There is good information on installing codecs here:

DVDs will need the totem-xine and libdvdcss2 packages. These are
available from the medibuntu repository
http://www.medibuntu.org/

That was great thank you so much. it works fine now. but now I cant seem
to get the flash player working in firefox can you give me any help with
that. im really dumb about stuff like this.

I cant seem to get the video codecs
It wont play anything I used a new dvd as well as an older one . and even a
avi file file from the net . I looked up the codecs for the player because the
movie player said I needed them but when I tried to put them in the command
line it said there was no codecs package . I really like
