Finally got it! Here's the xsession-errors for the day. Things appear to get interesting towards the end: The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'. (Details: serial 176234 error_code 8 request_code 2 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) To add, the bug listed there is also said to occur shortly after logging in. Hello again, I haven't experienced the problem very recently but the next time I do, I'll make sure to get the relevant bits. As it stands, my .xsession-errors is over 30MB in size, apparently mainly due to some programs I've run in Wine.
