[Bug 1082297] [NEW] Wrong permissions when using Save As

2012-11-23 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
===

1. Download a PDF from the internet.
2. When Firefox asks what to do with the file, choose the option to open it in
Evince.
3. Once the PDF is open in Evince, do a File Save as.
4. Observe that the file is created with the permissions 0400.

Correct behavior:
=

Evince should follow the same permissions model as other programs, using
the umask to determine the default permissions, which would be 0644 on a
default Ubuntu machine.

Impact of the bug:
==

Because of the incorrect permissions, it's impossible to directly
overwrite an affected PDF without manually fixing the permissions. It
makes no sense not to give the owner write permission by default, as any
situations where 0400 permissions were desirable would surely be corner
cases.

[Bug 936618] [NEW] eog crashes on launch

2012-02-19 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Every time I try to run eog, it crashes. The type of file I'm trying to
open doesn't matter.

The main window flashes briefly on the screen (for well less than 1s),
then there's a crash.

Normally, the crash is a segmentation fault. I do however have one
instance where the following was printed to the console:

[Bug 608515] Re: Can't establish audio or video calls

2010-12-16 Thread Scott Severance
@Scott Lockwood: Are you using 10.10? This bug is currently marked
invalid (see Omer's latest post for details). If you're experiencing
this in 10.10, please re-open this bug.

I personally would love to test this, but unrelated issues prevent me
from upgrading to 10.10. I think I'll just have to stick with 10.04 for
a while. At any rate, if this is still an issue in 10.10, it'd be good
to know.

Re: [Bug 240599] Re: Doesn't install GConf keys

2010-09-14 Thread Scott Severance
Yes, this happens in Lucid. However, I don't agree that this is a Yelp
bug. The .deb should make GConf entries where appropriate. Users
shouldn't have to read help in order to take advantage of the GConf
entries, especially since in every other program I know of, GConf
stuff isn't document in the Yelp help. It's documented through the
GConf schema.

@desiKn:

That doesn't explain why:

a) video works if I place a video call to myself (i.e., not going over the
network); and
b) audio calls don't work.

Your link points to bug 585151, which appears to be entirely unrelated
to this one. I only have a single video device (/dev/video0) and no TV
card or second camera or other complicating device.

[Bug 608515] Re: Can't establish audio or video calls

2010-07-23 Thread Scott Severance
ubuntu-restricted-extras is already installed. I deleted
~/.gstreamer-0.10 as instructed, but that didn't change anything.

Of possible interest: When I first deleted the dir, trying a video call
didn't re-create it. I then fired up Rhythmbox, which re-created it. But
regardless, nothing changed.

This seems to be an uncommon error (considering that Google isn't too
helpful). I just wish the error message were more informative about the
nature of the problem.

[Bug 608515] [NEW] Can't establish audio or video calls

2010-07-21 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When I try to place either an audio or a video call to a GTalk user, I
get the following error message:

Can't establish audio stream
There was a failure in the call engine
Technical details
Could not create the valve element

When I receive a call from a GTalk user, my webcam lights up for 0.5
s, then it turns off and I get the same error as above.

Google searches suggested installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, but that
made no difference; the error is the same.

[Bug 240300] Re: Tomboy shows the Search All Notes window on login under certain circumstances

2010-04-19 Thread Scott Severance
Raphael,

This bug is different from bug 112703, I think. This bug only occurred
when I was logging in via the fingerprint scanner. For some reason which
I no longer remember, I apparently didn't follow up on Pedro's requests
for more information, and I no longer have the capability of testing
whether this is still an issue, so the most appropriate status, I
suppose, is Invalid.

Bug 112703 is about multiple instances of Tomboy running, which I don't
think could have been the case in my situation.

[Bug 245716] [NEW] file-roller puts temporary files in the home dir instead of /tmp

2008-07-04 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a tarball with file-roller
2. Open a file within the archive without explicitly extracting it. (Such as by
double clicking the file)
3. Notice that the file is extracted to a directory ~/.fr-*
4. Close file-roller. If you used file-roller's GUI to exit, the temporary
file(s) and directory are deleted. However, if you kill it via SIGTERM or
logout without exiting file-roller (I presume that sends either SIGTERM or
SIGHUP), the temp files are left behind.

There are two problems with this:

1. file-roller should clean up its temp files on exit, regardless of the exit
method (with the obvious exception of SIGKILL, which can't be trapped).
2. The proper place for temporary files is /tmp. Dotfiles in $HOME are for
program settings and the like. In the event that file-roller doesn't clean up
its temp files, they just pollute $HOME and waste disk space. However, /tmp is
cleaned on boot (or is it in shutdown?), so pollution and wasted disk space is
minimized.

[Bug 240615] Re: Dead keys don't work when certain Greek keyboard layouts are in the selected layouts list

2008-06-19 Thread Scott Severance
Both GTK_IM_MODULES and GTK_IM_MODULE are unset (at least, they didn't
have any value when I echoed them from the terminal--if there's a better
way to test them, do tell). I Googled for GTK_IM_MODULES and tried a few
of the values I found, with no effect. It doesn't help that
GTK_IM_MODULES is apparently undocumented (at least, Google can't find
dicumentation), so I can only guess that it has something to do with
input methods.

Today when I was trying this, I discovered that in the terminal,
RightAlt5 produces (less shows this as 82AC), while in other
apps, nothing results.

