[Bug 1799679] Re: Nvidia driver causes Xorg to use 100% CPU and huge lag when dragging OpenGL app windows

2023-12-06 Thread Rodrigo
I am using 545.23.08 and this problem is still affecting me. It's
surreal to buy a graphics card for over a thousand dollars and have the
drivers be unable to move a window without lag

[Bug 1799679] Re: Nvidia driver causes Xorg to use 100% CPU and huge lag when dragging OpenGL app windows

2022-10-14 Thread Rodrigo
Happy 4 years for this bug!

I have a 3070ti, the desktop is empty with nautilus, and moving the window is
frustrating, too laggy.
However I can play steam games without problems or train ia models.

[Bug 1717241] Re: nautilus crashed with signal 5 in _XReply() - drag and drop crash

2017-09-25 Thread Rodrigo Alconchel
Dear Bug Triager,

I have now realized that the Xorg team won't look into Xinerama issues
as they claim that it's deprecated in favor of RandR. Please feel free
to mark this bug as Won't Fix as that better reflects the reality of the
situation from the standpoint of the Ubuntu developers.

FOR ANYONE ELSE WHO MAY CARE ABOUT THIS:

At some point I realized that both Xinerama and the Compiz window
manager where causing this problem. Besides the bug issue reported
above, the setup was causing very slow graphics performance and a few
crash reports.

Sticking with Nvidia proprietary drivers, I made the switch to
BaseMosaic (instead of Xinerama) and moved away from the Unity/Compiz
combination and on to Gnome-Classic/Metacity (Non-composite window
manager). For Gnome Classic the package to install is gnome-session-
flashback, and you need to use it because Unity requires a composite
manager while Gnome Classic does not.

This nearly solved all problems, but then I found resume from suspend
not working properly. Resume from suspend was working in the sense of
restarting the system again (I could ssh into it), but the display
monitors remained black. The culprit was the Nvidia propietary driver,
which I finally removed in favor of the nouveau driver. Last but not
least, a bit of shifting monitors around with xrandr, and problem
solved!

To sum up, use:

- Gnome Classic Desktop Environment
- Metacity Window Manager
- Install a dock launcher like cairo-dock if you are missing Unity's dock
- Nouveau driver
- NO xorg.conf file!
- Xrandr if you are not getting the correct monitor layout
- place the xrandr command in an executable shell script, and include the
script in the startup apps.

** Description changed:

+ NOTE: Ubuntu won't fix this bug, but if you are interested in a work
+ around, read the last comment!
+
+ ORIGINAL BUG REPORT:
+
  To reproduce on a fully updated Ubuntu Desktop 16.04 system with Unity:

  Step 1: Start nautilus

  Step 2: Drag and drop a file to any target: to a different folder in the
  same nautilus window, to another folder in a different nautilus window,
  etc. ... The target is irrelevant.

  Expected to happen: File successfully copied or moved.

  Actually happened: Mouse pointer changes to a hand with a plus sign.
  Source file moves only slightly and then freezes, never makes it to the
  target. Application locks up for a few seconds, and then the application
  window vanishes. Crash report is then generated.

  Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS

  Nautilus package version: Installed: 1:3.18.4.is.3.14.3-0ubuntu6

  Additional (and maybe relevant) notes:

  1) Drag and drop function seems broken generally, across applications,
  not just in nautilus. For instance, same behavior appears when trying to
  drag and drop a Thunderbird message to another Thunderbird folder, or
  when trying to drag and drop a cell or a range of cells within the same
  Libreoffice Calc spreadsheet.

  2) Interestingly, application windows can be dragged and dropped across
  display monitors (3 monitor setup), without any problems.

  3) I am using proprietary NVIDIA drivers, but please do not suggest
  using nouveau drivers, because they work horribly (heavy display
  corruption, pixelated screen, and constant mouse flickering)

  4) Graphics setup: NVIDIA Quadro NVS 450 card with twin GPU and 4 heads.
  NVIDIA proprietary driver version 340.102 (installed from ubuntu
  repositories, not from proprietary NVIDIA installer; this is the correct
  driver version for this card according to NVIDIA documentation). 3
  monitors connected in a simple horizontal layout.

  5) Nautilus extension installed: nautilus-share  0.7.3-2ubuntu1

  6) Attaching a nautilus debugging log from terminal command:
  G_DEBUG="all" NAUTILUS_DEBUG ="All" nautilus

  7) Attaching X Org log file with -logverbose 6 option

  8) Attaching xorg.conf configuration file

- NVIDIA propietary driver version 340.102 (installed from ubuntu

2015-11-16 Thread Rodrigo
As part of the big bug review for 16.04 LTS, I have tested this on 15.10
and the bug is still there.

Working on: Firefox, Gedit, LibreOffice, HardInfo.

Not working on: Unity, Nautilus, Calculator, Unity Tweak Tool, Opera,
Synaptic.

In Synaptic and Nautilus I have seen the loading icon (sand clock) with
the right theme.

