.target root@ip-172-31-6-192:~# cat /usr/local/bin/test #!/bin/bash echo 'stdout msg' echo 'stderr msg' 1>&2 # With the next line commented out, rarely see any journal output for the failed service (though it still gets forwarded to syslog every time). # With the line uncommented, will usually see output, and only occasionally see partial output (1 out of the 2 lines) or no output at all. #sleep 0.$RANDOM exit 11 root@ip-172-31-6-192:~# systemctl start test ; sleep 1 ; systemctl status test ● test.service - test service Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/test.service; disabled; vendor preset: enabled) Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Tue 2017-07-18 00:45:06 UTC; 1s ago Process: 23557 ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/test (code=exited, status=11) Main PID: 23557 (code=exited, status=11) Jul 18 00:45:06 ip-172-31-6-192 systemd[1]: Started test service. [Bug 1677725] [NEW] Error report on bootup is useless to me
Public bug reported: On booting my system, I see dialog reporting a "system program error" with no further information, and is asks me if I want to report this. I have no basis on which to make the choice, because I have been completely unable to figure out what problem is being reported. The few times I told it to report, I got no feedback at all. This does nothing to help me do any of the things I want to do about this situation: 1. diagnose or even identify the problem 2. determine if the message got you you, or to anybody for that matter 3. determine if there is an official fix 4. supply additional information 5. Fix the problem, whether on my own or based on an official fix I'm attaching an image of the dialog I see, as it's all I can offer by way of identifying the source of the message. [Bug 1677042] [NEW] Grub recovery boot root prompt is unstable
Public bug reported: I've seen this on two systems: Xubuntu on dual Xeons, and Ubuntu on an I-7. When I choose "advanced options" -> "recovery mode" in Grub, and then "root shell prompt" in the resulting booted system, I cannot expect it to be functional for long. I can do a few things, but even if I do nothing, it can break in a way that takes it back to the place where I selected "root shell prompt" but it is completely unresponsive to the keyboard or mouse. Or nearly so. I can get a reboot with the three-finger-salute. Usually. Even without that, I've been interrupted by status messages garbling the screen and other stuff I'd love to suppress. At least usually, I would. I'd like some control. When I'm already fighting system problems, this is even more annoying than usual, but it happens on healthy systems too. [Bug 1583088] Re: Randomly corrupt characters in Unity8
so question was asked from a previous dupe bug about repro steps. afaict, there are no specific repro steps and the specific letters which get corrupted seems random. But I've been using unity8 quite regularly, and I've seen this several times so doesn't seem infrequent. Might be worth noting that once a letter gets corrupt it seems corrupted everywhere for that rendering - for instance on the power down prompt, the letter "f" is repeated in the word "off" in 2 different places - in one experience, no other letters were corrupted expect "f" in all 4 locations. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-desktop in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1583088 Title: Randomly corrupt characters in Unity8 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-desktop/+bug/1583088/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I can add more information to this. It is affecting me on a fresh Lubuntu 15.04 32-bit install as well. Evince version: 3.14.2 The pdf that is affected is here: http://media.wizards.com/2014/downloads/dnd/5E_CHARACTERSHEETSV3.ZIP It's from: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets Unzip the file, and open DnD_5E_CharacterSheet - Form Fillable.pdf in Evince. In Lubuntu by default this is the default application to open it. Click in any field and enter some text. Short or long, doesn't matter. It will succeed. Press tab, enter, or click away from the field. Your mouse will still work in evince, but no keyboard input will. Keyboard works fine in any other application. While I'm sure that's the problem with a few other packages, today was the first time I saw udev complain during a dist-upgrade. so the root cause of the media-hub issues is thot to be that notifications is a client of media hub (so lots of create/destroy) which in turn leaves dead objs on dbus which results in the mutex lock signature seen in comment #4. [Bug 93847] Re: Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor
FWIW, on my (6-year-old) desktop under 14.04 LTS running on an Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E7200 @ 2.53GHz × 2 System Monitor still takes around 20-30% CPU time (I checked both g-s-m and top). I have two bits of useful debugging info: First, if I change the update interval to 3s CPU usage in g-s-m stays around 8%. At around 6s it falls to 1%. Leaving the update interval at its fastest (1s), if the Processes tab is selected but I remove all columns from view (no processes are actually shown), the cpu usage of 20-30% is still there. But if I move to the Resources tab CPU usage goes down significantly, to 5% consistently, yielding instead to 5-20% CPU utilization in Xorg depending on how big the window is. Since the only thing left showing the Processes tab is the average load for 1,5,15 min I'm wondering if it somehow has to do with that, or if g-s-m is doing extra work on this tab that it isn't doing on others. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-monitor in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93847 Title: Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-system-monitor/+bug/93847/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1311257] Re: Wifi cannot connect or unstable after suspend 14.04
I have the same issue. Upgraded 12.04 to 14.04 on a Lenovo T530. Hm... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2182058p=12824696#post12824696 That indicates a different solution might work - replace killall wpa_supplicant above with nmcli nm sleep false.
