It grows with time.
When used with valgrind, the memory usage grew with time, but I wasn't sue
if that was due to the Xchat or valgrind, so i didn't bother to write down
the reported memory usage.

This is a file that the tags show up correctly in all three programs.
It is totally possible that the tags got messed up, but it seems odd
that one entire album of files would have only the artist and album
corrupted and the rest of the files are fine.

to the library they show up fine.
I put them on my Ipod as a test, and the corrupt tags were still corrupt and
the working tags worked just fine.
I think my vote is that I somehow messed up the tags at some point, since

I have an issue that gnome-system-monitor casues the CPU to 100% for a
few seconds aprox once every 65 seconds lasting about 18 seconds. It
only happens when gnome-system-monitor is open on any tab in forground
or minimised to 'task bar'
