[Bug 66226] 100% cpu usage when previewing videos

2006-10-15 Thread seguso
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 56786 ***

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Sometimes Nautilus starts using 100% cpu and goes on until I kill it.

This seems to happen in folders containing AVI files. It could be
related to video previewing.

Many users seem to confirm this:

[Bug 34247] Re: Trash always empty.

2006-10-14 Thread seguso

This might be an important hint.

I have been able to reproduce the bug as follows.

Install edgy. Choose american english in the installation. Use edgy
normally for a few days. Delete a file from a partition other than /, so
that a folder .Trash-username is created on that partition. Let's call
that partition P.

Then, install language support (system - administration). Install
italian language support. Log out and, in gdm, change the language to
italian before loggin in. When asked if this should be your default
language, choose yes.

Now that you are logged in with the italian language, go to the
partition which we called P, and delete a file with nautilus. Then, with
nautilus, enter the trashcan (menu - go - trash, which in italian is
Menu - Vai - Cestino). You will notice the trashcan looks empty,
instead of containing the deleted file. Now, with nautilus, show hidden
files and navigate to the .Trash-username folder. The deleted file does
appear there.

So the trashcan bug might be related to localization in some way.

Well, the issue of discoverability is not solved. It is up to you to
decide if it's important. The user will not understand why he can't hear
sound anymore.

Furthermore, the issue in mplayer is not solved at all.

Since it seems that the problem is not in the sound engine or in totem,
but in XMMS and mplayer, we could remove totem from the affects
section. We could also split the bug in two (one for XMMS and one for
mplayer). I don't know really.

[Bug 46005] Re: Crash when launching apps

2006-05-26 Thread seguso
I don't know why I can't reopen but, in launchpad, the table fields
status and severity are insensitive. Not clickable.

What action I do exactly? I just open any file with any program. It does
not matter what file and what program. Also it doesn't matter if I left-
click the file or I right-click and then choose an app from the menu.

But now the bug is gone again. I guess this is because ~/.recently-used
changes continuoulsy, and the bug only happens when it contains
something in particular.

[Bug 45518] Re: No easy way to listen to classical music

2006-05-19 Thread seguso
Sebastien, I use totem-gstreamer 0.10 (dapper).

Yes, Rythmbox has the same issue. You can try for yourself: create a
playlist with two consecutive tracks of an opera (as wav files). You
will hear the gap. I am no genius, but rythmbox is _obviously_ loading
the second file in memory after the first one is finished: you can even
hear the hard disk noise as the track changes. :-)

Note: totem currently (in dapper) has a serious issue which prevented me
from testing it again. Essentially, it stops playing wav files after 2
seconds. I can't hear anything at all after 2 seconds. Maybe I'll file
another bug about that.

[Bug 45518] Re: No easy way to listen to classical music

2006-05-19 Thread seguso
To clarify: this is a feature request to solve the problem of listening
to musical operas without gaps while being able to move between tracks
easily. I gave two possible solutions (one is to understand CUE files,
the other is preloading the next file), but there could be others.

[Bug 45592] Totem won't play sound files

2006-05-19 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:

In Dapper, Totem does not play audio files anymore: the sound stops after one

I have tried a wav file and an mp3 file. Both files can be played with xmms and
amarok.

This does not seem to depend on the file format. I can't play that kalimoto.ogg
file, i.e. I can hear output for one second then silence.
Totem's position slider continues to advance though.

Totem gives no output at all on stdout or stderr.

[Bug 45518] No easy way to listen to classical music

2006-05-18 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Hello. This is a wish for Totem.
Any listener of classical operas (e.g. La Traviata, Die Walkuere) will have
this problem and is stuck with MS Windows for this reason.

PROBLEM
---

Currently Totem (or any other linux program I know) does not allow to
listen to classical operas easily. Two cases are possible:

1. if I rip my CDs one file per track, I hear a brief silence
as the track changes and totem is loading the next track.
This breaks the continuity of the music.

( this is not related to the notorious mp3 bug.
The silence happens on any format, like flac, ape, wv,
mpc, ogg, wav, and is due to totem loading the file)

2. if I rip my cd with a single file per CD, I hear no gap but
there is no easy way to move among tracks.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION

One possible solution is to do what foobar2000 does on windows: understand cue
files. When I click a cue file, totem should read the track names and times
from it, and then load the corresponding audio file in the same folder. The
corresponding file is a big single file (~650 MB) with an extension that can be
ape, ogg, mp3, wv, flac, mpc, or wav. Totem would then allow me to move quickly
within the big file, by simply clicking a track name on the playlist. This
would be the ideal solution because virtually all classical music lovers have
their music in APE + CUE format.

