Tim, please update to gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu6 when it's available in a few hours. After it's installed, restart your computer and see if you still experience this issue. I don't use a wayland session. Also on the first login screen the xorg session has been selected in the menu. I understand vmwgfx is the VMware Linux graphics driver also used by Virtualbox for exposing 3D/OpenGL/3D hardware acceleration to guest virtual machines. Switching off 3D acceleration did not help. Remains the fact that the problem only shows up in Ubuntu 22.04 and not in Ubuntu 22.04; Ubuntu Mate 22.04 nor in any 20.04 version or in Fedora 36 Beta also with Gnome 42. Curious, do you have any cooperation with the VBox maintainers? Otherwise the log shows that the Wayland session starts successfully and tries to register itself with GDM. My first login was with xorg and it failed, the second login was without the menu to select wayland or xorg, So what is different between running xorg the first time and the second time? Some time ago I had to choose xorg, because DOSBOX and Conky did not run with Wayland in that VM. That was confirmed by many other reports on the internet. Yes if the first login fails then gdm3 assumes that means it was Wayland that failed so on the second try it will remove the Wayland option and you will get Xorg only. So it might be possible to say that every Wayland login attempt is failing(?) To be clear in my opinion it is not a problem of Virtualbox, since I run over 15 modern Linux distros in Virtualbox VMs and none has the same issue. That is true for Fedora 35 and 36 Beta also with Gnome 42. VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.26.iso gives the same issue. It's the VirtualBox Guest Additions that triggers this bug. With the latest VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.32.iso and before. When I uninstalled Virtual box with "sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run uninstall" the problem disappeared. The boot and login were normal. But the problem reappeared after a reinstall "sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run". 3. I have upgraded the system from Ubuntu 20.04. After a while I noticed that DOSBOX and Conky did not run anymore with wayland, so I moved back to xorg through the menu in the login screen. According to "the Internet", it is a known issue with Conky and DOSDOX. When installed within VirtualBox with Guest Additions the first login prompt is sized 800x600 the second login prompt has dynamic screen resolution so is full screen. With "auto-login" for the user enabled the first 800x600 login prompt is skipped. So my guess is that the Guest Additions code is run after you get through the first login prompt.
