[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

2024-04-10 Thread Thierry MACHICOANE
Running "journalctl -b0 | grep MetaSyncRing", I confirm having this bug,
which appeared roughly 2 w-ago after classical update.

This implies lack of responsiveness (up to 2 seconds lags) in terminal
as well as in GUI, especially when dragging objects, scrolling, double-
clicking and so on.

Configuration:
 * 6.5.0-27-generic #28~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Mar 15 10:51:06
UTC 2 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

[Bug 1712798] Re: login return to login screen if APT::Install-Recommends=false

2017-10-25 Thread Thierry B.
After some trials and errors, I found the culprit. The is only ONE
package missing to open the session normally :

gsettings-ubuntu-schemas

So the conclusion is : if it is needed to properly open an X session
then it SHOULD be a true dependency from another package, not just a
recommended package.

Currently in artful gsettings-ubuntu-schemas is a dependency of the
following packages:

$ apt-cache rdepends gsettings-ubuntu-schemas
gsettings-ubuntu-schemas
Reverse Depends:
  unity
  unity-settings-daemon
  unity-control-center
  indicator-sound
  indicator-datetime
  gsettings-ubuntu-touch-schemas
  ubuntu-desktop

In this list no package is installed except ubuntu-desktop, and it is
the only package in this list that set gsettings-ubuntu-schemas as a
recommended packages.

So TMHO, gsettings-ubuntu-schemas SHOULD BE

[Bug 1292398] [NEW] multi-monitor : second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2014-03-14 Thread Thierry Mallard
Public bug reported:

(Noticed on Ubuntu 14.04 beta 1 GNOME)

Using gnome-control-center I can change the position of the second without

[Bug 1238346] Re: on bootup wrong keyboard layout is recognized

2013-10-21 Thread Thierry Seewald
Just to give some precision:

when I display the Présentation de l'agencement (keyboard layout or
layout presentation or whatever) who displays a keyboard, its a french
keyboard which is displayed and when I hit the left corner alphabetical
key on the keyboard it shows that the left corner key is hit and that it
is an a but in all programs it's a q which appears.

And when I deselect and reselect French keyboard on the new keyboard
icon (and french is the only one that appears as a choice in this icon),
then the keyboard is correct.

[Bug 1184789] [NEW] empathy re-asks authorisation for facebook everytime

2013-05-27 Thread Alex THIERRY
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 13.04 with Empathy 3.6.4-0ubuntu4.1:

What I expected to happen:
After having configured my facebook and google talk accounts in online
accounts, i should have logged in facebook to talk with my friends.

What happenned instead :
Everything was fine with my Google Talk account, but Ubuntu/Empathy told me
that Ubuntu needed an authorisation I already gave to access my facebook
account. So I could not see nor talk with my facebook friends.

Additionnal information:
I have configured my accounts on Pidgin too : it never happened. Pidgin had
never lost the authorisation for any of my online accounts. Perhaps there could
be a solution with its authentification process?

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 800136 ***

Are you aware you propose to solve an ergonomy bug using commands that are
definitely not user-friendly ?
If i wanted to type commands for administrating my desktop system, i would have
installed a Gentoo, a Slackware or an Archlinux...

Regards.

[Bug 861272] Re: No easy way to configure default monitor (regression)

2011-10-10 Thread Emmanuel THIERRY
Hello,
Thanks for having registered the bug. However, please note that even using the
technique you propose (that sounds simple), it is actually very complex ! Yet,
i don't think that my gnome configuration is odd, i don't use to hack this part
of my system.
There is no anchor to drag and drop the top panel, and when trying to drag it,
it looks to be locked. There is no button to unlock it, even when right
clicking to the panel (at least in my locale). The only way i found to move it
was to right click on the bar = Properties = Uncheck the Extend box, then
it is draggable so drag it, then recheck the Extend box. Of course, i had to
do that for both top and down panels. I hope that you understand how far it is
unergonomic.
The topic you linked shows that gnome people doesn't care much about it, you
shouldn't rely on them to fix it...

[Bug 861272] [NEW] No easy way to configure default monitor (regression)

2011-09-28 Thread Emmanuel THIERRY
Public bug reported:

Whenever a new monitor is plugged, the desktop may switch to an inappropriate
screen. System settings should permit to change the default monitor, but they
don't.
The gnome-display-properties tool (or its equivalent) has regressed from its
Hardy version, which permitted to set the default monitor. While the current
one, provided by default in the gnome-control-center package, has much less
features.
This is a very bug for normal users which shouldn't have to:
 - Install a third party package to do this very basic operation
 - Rely on drivers and tools of their graphic card, which might not provide a
specific tool to handle multi-screen or other basic features
 - Hack their xorg configuration, as it is proposed in these kind of tutorials
[http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/multi-ecran] (i haven't check on ubuntu.com, but i'm
sure it is exactly the same)

Note that this bug should be considered as important because Ubuntu
people often argue that their system is usable by human beings, and
then because the tested distribution is an up to date 10.4 LTS (so still
supported).

[Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA

2011-04-18 Thread Thierry Carrez
I have the same issue as Dustin. x201 on Ultrabase docking station,
connected to a Samsung 225BW monitor.

If I connect the laptop to my smallish 17 1280x1024 Sony, I manage to
hook it up in dual display mode. But if I try to disable the laptop
screen it fails with a black screen /cursor. So I can't really use it in
single-screen mode on the docking station.

If I connect the laptop to my widescreen Samsung 22, it directly goes
to the parasited flashing screen effect.

So it looks like there are two separate bugs, one of them being specific
to large screens / Samsungs.

This is also very similar to what Anmar described at bug 732050.

[Bug 737891] Re: [Arrandale] gnome-display-properties unable to correctly enable monitors connected to VGA

2011-04-18 Thread Thierry Carrez
I managed to get it kinda working. The flashing issue with the Samsung
seemed to be in a stale monitors.xml file. Posting for reference:

Boot laptop separate, then remove ~/.config/monitors.xml and /etc/gnome-
settings-daemon/xrandr/monitors.xml

Shutdown. Place laptop on Ultrabase. Boot, system comes up in cloned
screens mode.

gnome-display-properties, disable cloned mode, set monitor screen
resolution, apply. We are now in dual head mode, with the unity launcher
on the laptop screen. The only way to get it on the main screen seems to
be to disable laptop screen.

disable laptop screen, apply. The confirmation countdown apparently runs
somewhere else and will revert your change in 30 seconds... unless you
press apply again and confirm it.

I still have to experiment on how I can make that setup stick... or work
with the laptop lid closed on the Ultrabase.

Note that colors seem to change (i.e. if you get pinged on a channel,
you get the pinged color), they just don't revert back to the normal
when you check out the channel. At the end of the day, it makes it very
difficult to see any notification.

Confirming that forcing old libgtk in LD_LIBRARY_PATH works around it.

[Bug 449702] Re: Default ntp server list doesn't have any servers enabled

2009-10-14 Thread Thierry Carrez
Confirming the refresh/initial-list issue:
- Install karmic from CD
- Bring up time admin
- Select keep in sync
- Confirm installation of NTP support
- Look at server list: none is checked
- Look at /etc/ntp.conf and see that server ntp.ubuntu.com is there
- Close the time admin window
- Open it again
- Scroll down server list, ntp.ubuntu.com is checked

The issue seem to be that the list is loaded once, ntp.ubuntu.com isn't
part of it, and enabling NTP support doesn't refresh it.

[Bug 404321] Re: gnome-screensaver should allow screen unlock even if account is locked out

2009-07-28 Thread Thierry Carrez
Well, it's not totally unusable since you can still switch to another
user. And there should be other users available if you're under a domain
setup. The whole account locking AD feature is buggy, since every
large AD domain user knows they can easily lock out someone else's
account.

I guess in the end it all depends on how being locked out translates,
since I can imagine a bug asking for the complete contrary of what
you're asking.

In that discussion, it might be worth considering that Microsoft does
not apply lockout policy to the screen unlock dialog:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188700

Maybe gnome-screensaver's unlock screen dialog could be taught to
recognize a specific locked error code, but I'm far from convinced we
should do that.

I'd say it's a bug in Nautilus, if any. Probably linked to bug 316653.

[Bug 278112] Re: Screensaver doesn't start

2008-10-22 Thread Thierry Carrez
For me it fixes the bug from the description : the screen starts to
fade, but then immediately returns to the desktop instead of starting
the screensaver.

(Note that I still have just a blank screen rather than a specific
screensaver if running on battery, but this is not what this bug is
about, and I tend to consider this a feature rather than a bug).

For those who still report failure with xorg-server 2:1.5.2-2ubuntu1
installed, maybe you're experiencing a slightly different bug, that
might warrant a separate bug report. In particular, I know Oliver could
workaround the issue by setting xset -dpms in a terminal window, which I
couldn't.

2008-10-16 Thread Thierry Carrez
This is linked to the keyboard choice...