Another possible solution is to make totem read ahead the next track, so
as not to produce silence between tracks. That is not ideal, because
classical music lovers should reconvert their music to be one file per
track.

[Bug 41871] Re: xmms' volume slider should not mess with PCM but with master

2006-05-16 Thread seguso
This bug was not about XMMS. (the current bug title was set by someone
else). It is about some apps breaking the volume of other apps. More
precisely: the problem is that XMMS _and_ mplayer are able to bring the
sound system in such a state that you cannot hear anything with totem
and kaffeine, regardlessly of how you set totem's slider, or how you set
the master volume via the panel applet. This means that, in order to
restore the sound to an audible state, you must either reopen
xmms/mplayer and move their slider, or open the volume control panel by
right clicking the panel applet. Neither solution is discoverable.

What about Raoul's suggestion? Kind of works, but that is IMHO a non-solution
because it is not discoverable and it only affects XMMS (not mplayer).
Also, it brings XMMS to behave differently than totem: totem's slider does not
control the master volume.

[Bug 44522] Window list bug

2006-05-13 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

On Dapper, install XMMS and the XMMS equalization plugin called equ.
http://equ.sourceforge.net/

Then, in the XMMS preferences dialog, activate the plugin and show it.
It is an equalizer.

Now press ALT-TAB: you will see that ALT-tab considers the plugin window
and xmms as two different window. However, the window-list only shows
one button. This is the first bug (though I am not sure whether it is an
ALT-TAB bug or a window-list bug).

There is a second bug: when you click the button in the window list,
sometimes this activates the plugin window, sometimes the xmms window.
There are times when the XMMS main window is invisible and there is no
way to make it visible with the window-list. You have to resort to
alt+tab.

Click System ► lock screen. Click switch user. A list asks you for the

Description:
I am not sure what package to file the bug to, however here it goes.

Dapper Drake. Play a song with xmms and decrease the volume in XMMS until the
song is barely audible (e.g. volume 7%). Close xmms. Open a movie with totem:
you find out that the volume slider in totem is already at max and cannot be
increased, but the volume is still too low. Then you try to increase the master
volume (the applet on gnome-panel) but you discover it is also at max. So you
get stuck: there is no apparent way to play the movie at decent volume. You
_could_ launch xmms again and increase the volume slider, but a newbie would
not discover that or accept it anyway.
In short, it seems the volume control in apps like XMMS and mplayer takes over
totem's slider, and causes it to malfunction.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'gstreamer';
however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

[Bug 41270] Re: Reveal in file manager useless

2006-04-25 Thread seguso
Sorry for the ambiguity. :-)

I am using Dapper. I am talking about the program beagle-search. If you
right-click in a file in that window, you have the option to open the file, or
to reveal it in nautilus. The latter opens nautilus in the correct fodler but
does not scroll down and highlight the file in that folder.

I believe this is a Nautilus issue because the Beagle authors themselves said
so in Beagle's mailing list. They said Nautilus is lacking a command line
option to open a folder and highlight a specific file in that folder.

[Bug 41285] Some audio files have wrong icons

2006-04-25 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:

 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Dapper:

Nautilus correctly represents mp3, wav, ogg, wma and flac files with a
musical note icon, but it does not recognize mpc (musepack), wv
(wavepack), and ape (monkey's audio). These types are shown with a
generic icon.

Consider that any classical music listener will have an archive that is
mainly composed of ape files ( plus some mpc he can't convert without
either loosing quality or increasing the size ).

[Bug 41285] Re: Some audio files have wrong icons

2006-04-25 Thread seguso
Bruce, I believe there is an open source program which can encode and decode
monkey's audio format in linux. I've compiled it myself and I am using it
daily. The program is called mac.

Secondly, what are you implying? That APE files should not be recognized by

[Bug 41285] Re: Some audio files have wrong icons

2006-04-25 Thread seguso
Daniel, the page is slow but there is no need to identify it. It is the generic
fallback icon: the piece of paper with a foot inside. It is not part of
tangerine (which I am using), but it is one of the old muddy style icons.
And this refers to mpc, ape and wv.

[Bug 41065] Window selector: sort items by recent usage

2006-04-24 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I wish that the window-selector panel applet would sort its items like
ALT-TAB does, i.e. by recent usage time. This would 1. make it easier to
toggle between two windows 2. allow to keep more windows open and
minimize the average time to switch window.

Sebastien, this is no duplicate. Here I am talking about the window SELECTOR,
not the window LIST.