[Bug 1113420] Re: Alt+ window menu shortcuts cannot be disabled

2015-11-12 Thread Rodrigo
** Description changed:

  I find the key ergonomically very useful (it can be pressed with a
  thumb without moving any of the "letter" fingers) and I would like to
  use it for many custom keyboard shortcuts (there is a reason why it
  plays such a big role in Emacs and the whole OS X for that matter).

  Currently, though, is hardcoded to activate window menu entries
  (such as +F for the file menu, +E for the edit menu) and there
  is no way to surpass this functionality in all the applications.
  Personally, I find these shortcuts quite useless - they take you to
  "copy", "paste", and "open file" which have standard shortcuts anyway
  (with the exception of preferences, which for some reason don't have a
  standardized shortcut even though that's often the only thing a person
  looks for up there).

  Expected behaviour
  -

- What I would like to see is a global option to disable these alt+ menu
shortcuts to free up the key for other uses (similar to the option
already available in gnome-terminal, only global). Preferably, activating this
option would also remove the first-letter underlining in the menu to indicate
to users that they can't acess it through shortcuts.
-
- (I marked nautilus for apport to collect my version numbers, but this affects
most applications - didn't know what the right target is)

[Bug 1510587] [NEW] Nautilus crashes when delete a file in a folder which is a symbolic link to another filesystem

2015-10-27 Thread Rodrigo Renie
Public bug reported:

Nautilus crashes with an "assertion error" whenever accessing a folder,
which is a symbolic link to a folder in another filesystem, and then
deleting any file inside that folder (the file is not deleted).

Steps I used to reproduce de problem in my machine:

1) /dev/sda1 partition mounted on root folder with XFS filesystem;
2) /dev/sda2 partition mounted on /mnt/data folder partition with EXT4
filesystem;
3) create a folder "/mnt/data/test" and the empty text file
"/mnt/data/test/file.txt";
4) in your home folder, create a symbolic to the "test" folder above with "ln
-s /mnt/data/test";
5) open the symbolic link folder with "nautilus /test";
6) delete the "file.txt" file (pressing the delete button) and watch nautilus
crashing with the following error:

nautilus: malloc.c:2909: __libc_malloc: Assertion `!victim ||
mchunkptr)((char*)(victim) - 2*(sizeof(size_t)->size & 0x2) || ar_ptr
== (mchunkptr)((char*)(victim) - 2*(sizeof(size_t)->size & 0x4) ?
((heap_info *) ((unsigned long) (((mchunkptr)((char*)(victim) -
2*(sizeof(size_t) & ~((2 * (4 * 1024 * 1024 * sizeof(long))) - 1)))->ar_ptr
: _arena)' failed.

2012-10-22 Thread Welton Rodrigo Torres Nascimento
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1 - Maximize a Naitulus windows;
2 - Change to list view (CTRL-2);
3 - Browse to a folder with such number of entries that you must scroll to view
them all;
4 - Try to double-click the last visible entry.

RESULT:

It's impossible to double-click the item, because overlay scrollbars are on top.
This doesn't occurs on a non-maximized window, because overlay scrollbars are
rendered outside of the window.

WORKAROUND:

Change to Icons view or use the keyboard.

[Bug 830840] Re: Chat window will not open

2011-12-27 Thread Rodrigo Virote Kassick
This seems to be an intermittent bug for men. Soon after login, the
message list appears to work ok -- click on a contact, it opens a chat
window, adds an entry to the notification tray.

Most of the times, the problem occurs after I open the first chat window
-- i.e. I start chatting with contact A; soon I need to send a message
to contact B, who is online. Clicking on the contact name or drag-and-
dropping the contact into an opened chat window does not work.

If contacts A and B started conversations with me and I only answered
them in the notification tray, I usually can open the chat window via
the notification bubble for *only one of the contacts*. Works the
first time only, then I can not open any other chat window.

Starting a chat via gnome-contacts works correctly.

Most of the times, the only solution to have the chat windows back is to
close all chat windows and the contact list, disconect from all IM
accounts, kill mission-control and then start all over again.

Curiously, after I opened the debug window to generate the log, I
figured I had regained the ability to open chat windows. Don't think
it's related, but 've never seen empathy get back to working
correctly...

[Bug 878859] Re: gnome applications grab mouse input when the menu bar is shift-clicked while gnome-settings-daemon is running

2011-12-05 Thread Rodrigo Exterckötter Tjäder
I have done some more investigation on this and found the following bug
report: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=650943

Clicking in the resize box triggers the mouse grab even when not running
gnome-settings-daemon. I have also tested with non-GNOME gtk2 and gtk3
apps, and it happens only in the gtk3 ones, so I'm reassigning this to
libgtk-3-0.

[Bug 876839] Re: Proxy GUI in 11.10 does not configure socks proxy for HTTP traffic

2011-11-24 Thread Rodrigo Moya
As I already said, gnome control center does not use GConf anymore for
this, since a year already, so what we need is a list of apps that still
use GConf, and we need to migrate them to use GSettings or, as a
fallback, make them use the correct GConf keys. This specific GConf keys
are not used anymore on the GSettings version, so even though we have
the GConf keys synced up with their corresponding GSettings keys (via a
plugin in gnome-settings-daemon), of course only the keys that are
changed in GSettings are synced. This means that the keys we don't use
will always have the same value in GConf.

