https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/1095305 might be a duplicate. I'm wonder what the value for max.recents under org.gnome.gedit.preferences.ui in dconf is. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one Upstream development happens in git master and 3.14 so upstream isn't too interested about reports from older, unsupported versions like 3.10.