For the window list, the request has been rejected with some objection. for the
window SELECTOR, the objection does not hold.

[Bug 40511] location bar cannot manage folders with long name

2006-04-21 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
The new location bar (breadcrumbs) stops working if I enter a folder
with a long name, like

Mozart Complete Vol. 19 - Missae - Requiem, CD 05 of 09, missa brevis in
F (KV 192) Herbert Kegel, Credo-messe Sir Colin Davis (KV 257) (flac +
cue).rar_FILES

In this case, no button appears in the bar. Such folders are very common
in my music archive.

A workaround would be to truncate a name that is too long, and add some
kind of ... symbol.

[Bug 36419] sort windows by recent usage

2006-03-24 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/36419

Affects: libwnck (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Hi,
there's a quick feature which would improve my desktop experience a lot. I'd
like an alternate mode where the taskbar would sort its buttons by recent usage
(like ALT-TAB does).
This means that, each time I activate a window, the corresponding taskbar
button would be shifted to the leftmost position.

Why? This way it would be much easier to frequently toggle between two
open windows. I'd start looking to the left and instantly find the
window I need. This is currently very difficult when many windows are
open. Reason why I need to use ALT-TAB very often, or keep few windows
open.

More in general, this would allow to keep many windows open and still
minimize the average time needed to find a window, because the most used
windows would tend to concentrate to the left.

I know this does not exploit spatial memory, and you are against adding
options, but I thought I'd try and ask anyway.

[Bug 35463] Folders have wrong default program and the association can't be changed

2006-03-18 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/35463

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When I was using Breezy, I had associated a few program to the folder
mimetype, so I could select them with a right-click on any folder:
cervisia, kdirstat, konqueror, plus a shell script (invoked by gnome-
terminal -x script.py ).

Then I upgraded to dapper months ago, and all worked well. Until a few
days ago, when something strange happened:

1. some associations have gone, namely the script and kdirstat.

2. Those associations can't be readded.

3. If I right click on a folder and choose properties-open-with, I see
that Cervisia is now the default action for folders. THere are only two
other choices: open folder, which should be the default, and
konqueror.

4. If I click on open folder, in order to set a good default, my click
is ignored. I can't change the default association in any way.

[Bug 34426] Scrollbars should be more visible

2006-03-11 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34426

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Hi,
Since you are creating a new ubuntu artwork for breezy (currently very orange),
I suggest to make the scroolbar a very visible shiny orange pod. It should
stick very clearly from the scrollbar background, and from all the other
widgets (like it happens in OSX and in Windows XP).

Why? Because it is very useful to be able to reach for the scrollbar
without looking. I believe in english you say with the back of an eye.
In Gnome, in maximized firefox and nautilus windows this is very
desirable, since the scrollbar is attached to the corner according to
fitt's law.

[Bug 34428] Titlebar buttons should be wider

2006-03-11 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34428

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Hi,

I noticed in the latest ubuntu-artwork, titlebar buttons (maximize,
close...) are a bit wider than tall. Like in Vista, though less
elongated.

I propose to make them much wider. This would enable the titlebar height
(and area) to be decreased, thus sparing screen space, while keeping the
same clickable area for the buttons.

I tested this and it works like a charm: edit
/usr/share/themes/Human/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml
and change aspect_ratio from 0.9 to 0.3 (in both places).

This works well for small titlebars, but not for thick titlebars. To
solve this, the button width could be made to depend on the titlebar
height. I.e. the button AREA should be a constant, and the width should
be computer with the formula

current_button_width =
constant_area / current_titlebar_height

The only way to delete them is to empty the trashcan as a whole.

(I know this is a very futile problem, still it is a bug :-))

[Bug 29932] Add virtual folder with recent documents

2006-02-18 Thread seguso
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29932

Comment:
Apologies for not having the time to make a spec, however I am going to
elaborate here.

Sebastien, the places menu does not help with the following scenarios:

1. I want to open a recently used file with a nondefault program.

2. I want to delete, in one shot, a bunch of recently used files (very
useful after burning a bunch of movies on a dvd).

3. I want to rename a recently used file;

4. I want to continuously drag the same bunch of files onto some target
(say you have a program which is generating those files, and you need to
periodically open them in an editor, or trash them).

, and so on. Currently, the only solution to do the above is to (1)
navigate to the correct folder, and then (2) locate the file within the
folder (which is expensive if the folder contains 1000 files).

All this is irritating because I recall having used the file just a
minute ago, so I have a feeling the second access should be easier. But
it isn't: I have to travel the whole route again and locate the file
again (among the 100 items).