So could people list the applications affected, or even better, add a
task to this bug for that specific app, so that the responsible for each
of those apps can have a look at patching it. But again, there's nothing
that can be done in gnome-control-center/gnome-settings-daemon

[Bug 833397] Re: indicator power displayed twice on panel

2011-11-15 Thread Rodrigo Moya
I'm not able to replicate this problem at all, so could someone please
test the patch I've added to the g-s-d package? To do so:

$ bzr clone lp:~ubuntu-desktop/gnome-settings-daemon/ubuntu g-s-d
$ cd g-s-d
$ bzr bd -- -b

when it finished successfully:

$ sudo dpkg -i ../build-area/*.deb

and then log out and see if my patch fixes it

shift-clicking in the menu bar as well.

[Bug 878859] Re: gnome applications grab mouse input when the menu bar is shift-clicked while gnome-settings-daemon is running

2011-10-21 Thread Rodrigo Exterckötter Tjäder
After some testing, I think it's related to some interaction between
gnome-settings-daemon and tiling window managers. I can trigger the bug
in awesome, dwm and scrotwm but not in Unity, GNOME and Openbox.

I don't think it's the same problem as bug #868400, their problem is
specific to the synaptics device, as someone mentioned that the touchpad
stopped working but the pointer nub in the keyboard kept working.

2011-10-21 Thread Rodrigo Exterckötter Tjäder
As I said earlier, I don't have a touchpad, so I don't have the disable
while type option, neither do I have syndaemon running.

But, when I went to gnome-control-center to check if I even had the
disable while type option available I noticed that clicking on the bar
at the top (the one with the search input box) makes gnome-control-
center grab the mouse input as well.

[Bug 878859] [NEW] gnome-terminal occasionally grabs mouse input

2011-10-20 Thread Rodrigo Exterckötter Tjäder
Public bug reported:

Since I updated to 11.10 last Friday gnome-terminal has been grabbing my mouse
input every few days.
First I noticed that my mouse clicks and movement stopped being noticed by all
apps, and the people in #ubuntu-x told me that it was likely a client had
grabbed the mouse, so I killed my running processes one by one, until killing
gnome-terminal solved it.
Today it happened again, my first measure was killing gnome-terminal, and that
solved it, confirming gnome-terminal is the culprit.
I have not yet noticed any pattern in what triggers the problem, and I'm not
sure on how I should act to find it out.

[Bug 864618] Re: sets $LANG to a language name

2011-10-19 Thread Rodrigo Moya
Martin, my plan was to fix the issues that that patch tries to solve in
g-c-c 3.2.1 and then completely remove this patch from the package. I
could just fix a couple, since the others seemed a bit risky for a SRU,
so the patch from Gunnar fixes this bug really for Oneiric users. There
shouldn't be any impact for stable users, since we are getting the list
of languages from another place anyway, so commenting out that call
doesn't really affect much. My plan is to completely remove this Ubuntu-
specific patch for Precise and, if possible, in a late SRU for Oneiric.

So, this should be safe, has been tested for a couple of weeks now. The
2 variables are initialized at the beginning of the function, so no
problem with that.

[Bug 876839] Re: Proxy GUI in 11.10 does not configure socks proxy for HTTP traffic

2011-10-18 Thread Rodrigo Moya
As with the banshee bug (which I just uploaded a fix for), this needs
changes in the applications, not gnome-control-center. We have stopped
using some of the keys, so their values are not changed in GSettings and
hence not propagated to GConf. Those apps should really check the host
for socks, and if it's not empty, use it. So I guess there's nothing in
g-c-c / g-s-d that can be done to fix this.

[Bug 845915] Re: All Settings is confusing

2011-10-11 Thread Rodrigo Moya
Yes, I already talked with John about this some weeks ago, and I asked
him to discuss it with the GNOME designers. I like the idea of this, but
not of just having a distro patch, so John, could you please discuss the
idea with the GNOME designers, please?

[Bug 861158] Re: After reverting to no proxy /system/http_proxy/use_http_proxy in gconf stays activated. i

2011-10-06 Thread Rodrigo Moya
Some of the keys that were used in GConf are no longer used (although
are still present in the gsettings schemas in gsetting-desktop-schemas),
so even though we are propagating the GSettings keys' values to GConf,
some have a different meaning. Banshee should check the host and
port keys for each proxy type (http, https, ftp) not the others. In
fact, use_http_proxy is not propagated.

We are removing the GConf plugin in gnome-settings-daemon for 3.4, and
removing all the keys that are not used, so Banshee should really use
GSettings ASAP.

For Oneiric, I'll have a look at having a fix.

Before setting it, can you please let us know what are the values for
sleep-inactive-ac-timeout, sleep-inactive-ac, sleep-inactive-

You can get the values fromt he command line with:

gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power $key
