[Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600
IF I am looking at the correct gconf.xml file, then it says that the owner is ROOT and that I do NOT have rights to change permissions. I assure you that I have not changed any rights/permissions to that or any other files that were installed by this Ubuntu O/S. Please don't tell me that the action of unchecking those boxes in the screensaver section of the program REQUIRES administrative rights to change those settings BUT yet it gives ZERO user prompt telling that you can not change/uncheck those boxes without having administrative/SUDO rights ? [Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600
That is the source of the problem. Something is wrong with your profile that removed your user's ability to modify your gconf files. A variety of things could have occurred to get your system in this state, including disk corruption. You can try restoring your permissions with the following command, and then rebooting: sudo chown -R youruser:youruser /home/youruser/.gconf* (replace youruser with your actual username). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/714015 Title: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600
They are NOT checked. That's what I have been trying to say all along. Unchecking those boxes for some reason is NOT being properly written to what ever configuration file that controls the screensaver/going blank function. OR for some reason the changes that are being made to that file are possibly being lost because the altered file is perhaps being replaced by the original version of the file perhaps upon rebooting the system. All someone needs to do is go into the code which serves to write the unchecking of these boxes to the configuration file and figure out for what reason the uncheck would not be written saved to the configuration file and then come up with the proper fix. If I were a Linux program and had access to the code, I believe even little ol' me could do that. [Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600
The problem doesn't lie with the code, which is why we cannot reproduce this issue. Could you please try adding another user to your system and seeing if the screensaver works for that second user? Could you check to make sure your ~/.gconf directory and subdirectories have appropriate permissions? If you start gconf-editor, are you able to modify those settings? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/714015 Title: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Please give me the exact name of the file(s) that you want me to check and the entire path to their locations. Also, give me the command to be issued to start gconf-editor and exactly what settings I would be looking for ? Don't want to setup second user on my system, because I have NO use for a second user, the only user of this system is me. [Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600
I suspect there is something wrong in your user's profile. Temporarily creating a second user to test a clean profile, and deleting this after is the best way to confirm that. The command to start gconf-editor is gconf-editor. On the window on the left, click on Apps, and gnome-screensaver. Remove the checks from idle activation enabled and lock enabled. Close gconf-editor, reopen it again and see if the settings have been saved. The file I want you to look at is ~/.gconf/apps/gnome- screensaver/%gconf.xml. Make sure you have permissions to modify it.

# What desktop environment does this problem occur in? (GNOME, XFCE, KDE, etc.) GNOME. # Do you use visual effects? (System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual Effects) Visual effects is set on NONE. # Does the problem still occur if you disable visual effects? YES. # Does the problem still occur if you use the blank screen screensaver? I am not using any screensaver. Screensaver button is unchecked. There in lays the problem, unchecking the box does NOT keep the screensaver from becoming active after a period of inactivity. # Is the Lock screen when screensaver is active setting checked in System/Preferences/Screensaver? NO. # Is this a laptop or a desktop machine? Desktop. # How many monitors do you use? One, LCD 19inch Samsung. # If it is a laptop, do you use an external screen? Not laptop. # Do you have the hamster-applet application installed? This applications has been known to cause screen locking issues. No, not unless it was installed during Ubuntu O/S installation. When I attempt to run the command that was referred to about gathering some type of info, the answer that I get is COMMAND NOT FOUND. [Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work
Since I already have fixed this by running the command XSET S NOBLANK at the terminal what would be accomplished by reinstalling from synaptic gnome-screensaver, whatever that is ? If I uncheck those 2 boxes at the screensaver screen, this should be sufficient to keep the BLANK screen saver from kicking in. Since unchecking these 2 boxes does NOT accomplished the desired results, that tells me that there is some type of BUG in this section of this O/S which needs to be fixed, so that merely unchecking these 2 boxes would keep the BLANK screen saver from being deployed when there is no activity. I have installed several of the latter version of Ubuntu numerous times and the result is always the same, unchecking these 2 boxes does NOT do what unchecking them is intended to do. I think that when I go way back to Jaunty, this problem does NOT occur. So that tells me that this is a bug that has been written into the later versions of Ubuntu which needs to be fixed. Since I am not a Linux or any other type of programmer, I have ZERO knowledge as to what the problems (or how to fix it) is except to say that a guess would be that it is somehow related to the particular type of hardware that is being used on the installed system since you say that it works fine for you. It's not like I do not know how to uncheck these boxes nor should I really have to do anything but that to get this to work !!! I would be more than happy to provide the exact hardware components that I am using if anyone is interested in trying to duplicate this issue to verify and then come up with a PROPER fix for this. Anyone interested in specs or in trying to fix this can contact me at joverstre...@verizon.net. And also, I would not say that because Fabio is not able to duplicate this, necessarily means that this problem is not being experienced by any other users. This type of thing really puts me off to recommending this O/S to other persons. Please don't tell me that it isn't really that important in the grand scheme of things, because if you told someone that you were trying to convince to use Ubuntu that sorry unchecking these buttons will really not work properly, they would promptly tell you to go soak your head and probably rightly so !!!
