I use compiz normally, but the problem is also there when _not_ using compiz or
any fancy stuff.
As said it is a IBM Thinkpad T42, so the specs are:
64MB RADEON 9600,
Intel Mobile Pentium M 735(1.7GHz)

Yes the script have execution permission. It was working in feisty before the
upgrade to gutsy.
It's just two commands to upgrade the system

message: attempt to log in failed. Also network interfaces will not
load so network configuration cannot be changed.