To fix it (on both my workstations) I opened my keyboard preferences,
clicked + to select a new layout, selected the SAME layout I used to
have. Then it appears twice on the list. Select the newly-added one as
default and make it the system default. You can get rid of the old one.

I guess there must have been some broken layouts at some point in alphas
and upgrades retained them ?

Let me know if this fixes it for you too !

Those who can, please test the compiz packages from:

Windows disabled since the purpose of this workaround is to disable it for
gnome-screensaver only. Don't forget to log out/ log in after you upgraded the
compiz packages.

If you don't fear, please also test lock screen... checkbox in gnome-

[Bug 278112] Re: Screensaver doesn't start

2008-10-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
Proposed fix is to reenable an updated version of the
030_fix_screensaver patch that disables Unredirect Fullscreen Windows
for gnome-screensaver only.

I will push this into my PPA so that you can all test this and report if
it fixes it without any dirty side-effect :)

compiz (1:0.7.8-0ubuntu4) intrepid; urgency=low

  * Reenable an updated 030_fix_screensaver to prevent unredirect fullscreen
windows option from waking up gnome-screensaver (fixes LP: #278112)

Note that this just fixes the screensaver not starting problem, it
doesn't prevent the locking issue above when selecting lock screen...
in gnome-screensaver...

[Bug 278112] Re: Screensaver doesn't start

2008-10-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
This might be related or just another bug :
If I select the option Lock screen while screensaver is on in
gnome-screensaver, then the screensaver starts up correctly. However when I hit
some keys or move the mouse, the screensaver just restarts... I need to kill it
from SSH to recover my keyboard and screen.

[Bug 278089] Re: StartupNotify should be false in gnome-power-manager desktop file

2008-10-10 Thread Thierry Carrez
I agree it doesn't look very good when you log in.

Apparently StartupNotify=true has been there for some time (since
2.14.3-3), and is set explicitely so that a busy cursor is displayed...

What seems new in recent upgrades is that the Starting Power Manager
taskbar item remains active for quite some time, even on speedy
hardware... must be slower to start than it used to ? Or maybe it didn't
display a taskbar item before ?

Chris: if you agree that StartupNotify wasn't false in pre Intrepid
releases, could you update the bug title (I'd propose : Starting Power
Manager shouldn't show up on login) ? My feeling is that the problem
lies elsewhere, and setting StartupNotify=false just works around it.

[Bug 212098] Re: easy file sharing not notifying about logout/login

2008-09-01 Thread Thierry Carrez
It should work without re-login, as at windows and mac. If that OS can
do that, also ubuntu should.

It is more a question of security. On windows and mac, all users are
authorized to create shares, unless explicitely denied by their admin in
some group policy (on Windows). We can do that too, we just have to ship
the /var/lib/samba/usershares directiry with a users group owner, that
way all users are by default authorized to create shares. Then it would
be up to the admin to give another group to that directory (i.e.
sambashare) if he wants to tighten security more...

But that's not the usual Linux way, as we don't want to give up security
for useability. The best fix to get security and useability is to find
some way to automagically refresh group membership, that way we fix this
bug but also all others where you ahve to restart after being added to a
group.

[Bug 256256] Re: Unacknowledged reboot required before folder can be shared

2008-08-29 Thread Thierry Carrez
Reproduced on current hardy.

The problem is that the user gets added to the sambashare group, but the
group membership won't be refreshed until the user logs out and back in.
It's not really a samba problem, it's more a problem in the design of
that nautilus Sharing Options dialog box. It should make clear that
the user won't be able to share folders until he logs back in, or do
some magic to get the extended rights immediately.

[Bug 12153] Re: Cannot use Windows key in keyboard shortcuts

2007-06-24 Thread Thierry Daucourt
In reply to EduardoRomero, the following just work for me. It assigns left
windows keye to nautilus.
I admit that I never had success in doing this through GUI of
System/Preferences/Keyboard shortcuts that try to assign Super L key
unsuccessfully.

gconftool-2 -t str --set
/apps/metacity/global_keybindings/run_command_1 mod4e
gconftool-2 -t str --set /apps/metacity/keybinding_commands/command_1
nautilus

[Bug 73436] crash on Jabber when SSL tunnel

2006-11-27 Thread Thierry
Public bug reported:

Gaim version 2.0.0beta3.1 , running on Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft.

I'm using a webssl portal to connect to my company.
One of my instant messaging protocal is Jabber, and should be connecting inside
my web-ssl tunnel to my company Jabber's server.

Unfortunately, it does not work (it works perfectly on Windows)

So, I went to the account menu, and forced a register from there
= crash (repeated several times)
