Your proposal is pretty much what most users on the GTK bugtracker seem
to agree would be the best solution.
There are already some patches like that on the gtk bugtracker. Maybe
the gnome/ubuntu guys can take a look at it, clean them up if needed
and integrate it. Maybe, hopefully,

No, the movie is a commercial DVD that I own and I'm trying to rip.
Oddly, it only seems to be this movie. If I use gst-launch0.10 with
another movie (say, Snatch) it works just fine.
I am able to rip The Patriot using VLC, but not gst-launch0.10. So this
