[Bug 1786579] Re: If I change inputs or turn off my TV, my windows will change positions

2018-08-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That said, if you maximize a window then there is a reasonable argument
that the status of "maximized" should stay true no matter the resolution
of the output, and especially since they are so similar in resolution.
It's a matter of opinion as to whether a maximized window should retain
its maximized status when it's also forced to resize to fit the new
resolution.

So...

1. Please report the bug to the Gnome people and see what they say. If
they agree to keep it open then we will too:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues

2. As a workaround, try:
   (a) Keeping the window smaller; or
   (b) Keeping the window full screen (F11); or
   (c) Simulate the Nvidia case by logging into "Ubuntu" instead of "Ubuntu on
Wayland".

[Bug 1786579] Re: If I change inputs or turn off my TV, my windows will change positions

2018-08-13 Thread dan...@benoy.name
If you think so. But I will say this sort of thing does not happen under
Windows with the same TV/receiver, and on the same machine/TV/receiver
when I was running an Nvidia card with the Nvidia proprietary drivers,
it didn't do it either.

Something strange must be happening here, and I opened the bug report
because I lack the expertise to figure out what the deal is.

I would suggest against assuming that this is desired behavior without
trying to replicate it. But it's up to you.

[Bug 1786579] Re: If I change inputs or turn off my TV, my windows will change positions

2018-08-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think this is correct and not a bug.

Windows will always move/resize when the monitor they were on changes.
So you would need to find a hardware setup where the computer never
detects the "monitor" is changing. It does sound like the receiver is
advertising a different resolution to your TV, so effectively the
computer sees that as a change in monitor every time you switch.

As a workaround you might find keeping the window smaller, or at least
not maximized, will work. But I don't think this is a bug. The computer
seems to be doing the right thing for when the connected display
attributes change.