Now, it is clear the places menu does not solve the problem. But a
virtual folder would. Why? Because, when you need a file and you recall
having used it a minute ago, you would simply click the recent files
button in nautilus' toolbar, and find the file you need ON TOP of the
list. Or almost on top. Since the list would be sorted by time of recent
usage, descending. So, no need for navigating to the correct folder, and
no need to locate the file within the folder.

[Bug 31134] Pressed taskbar buttons flashing

2006-02-11 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31134

Affects: libwnck (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Even after the recent fixes in libwnck-2.13.90, the taskbar still starts
flashing without reason.

To reproduce:

1. Open an xmms window and make the playlist visible.

2. Drag the xmms window a few pixels aside.

3. The xmms button starts flashing.

This is not an xmms bug but a libwnck bug, because a pressed taskbar
button should _never_ flash: if the button is pressed, the program has
already got my attention, so the flashing is useless. It is also
puzzling because it is not clear how to stop a pressed taskbar button
from flashing. libwnck should have ignored the flash request simply
because the associated button was pressed.

Proposed solution: all is needed is to do a simple check before starting
a flash: if the taskbar button is pressed, do not start the flashing.
Instead, libwnck seems to be using a much more complex logic where
pressed buttons are allowed to flash (why?).

[Bug 30512] Main menu appears truncated though there is lots of room for the whole menu

2006-02-04 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30512

Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Swap the position of the two panels, so that the menu bar (Application-
Places-System) on the bottom panel.

Click to open the menu (e.g. click Places).

If the menu icons were not loaded in memory, Gnome places the menu too
close to the bottom of the screen, so only a fraction of it is visible,
and I have to scroll to see all the items. This looks very wrong since
there is plently of space in the screen: the menu ought to have appeared
at a higher position.

I believe the reason for the problem is the following. If the icons are not
loaded, Gnome computes the menu height ignoring the icons, i.e. considering
only the text height. And it chooses a menu position that is correct with THAT
height. Then, when the icons are loaded, the menu height increases, but Gnome
does not update the menu position, so the menu ends up too low and gets
truncated.
I am using dapper, but this happens on breezy too.

The app froze as usual: the UI does not repaint and the app goes into a

[Bug 29932] Add virtual folder with recent documents

2006-01-28 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29932

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
hi,

I propose to add a virtual folder (like Trash and CDburn) containing the
recent files.

Reason: the recent file list has a great potential, but currently is
too difficult to reach (places recent documents), and its items are
not first-class citizens. If you added a virtual folder, I could act on
recent documents as if I were in their real folder. I could move them,
delete them, ecc. That would be a great usability improvement.

To make the pathbar more intuitive, you could add a small triangle pointing

I saw this in Vista screenshots and it looks more understandable.

You could also remove the frame around the buttons, since the pathbar is

[Bug 29560] drag drop improvement: delay bringing window to front until mouse released

2006-01-24 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29560

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Open a nautilus window and xmms. maximize natilus. Bring xmms on top
(activate it). Nautilus is now on the background, yet some files are
visible within it, because xmms does not cover it completely.

Now, a natural action is to drag a file to xmms playlist. This is not
possible because, as soon as you click the file in the nautilus window,
nautilus goes on top and (being maximized) hides xmms. So, the only way
to drag is to hover the tasklist and reactivate xmms.

IMHO, a much better way exists (the one employed by MS. Windows): the
nautilus window should go on top only when the mouse is _released_ (not
when it is pressed). So a direct drag would be possible, without
resorting to the tasklist.

[Bug 29425] rectangular buttons in titlebar

2006-01-23 Thread seguso
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29425

Affects: metacity (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Currently, I find the titlebar buttons (maximize, close...) way too
small, compared to how often I click them. This is at 1024x768.

As a workaround, I increase the size of the title bar font, which as a
side-effect increases the size of the buttons. But this wastes a lot of
screen space.

What I am asking is to have rectangular buttons in the titlebar, so
their area can be bigger without wasting much screen space.

[Bug 28757] taskbar blinking never stops

2006-01-23 Thread seguso
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28757

Comment:
What issue are we trying to fix here. The need to switch to an
another task to stop the glowing while you are doing
 something?

The reason I filed this bug is that many times there is no way to stop
the blinking, e.g. when doing an update via update-manager. What seems
to happen is that both a window and its MODAL child window start
blinking, and there is no way to stop the blinking of the parent.

While might be a bug in the apps, this happens for many apps (e.g. xmms)
and therefore I though a workaround was needed at the libwnck level.
