To be clear, this bug is about Metacity compositing, not Compiz. As far as I know, it's Compiz that is the default compositing. Although as an aside I've been having trouble with Compiz disabling itself on reboot as well. -- Gnome panel (UNR) disappears with metacity compositor enabled

Also: I can confirm that sudo eject /dev/sdb works as expected. With palimpsest, unmounting the partition and then using the _third_ eject button works. However, unmounting the partition and the using the _fourth_ Detach device from system and power off button, results in exactly that happening
