[Bug 684649] Re: Nautilus desktop icons should never be under the launcher
Hey guys, an addendum... I have used both mac and pc with linux... the statement about global menu applies to mac as well... on a wide screen and especially on dual monitors...it is a very bad design at its basic concept... Productivity is severely compromised with global menu / mac menus...on larger real estate set ups like dual monitors, so many, as I mentioned on the previous post, are not going to be using Unity at all...which brings me back to ...why not two releases?? Unity 1 and Natty.. It relieves the pressure to solve a bug on unity that was caused by changing something in gnome and visa versa. Unity is strictly netbook...not for desktops .. The combination of both on one release only suggests more problem solving than would normally be necessary or desired. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/684649 Title: Nautilus desktop icons should never be under the launcher -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 684649] Re: Nautilus desktop icons should never be under the launcher
I will change to only add the extra margin when unity is running, but if you switch between sessions, you can get icons on the desktop that moves from the extreme right to the left because of the icon desktop area is different between them. The current margin is a little bit too much (I just added the offset of the unity panel), I will just set it to a lower value as well.

Now nautilus listen dynamically if unity is running or not to decide to add the extra margin. [Bug 684649] Re: Nautilus desktop icons should never be under the launcher
Would it not be better to add an additional gconf-key to enable the additional margin in Unity instead of hard-coding it into the binary? Or maybe a new startup option which only Unity calls (Like --unity-mode)? Or maybe Nautilus should look for a variable like UNITY_EXTRA_MARGIN or something else? At the moment the extra margin is very annoying when using the classic mode.

[Bug 684649] Re: Nautilus desktop icons should never be under the launcher
hey guys... As i recall.. sometime back... when the auto-hide was enabled in ccsm. unity plugin...the launcher panel would be hidden until moused over and the icons would shift position when it came out of auto-hide I may be remembering that wishfully. Most definitely a visual bug.. and I am guessing it will be commented on by many, because most of us are not going to be using Unity at all.. especially with dual monitor set up,,, the Global menu on a dual monitor system delays work time significantly, so Unity is useless in that senario. As an artist...this looks as though my nephew came into my computer room and purposely moved my desktop icons over to irritate me, then locked them into position. the extra margin which look like a bug on the classic edition though since there is no launcher or anything over this space, what issue do we try to solve exactly? icons don't go under the launcher space by default or when auto aligning the icons, they will only do for users who decide to go in manual layout and put something there, it doesn't seem worth adding hacks over hacks just to prevent those users to use the space under the launcher? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/684649 Title: Nautilus desktop icons should never be under the launcher -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Sebastien Bacher [2011-01-05 16:27 -]: the extra margin which look like a bug on the classic edition though since there is no launcher or anything over this space, what issue do we try to solve exactly? icons don't go under the launcher space by default or when auto aligning the icons, they will only do for users who decide to go in manual layout and put something there That seems to be very easy to get into, though? I noticed this myself when switching to unity, the left column of desktop icons got hidden. They were originally layed out automatically, then I moved some of them around a little. Now I manually moved them all a step to the right, but of course that requires getting rid of the launcher first; I used gconf-editor to enable autohiding, but now it appears again on an empty desktop.
[Bug 684649] Re: Nautilus desktop icons should never be under the launcher
ok, seems indeed that the default left margin is not enough to be out of the launcher space, maybe we should just set the value so they don't get under the launcher without blocking manual placement, that should be enough for most cases and much easier than trying to block users screen space from manual placements done by users -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/684649 Title: Nautilus desktop icons should never be under the launcher -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
