To be clear, this bug is about Metacity compositing, not Compiz. As
far as I know, it's Compiz that is the default compositing. Although
as an aside I've been having trouble with Compiz disabling itself on
reboot as well.

I can confirm that sudo eject /dev/sdb works as expected.
With palimpsest, unmounting the partition and then using the _third_ eject
button works.
However, unmounting the partition and the using the _fourth_ Detach device
from system and power off button, results in exactly that happening
Based on information I came across on the MyDellMini forum, I think the card
reader is not actually on the USB bus. Maybe PCI, PCMIA or something? I am also
seeing this bug as of August.
Is there anything else I can do to contribute to this bug?

John: I retried the bug, and I also can get it to go without the separate
workspace condition. So never mind on that part. I can confirm the bug is not
limited to firefox, as I also see it when generating pdfs with rubber called

I am also experiencing this bug with Hardy 8.04.1. It occurs exactly as
described in the original post for pdf files opened from both firefox
and rubber (called from the gedit-latex-plugin) so I don't think it's
specific to firefox. I do not have desktop effects enabled. Thanks!

Aha! In trying to repeat the bug I discovered a condition. It only
seems to occur if a pdf is already open in another workspace. I didn't
notice this before because I always have a pdf or two open for
reference in another workspace.
So:
