[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 ->12.04)

2016-01-23 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

it is quite sure that you do not suffer from this old bug.
Please file a new bug. Tell what you did with which program,
which drive, which kind of media. Tell what error messages
you get when you try to read the discs.

Please notify me by mail to scdbac...@gmx.net about the
new bug report number you got.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-12-05 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

  SRU Justification
  ~

  Impact:

Currently Brasero will fail to write files to a disc in on-the-fly
mode using the libburnia plugin resulting in 'coastered' media.
This is the default mode of operation and unless the user is writing
a pre-built ISO image, this fails 100% of the time and has since Oneiric
    -- possibly Natty.

  Fix:

Complete/fix part of the following commit:

http://git.gnome.org/browse/brasero/commit/?id=1b8397ee252df2d554682ca2d694d5937fbf6e39

Particularly the change to plugins/libburnia/burn-libisofs.c around line
200 that hoisted the priv-libburn_src-read_xt() call out of the if()
statement
- should have actually removed it instead of duplicating it.
+   should have actually removed it instead of duplicating it.

  Patch:

http://git.gnome.org/browse/brasero/commit/?id=253031b69c5dcbcf079c445ec530afb7ccd9ea82

  Test Case:

    * Insert blank CD or DVD in drive:

  (1) Attempt to write files to the writable optical disc by dragging
files from Nautilus to a blank disc.

  (2) Click on the 'Write Files to Disc' button in nautilus.

  (3) Make sure 'on the fly' mode is enabled by selecting 'Burn image
directly without saving to disc' (which should be the default).

  (4) Click on the 'burn' button.

    * If the bug is fixed, you should have a properly written and readable
disc. Otherwise, the procedure will fail and the disc will be unusable.

  Binary package hint: brasero

When I burn a DVD (4,7 and 8,5 GB) Brasero show the progressbar till
about 30-40% (exact point is randomly) and than says, that it is
finalizing the media. This finalizing messages is showing for the rest
of the burning process (~10min @8x 8,5GB). After that, it ejects the
media without any error. But when I insert the media again, nothing
happens, except, that the DVD-Drive disappears from the computer:///
  location in nautilus.

This problem only exists when burning On-The-Fly. Burning ISO Images or
automatic creation of ISO Images before burning works without problems.
The burning speed doesn't matter to this problem. I test 8x, 4x and 2x.
All the same problem. On-The-Fly burning using K3B works quite well @8x
  speed.

One thing I also notice is, that Brasero uses 100% CPU on one core,
while K3B uses just about 5-15%.

I attached the last Brasero log. I don't know, why it just says, that it
was only at 49% and then says it's finished. The burning took about 28
minutes. The media was unusable on all my three devices (Linux/Windows).

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-12-05 Thread UlfZibis
Hi,
today I see this new automatic update on my Ubuntu 12.04 x64 and was curiour
reading the bug report because of a similar problem.
I'm not sure, if my problem, some few days ago , has to do with the same cause.
It was the first time I ever used my Ubuntu to burn a DVD, so all settings
should have been default.
Description:
As source I used the downloaded ISO of PartedMagic from 2012_11_30.
I simply opened this with Brasero to start burning on a DVD-RW, which first had
to be erased.
After some time I saw 100% complete and something like finalizing the media
and I continuously recognized mechanical movements from the readers head.
As after 5..10 min. nothing changed, I clicked Abort.
Then shortly I saw something with successful, but I was unsure, if it was
caused by my click or if it had happened anyway.

After, the disk was unreadable, even from Windows 7.
But I anyway tried to boot from it to start PartedMagic, but it didn't work.

Please think about, if this covers the same bug or if it is a different
problem.

The downloaded ISO should have been OK, as I could burn successfully
with Windows 7 right after.

This would help to avoid unexpected data loss.

Now I tried again with just updated 3.4.1-0ubuntu1.1:
Burning took ~ 10 min. at 4x -- successful
And yes, after, a checksum test was executed automatically.
(So sorry about the noise, because I didn't find a hook to enable it. Anyway it
would be nice to have a choice for full compare)
I could boot PartedMagic successfully.
Thanks for your detailed explanations!

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-11-20 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Florian, or anyone else affected,

Accepted brasero into precise-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/3.4.1-0ubuntu1.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please change the bug tag from
verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not, change the
tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing
will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

2012-11-20 Thread Nico Zanferrari
Hello, I confirm that the patch works fine on Precise. So,

+1 for going to release on Precise

Technical details: a 32 bit Precise fresh live usb was confirmed to have
the bug with the default Brasero 3.4.1-0ubuntu1 and a DVD RW. After
enabling the proposed repository and the update to 3.4.1-0ubuntu1.1, the
problem is solved (even without a reboot, on the same DVD, after
blanking it with the dvd+rw-format commands).

Many thanks to all,

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-10-27 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

some technical comments to Nico Zanferrari's notes:

(I always use a fresh standard live 32 bit USB key with the same DVD-RW)
 [...]
 - the unreadable coasters produced from other Ubuntu versions are seen as
blank disk from standard brasero 12.10, and can be easily blanked with it.
This is different from old versions of brasero that does not recognise it at
 all as a DVD medium.

If the DVD-RW was recorded with write type DAO and suffered the
found bug, then it might afterwards bear an unclosed session,
because the pre-announced amount of data was not sent to the
drive.
libburn qualifies such a medium as unsuitable but also offers
the opportunity to make it pretend being closed, so that it can
be blanked. (Current Brasero git does not bear the necessary
call burn_disc_pretend_full(), though.)

So it is not sure that this problem is caused by the bug of
october 2010.
Backporting the fix would be helpful to clarify this.

 - the bug (don't ask me why) is quite different on 12.10. Here sometimes you
can have a readable DVD, but never on the first recording! It seems that
it's somehow and sometimes able to record a second recording session on what
it thinks it's a blank disk.

Theoretically two half sessions of the same size could fill
the pre-announced size of the DAO session. But it is hardly possible
that the result bears proper directories or file content.
The first block of each pair of 2 KB blocks was not written.
Any directory, that occupies more than one block, would become
damaged. Any data file that has more than one block would not
match its original on disk.

Again, backporting the fix and testing the effect would bring
more insight.

If it turns out that there was another bug which is gone in the
current git version of Brasero, then it would be worthwhile to
identify the changeset which solved that problem.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

2012-10-26 Thread Nico Zanferrari
I do confirm that this proposed patch resolves this nasty bug on
quantal. So, from my point of view, this is a big THANK YOU to all the
upstream developers and the smart Ubuntu guys!!!

Some notes (I always use a fresh standard live 32 bit USB key with the
same DVD-RW):

- the patch is still not proposed on 11.10 and 12.04 (see
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/), so I cannot rightly test it
there
- the unreadable coasters produced from other Ubuntu versions are seen as
blank disk from standard brasero 12.10, and can be easily blanked with it. This
is different from old versions of brasero that does not recognise it at all as
a DVD medium.

can have a readable DVD, but never on the first recording! It seems that it's

+1 for going to stable on quantal!

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-10-24 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Florian, or anyone else affected,

Accepted brasero into quantal-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/3.4.1-0ubuntu3 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please change the bug tag from
verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not, change the
tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing
will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-10-15 Thread Ayan George
** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification
+ ~
+
+ Impact:
+
+ Currently Brasero will fail to write files to a disc in on-the-fly
+ mode using the libburnia plugin resulting in 'coastered' media.
+ This is the default mode of operation and unless the user is writing
+ a pre-built ISO image, this fails 100% of the time and has since Oneiric
+ -- possibly Natty.
+
+ Fix:
+
+ Revert part of the following commit:
+
+
http://git.gnome.org/browse/brasero/commit/?id=1b8397ee252df2d554682ca2d694d5937fbf6e39
+
+ Particularly the chage to plugins/libburnia/burn-libisofs.c around line
+ 200 that adds an additional priv-libburn_src-read_xt() call.
+
+ Patch:
+
+
http://git.gnome.org/browse/brasero/commit/?id=253031b69c5dcbcf079c445ec530afb7ccd9ea82
+
+ Test Case:
+
+ * Insert blank CD or DVD in drive:
+
+ (1) Attempt to write files to the writable optical disc by dragging
+ files from Nautilus to a blank disc.
+
+ (2) Click on the 'Write Files to Disc' button in nautilus.
+
+ (3) Make sure 'on the fly' mode is enabled by selecting 'Burn image
+ directly without saving to disc' (which should be the default).
+
+ (4) Click on the 'burn' button.
+
+ * If the bug is fixed, you should have a properly written and readable
+ disc. Otherwise, the procedure will fail and the disc will be unusable.

+

The burning took about 28
minutes. The media was unusable on all my three devices (Linux/Windows).

report might be wise and people still experiencing problems with Brasero
should submit new reports as this report here is way to confusing with
all the comments.

2012-10-11 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

for completeness: One of the two Debian patches replaces
the theory of SAO-versus-TAO.
It turned out that the function, which transmits the
libisofs image data to the burn software, dropped every
second data block. (Actually the first block of each pair
of blocks.)
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=226272
The bug was obviously introduced two years ago by
changes which are announced at:
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=630651#c12

This explains many of the follow-ups here.
But not the original report where libisofs and growisofs
ended after only half of the work was done.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

Well, actually we [George and me] do not have any good idea left what
goes wrong with the cooperation of libisofs and libburn underneath
Brasero. Experiments with other applications indicate that the
libraries themselves seem ok.

Nevertheless we have three groups of bugs:
- DVD burning aborts after about 50 percent (rare, Ubuntu bug 780117)
- CD burning produces unreadable media (frequent, Ubuntu 780117, Debian 617409)
(My theory of write type SAO versus TAO did not hold.)
- A DVD got burned with a messed-up ISO 9660 image (rare, Debian 688229)

Have a nice day :)

Unfortunately without any log files, the developers have a hard time
fixing the error. Do you have log files from failed and successful

2012-09-24 Thread Paul Menzel
Perriman, thank you for following up on my question.

I think the only way is to save the log, when Brasero asks you to after
a burn process. You can also look into `/tmp/` for the log.

Are you sure, you are seeing the exact same error as the reporter of
this bug does? That means progress bar stops after 40 %?

If not could you please take a look at Debian bug #688229 and see if the
corrupt DVD medium (coaster(?)) – if you still have it lying around –
exhibits the same symptoms as reported in #688229? That would be
awesome.

I think the most useful steps to try is the following.

$ sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr1 /mnt/
mount: block device /dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so
$ dmesg | tail # see what the error is

If that fails with the same error, please paste the following.

$ dd if=/dev/sr1 bs=2048 skip=16 count=1 | od -c

Hi,

That seems to be the much more often occuring problem, although it is
not the original cause of this bug report thread.

but I was burning ISOs, not data CDs),

Does that mean you burned an ISO image file from hard disk onto CD ?
(Not composing the CD content from various files on hard disk.)

I still wonder how Brasero could talk libburn into the reported
behavior. Other libburn applications like xfburn, cdrskin, or xorriso
seem to have no such problems.

Could you try for confirmation with any ISO 9660 image file:

  cdrskin -tao padsize=300k -v dev=/dev/sr0 blank=as_needed -eject
image.iso

(With /dev/sr0 being the drive address and image.iso being
 the ISO 9660 image file.)

If this shows the same outcome as Brasero, try again with option -sao:

  cdrskin -sao -v dev=/dev/sr0 blank=as_needed -eject image.iso

(Option padsize=300k is not necessary then)

For composing a ISO 9660 CD from disk files, you could try

  xorriso -outdev /dev/sr0 -blank as_needed -add /usr/local/bin --
-commit_eject

(Again /dev/sr0 stands for the drive, /usr/local/bin stands
for a suitably sized directory which should go onto CD.)

Have a nice day :)

2012-08-17 Thread Austin Dempewolff
Does that mean you burned an ISO image file from hard disk onto CD ?
(Not composing the CD content from various files on hard disk.)

Yes, that's correct.

Could you try for confirmation with any ISO 9660 image file:

  cdrskin -tao padsize=300k -v dev=/dev/sr0 blank=as_needed -eject image.iso

Done, worked great. Stdout attached.

 Austin Dempewolff wrote:

I assume you tested full readability afterwards.

That cdrskin command is supposed to do quite the same with libburn
as Brasero does. One difference is the end padding of 300 KB,
which Brasero omits. No padding with TAO might cause read-errors
at the very end of the medium. This is known as Linux read-ahead-bug
but it does not match your problem descrption.

Did you eject and re-load the CDs which were burned with Brasero,
before you tried to read them ?
The Linux block device driver does not necessarily know that
the SG_IO driver wrote new data to the CD. So it can be that
only parts of the new data get visible and old cached data
stay visible, until you eject. Re-loading the medium then
forces the block device driver to re-assess the medium content.

Have a nice day :)

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-08-14 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

i am the upstream programmer of libisofs and libburn but not
directly involved in Brasero.

Andrea Amoroso wrote in #63:
still the mp3 cds I burnt are full of the mp3 i chose, with some
of them unreadable and others readable but with many lags

It is not clear to me whether libisofs was involved with the Brasero
run. Did that PPA disable libisofs ? Does burning MP3 create audio
CDs for old CD players ? (In that case libisofs would hardly be involved.)

Whatever, most likely this report is not about the 50 percent problem,
which started bug/780117.
It seems rather to be the other bug class, where Brasero finishes
without complaint and the medium is unreadable. See also
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=617409

This seems to happen mostly with CDs, not with DVD. As with the
Debian bug report, i would rather expect a problem between drive
and medium and possibly the write type SAO (in contrast to TAO).

If only there was not the statement in bug/780117 that images which
were stored on hard disk can later be burned to CD successfully.
(Is this really true in the case of comment #63 ?)

The 50 percent bug seems to be much rarer than the problem with
unreadable CDs after an appearingly successful burn run.
It might be that only this one can be avoided by intermediately
storing the image on hard disk.

Andrea Amoroso wrote in #63:
I tried also with Xfburn, no problem with the burning process,
but after that I can't even mount the cd, because the device seems empty..
k3b gives an error starting the burning process..

It would be interesting to see the error log of such a failed
K3B run.

K3B prefers to use mkisofs resp. genisoimage and cdrecord resp. wodim,
whereas xfburn uses libisofs and libburn.

Have a nice day :)

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-08-13 Thread Paul Menzel
Dear Andrea, thank you for testing the patch.

Could you please provide more information. Especially the version of
Brasero, maybe find out if libburn is really disabled and what is used
now. Additionally the versions of the components Brasero depends on and
the any log files from Brasero.

It is sad, that upstream at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=655601 does give more
information. Also it makes it more difficult that this bug is discussed
in at least three different places. But the libburnia developers prefer
to use mailing lists and additionally it looks like there are some
problems how Brasero uses libburnia.

So to fix this once and for all, it would be great if you could join the
discussion at #617409 in the Debian BTS. You can easily import the
messages by directly downloading the mbox file [2] or by installing the
package devscripts

$ sudo aptitude install devscripts

and executing `bts show --mbox 617409` and import that message to your
mail program. That reply to the appropriate message with your findings.
For example if I remember correctly Thomas asked to use the command line
tool `xorriso` to test if libburn4 is working correctly on with your
burner [3]. If that is verified the bug in Brasero using libburn4 should
be found and fixed. But the developers definitely need more information
for that.

I am sorry, that there does not seem to be an easier way to solve this
issue.

A similar bug report is on Debian [1], but it is not known yet if all
talk about the same cause the original reporter was seeing.

Anyway the libburnia developers stepped up and cooked up some patches
for you to try please to gather some more information what goes wrong.

So please apply Georges patch [3] and post the result to the discussion
(on the Debian bug tracker, since they are doing the work currently)
doing the following to keep threading.

$ sudo aptitude install devscripts
$ bts show --mbox 617409 # downloads the messages from the archive \
# quit possible opened mail client like mutt by pressing key q

Now import that file from `$HOME/.devscripts_cache/bts/` into your mail
program. Choose George’s message and hit reply to all and write your
results (quote properly and delete unimportant stuff in George’s
message) and attach the log files.

Thanks,

Paul

With on the fly disabled there is no copying cd option anymore, at least which
works.
Perhaps you could make another patch so that copying cd is routed via the slow

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-05-30 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
Btw, there are several new libburn and libisofs versions released since
1.1.8/1.1.6, which are currently in Ubuntu 12.04, maybe new libburn/libisofs
packages would fix this important bug?
Unfortunately Ubuntu Quantal still has old libisofs, see bug #1006582 (Please
sync libisofs 1.2.2 from Debian unstable or testing - current version doesn't
work correctly with libburn 1.2.2)

libburn and libisofs priorities to -1. Is this good, before I make

finally submitted a patch upstream that disables libburnia and libisofs based

the bug is still is there in Precise, as usual very little change of it
being fixed upstream (Gnome)

hopefully ayan's ppa would fix this

+1 for Ayan's ppa...after installing his brasero, a data dvd is burnt
correctly, only problem was that brasero wasn't able to eject the media,
but everything else went well...please push it to the updates, there are
still many people out there using a dvd burner, especially newbies...

As much as I respect the time and effort put in Ubuntu by everyone, how

You might not like that answer, but at least my reality is that it's
been years ago since I used or burned a CD/DVD, and none of my
computers even have a drive any more. I think this applies to most
developers these days.

So this is an area which indeed gets tested very seldomly; this needs
to be improved.

2012-05-05 Thread Ayan George
Just to clarify, this has been a priority for a while and I've had this bug for
over 2.5 months -- this should have been fixed by now.

On-the-fly burning seems to be still broken but this behavior does not
appear to be the default under Precise. Can someone verify this for me?

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-05-05 Thread Jos
Wow, quick feedback, much appreciated.

I installed Brasero from Ayan's PPA on my Precise. I disabled the image
checksum plugin and created a data DVD. Direct burn was disabled so I
checked it (this is what we are trying to fix right?).

Burn was successful as per Brasero (and no log created) but alas the
DVD is not recognized when I put it in (and it was my last blank so no
more testing for now...). I validated that my DVD bruner was reading
other DVDs ok.

Anything else I can do (aside telling my buddy to get a flash drive,
which would be a good idea anyway ;) )?

@Martin: Yes, I understand burning DVDs is not something widely used.
Heck I even chose to not have a DVD reader in my latest laptop. But if
a feature is availalbe (installed by default) users will expect it to
work. In the current situation it would be better to hide the
functionnality altogether (at least direct burn). I know this is not
easy and it may be simpler to just put the fix in ;)

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 -12.04)

2012-05-05 Thread Nico Zanferrari
Hi Ayan, thank you for the support and dedication - I really appreciate
it. I've made a couple of tests, on a fresh 12.04 standard 64 bit
installation.

- a default data burnt DVD is still unreadable. As already pointed out, it is
not even anymore possible to change (nor see) the on-the-fly option
- after applying your PPA, there is no problem at all

So, from my point of view, go on urgently with the patch!

Note: for testing, use a DVD-RW. And resurrect it with:

sudo dvd+rw-format -force /dev/cdrw
sudo dvd+rw-format -lead-out /dev/cdrw

Thank you again,
Nico

What it the current state of Brasero in 12.04?
In the Burning dialog there are no options (???), has been the on-the-fly
burning disabled in 12.04 or not?

2012-05-04 Thread Jos
As much as I respect the time and effort put in Ubuntu by everyone, how
come 12.04 could get out the door with such a bug?

Tried today to burn a data DVD-R (on 12.04) and got the same result as
Davide above (twice as I tried again). To make things worse it was in
front of a friend I was trying to impress with Ubuntu. Let's say I
floped, hard. And I am not even talking about the very long time it took
as the image check is on by default and takes ages.

Can we get a quick fix without resorting to external PPAs? In the
current situation both Brasero and Nautilus-integrated burning is
completely broken, and for all Precise users from what I read.

(session.log availalbe if required but this problem seems to be well
known)

I haven't found the root cause yet and I think the best approach would
be to simply disable the libburn related plugins by default. I hope to

I have burned a CD-RW with your brasero directly, without image, and it
works.

Thanks.

For those affected, please try this PPA:

I'm not sure if we'll be able to get this in since were in feature
freeze right now but I'd be interesting to know if it works and if this
 causes any regressions.

Burning ISO Images
or automatic creation of ISO Images before burning works without
problems. The burning speed doesn't matter to this problem. I test 8x,
4x and 2x. All the same problem. On-The-Fly burning using K3B works
  quite well @8x speed.

One thing I also notice is, that Brasero uses 100% CPU on one core,
while K3B uses just about 5-15%.

I attached the last Brasero log. I don't know, why it just says, that
it was only at 49% and then says it's finished. The burning took about
28 minutes. The media was unusable on all my three devices
  (Linux/Windows).