[Bug 240615] [NEW] Dead keys don't work when certain Greek keyboard layouts are in the selected layouts list

2008-06-17 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

When the Greek Extended or Polytonic keyboards are in the list of
selected keyboard layouts, then dead keys don't work--even in unrelated
layouts. I've tested this with both the US International (AltGr dead
keys) and US Dvorak layouts.

By don't work, I mean that they produce no output themselves and don't
influence other keystrokes. For example, RightAlt5 should produce €
but it produces nothing. RightAlt' followed by e should produce é, but
it instead produces e.

EDIT: This is in Hardy.

[Bug 233918] Re: [vinagre] Keybinding changes don't persist across sessions

2008-05-30 Thread Scott Severance
I disagree for three reasons:

1) The GUI offers the option to be able to redefine keys. As long as the
option is there, it's a bug for it to not work.

2) Redefining keys is a standard part of GTK (or Gnome--I'm not sure
which). It's a handy feature that works everywhere else I've tried it. I
know that Gnome delights in removing useful features in the name of
simplification, but doing so is a Bad Thing.

3) I don't see how it's possible to design a full-featured VNC client
without at least one keyboard shortcut. Once you switch to fullscreen,
you have to have some way to get back out. Adding a button to switch
back to normal mode would either potentially get in the way or require a
VNC toolbar or something, which would break the fullscreen. Vncviewer
handled this situation well. If you hit F8, it would pop up a menu. One
of the items on that menu was one to send F8 to the remote machine.
(There are many thing that vncviewer does wrong, but this isn't one of
them.)

[Bug 232485] Re: Vinagre impossible to uses de F1 and F9 keys o the remote computer

2008-05-22 Thread Scott Severance
Probably the best thing would be to use a popup like vncviewer; in
vncviewer, hitting F8 pops up a menu with the various settings,
including an option to send F8. Furthermore, F8 is vncviewer's *only*
keyboard shortcut, AFAIK.

A VNC client is a bit like a terminal app. Its job is to stay out of
your way so you can forget it exists. Just like gnome-terminal needs no
chrome (no menubar, no scrollbar, no statusbar, etc.), a VNC viewer
should have the bare minimum chrome (except for an F8 menu or equivalent
and a way to connect) so that it stays out of the way.

[Bug 84007] Re: Cannot edit audio profiles without closing the list

2007-07-08 Thread Scott Severance
If you'll put the source package where I can get it, I'll be glad to
build an i386 package. I still haven't found out how to apply a debdiff,
so the debdiff is currently useless to me, unless I want to go through
and modify the source by hand (I don't).

[Bug 84007] Re: Cannot edit audio profiles without closing the list

2007-07-06 Thread Scott Severance
Neither Google nor Yahoo can tell me how to apply a debdiff to a source
package. How do I do that? Surely I don't have to manually go through
the debdiff and copy/paste the changes to the source directory!?

[Bug 84007] Re: Cannot edit audio profiles without closing the list

2007-06-28 Thread Scott Severance
Any idea when the fix will be released for Feisty? I'm doing my best to
wait (somewhat) patiently.

[Bug 108290] Re: theme manager: segfault when accidently choosing cursor theme on icon tab

2007-06-17 Thread Scott Severance
I just tested this with a regular install of Feisty and didn't get any
crashes.

[Bug 108290] Re: theme manager: segfault when accidently choosing cursor theme on icon tab

2007-05-23 Thread Scott Severance
I've tested it with the Feisty live CD and my buggy half-functioning
upgrade and haven't experienced any crashes. Apparently the other fix
worked.

However, it would be nice if something could be done about cursor themes
showing up in the theme manager in the first place. But that's an
upstream issue, isn't it?

[Bug 115131] When upgrade manager crashes, upgrade can't be resumed

2007-05-18 Thread Scott Severance
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: update-manager

My upgrade from Edgy to Feisty failed when the update manager crashed
(see bug #115122). When I tried to restart update-manager, it didn't re-
offer the upgrade, nor did it start the upgrade GUI. I don't know how
important the upgrade program (that powers the GUI) is, but it should be
possible to resume where the crash happened.

 Importance: Undecided

I'll try to remember once I upgrade. It'll be a bit before I have the
time to upgrade, though.

[Bug 108290] theme manager: segfault when accidently choosing cursor theme on icon tab

2007-04-20 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

When choosing an icon theme in gnome-theme-manager, cursor themes are
displayed in the list. Clicking one causes gnome-theme-manager to
segfault and brings down the GNOME session (sometimes leaving only the
wallpaper visible). I know that gnome-panel and nautilus both crash, and
I'm unsure what else crashes.

When logging in, GNOME hangs at the splash screen. I can't get back to
normal until I log in to a failsafe terminal session and run gnome-
theme-manager from there.

[Bug 82131] totem and totem-mozilla dependency problem

2007-01-29 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Currently, I have totem, totem-mozilla, and totem-xine installed, all at
version 2.16.2-0ubuntu1 (I'm running Edgy, by the way). I'm being
offered an upgrade of totem and totem-mozilla to version
2.16.2-0ubuntu3, but I can't upgrade due to dependency issues. apt-
get/aptitude/synaptic insist that I must switch to totem-gstreamer,
which is more incompetent than totem-xine. Clearly, something is broken,
because I've been using totem-xine since I installed Ubuntu (except for
when the Edgy upgrade unhelpfully reverted me to totem-gstreamer,
leading me to wonder for a while why I could no longer play the media I
was used to playing).
