This report can be closed, as it's obviously a bug in Unity and not
Gimp.

I tried Gimp while Choosing Gnome and Cinnamon at login and everything
worked great as it should.

and not a gimp bug at all...

I think its triggering a bug in unitu-panel-service where the actual
memory leak is.

Is there a way to profile and determine where the leak is coming from?

I just ran valgrind via:

sudo killall unity-panel-service  valgrind --leak-check=yes 
--log-file=./valgrind.log /usr/lib/unity/unity-panel-service

I'm attaching the valgrind log for just a few seconds of running gimp.
