[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2009-09-02 Thread JasonV
Just going to chime in on this -- I'm a new Linux user, and this was
first wall I hit in setting up my system. My situation is a bit
different than everyone above, in that I also use my machine remotely
via telnet. As soon as I had to reboot the machine, I wasn't able to
re-connect to it. When I get back home, it's sitting there asking me
for my password for the wireless network. There was no 'obvious' way
for me to change this, and took me quite awhile to finally stumble on
this page to figure out the work-around.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2009-08-22 Thread audunmb
I think this is a huge issue, especially for people coming from Windows
or Mac to Ubuntu, and wants to use Ubuntu on their laptop. It's a hassle
to have type in a password at every start-up.

I think the best way to handle this would be to have a small checkbox in
the password prompt box that says something like Don't ask for this
password next time and add something about how this might be less
secure, and learn more-link to a help page. Checking the box makes
available to all users enabled, as Tor Klingberg suggests. (Or some
other solution that let's new users easily bypass the password prompt
right after installing Ubuntu).

In some settings keeping this secure is the right choice, but for most
users using autologin they choose convience over security.

Keyring pasword is not asked only with wifi encripted conextion. Using
Ubuntu One happens the same. It's happens when auto-login is activated
and the system needs a password activated in the keyring. Writting the

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2009-06-29 Thread Juergen Pabel
I believe that this bug is falsely filed against libpam-keyring: it
should be filed (only) against gdm. The solution should be to add a
trigger for the auto-login checkbox, which tests whether the keyring is
used at all. If so, it informs the user about the security consequences
and changes the keyring password to NULL.

Changing the keyring password to NULL allows for automatic keyring
access after the user is auto logged-in to GDM (ie: no password entry
required when connecting to a secure WLAN).

jp

PS: I really like this setup in combination with full-disk-encryption
(via the alternate installer), read my blog entry about this:

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2009-06-29 Thread Tony Espy
I think the check is whether an *encrypted* keyring is being used. If
the keyring already has a NULL password, and is in the clear, then
nothing needs to be displayed.

An alternative to actually changing the key directly would be an
explanation of what needs to be changed, additional words about the
security implications, and then either instructions on how to change, or
a link / button that launches seahorse. Note, the instructions are
probably required at minimum, as changing the login keyring password
isn't all that intuitive in seahorse. I also had to launch seahorse
from the command line because I couldn't find a way to launch it from
the UI ( using 9.04 ). So without a button/link that launches it from
the dialog, perhaps gdm does have to do all the work.

Finally, I'd like to comment that I agree with jp re: disk encryption.
Encrypted home dir was made available in Jaunty ( albeit with some minor
work on the installer's part ) and will available as an option by
default ( at least that's what I've heard ) in Karmic. This seems to
me like the better approach for keeping important things on disk safe as
opposed to the login keyring approach.

2009-06-13 Thread Bluefox
I complete these steps some time ago and still works on new installs of 9.04.
these are from memory but i hope they can help you.

if you have this problem I set up a wireless network. Set my account to
auto-login. Whenever I start machine, I get a dialog that nm-applet
wants access to keyring, enter password. then this may help.

1. On the first login to your desktop set up your wireless connection
2. you will be prompted to enter your keyring.
3. restart your computer
4. login again, you will be prompted automaticly for your keyring password. do
not enter it!
5. Right-click on the Network Manager and choose edit connections
6. Goto your wireless tab and choose the Auto wireless connection there and
edit it.
7. you will again be prompted to enter your keyring password to read the
wep/wpa/etc key you had entered.
8. in the dialog box be sure to choose allways allow
9. the next time you restart you will not be prompted for your keyring pass.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2009-06-03 Thread Nick_Hill
On a fresh install of 9.04,

I set up a wireless network. Set my account to auto-login. Whenever I
start machine, I get a dialog that nm-applet wants access to keyring,
enter password.

I want the machine to start up, take me to the desktop, and connect to
the network without troubling me for passwords.

There were no obvious ways to make the machine behave as I wanted. I had
to go to Launchpad, search for bugs, read several bug reports until I
found a method of working around the default behaviour by following the
steps Doug Holton followed, above.

The default behaviour is certainly buggy to me.

I expect to set up a wireless network connection and have it auto-
connect without asking for a password, whether or not I have auto-login
enabled. And if it doesn't auto-connect, it should be simple and
intuitive for the user to make it auto-connect.

Thanks Collin, that worked for me (in Jaunty Ubuntu Netbook Remix).

I have an administrator user (me) and a non-administrator user (my kid).
I went to administration-Login window and set my kid's account to auto-login.

Then I right clicked the wireless applet, went to 'edit connections',
the wireless tab, and checked the available to all users for our
wireless connection. Rebooted and it logged in his account and wireless
was already connected. No password prompts.

Thanks!

I've only been using linux for a week (openSuse 11.1) now so I don't know how
much the distros differ between each other... But I found this workaround in
the forums from Xafke:
Goto the control panel, click Network Connections, open the tab Wireless,
Select you're wireless network and click edit.
Then enable the Connect Automaticly option (under connection name)
Also enable Available to all users. It's next to the cancel button.
Now apply the changes and reboot.. Hope it works!
I'm using OpenSuSe 11.1, Gnome.

I don't know what it does with the WPA key, but it worked for me:
autologin and open wlan without the keyring prompt. Just my two cents...

Sebastien: fr me on 8.10, it also does not work. I set it up by
applicationsaccessoriespasswords and encryption keys, there I go
editpreferencespassword keyrings* - I have got two keyrings there,
login and default, when I try to set them to blank (i.e I type in the
old password and leave the new one blank), a dialog to confirm it is
unsafe appears, I confirm it and then CPU usage goes to 100% and I have
to kill seahorse - password is not changed. I thought it was special to
my system, so I did not report it, a mistake as it seems as cenora is
also affected.

I don't think I understand; doesn't NM already have such an interface?
The only change would be to save the keys in a file instead of placing

I don't see why file-based keys would need anything more than what is
provided by the current nmapplet, in the [right-click]-“Edit

The problem is that it still doesn't work.
We (the users) don't know exactly what package is the culprit. You can change
the package if you know another one contains the error.
But the bug is *not* fixed, please change the status to that.

Test:
Connect to a wireless network, reboot - at autologin it reconnects
automatically.
Then change your (login) password - you have to *manually* change the keyring
password to the same one, otherwise NM won't connect automatically to the
wireless network.

protected by nothing but file folder permissions (it allows users to

I don't see why WPA network keys are that much more secret than private

since they're almost always shared between several people.

the dirtry hack is not that it would be insecure.

the dirty part is that users have to dive into the mutt of .pref
directories in their home directory to find the right place to edit
their keys - or the app has to provide a complete key management
frontend ... which usually is too heavy weight all but a few apps.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2009-01-03 Thread Martin Pool
Bryan,

I'd say that wireless passwords are a security issue, but Ubuntu has
tended to treat them as far more serious than they actually are.
Laptops commonly have confidential business or personal information, and
hopefully have a login password, a bios password, or a disk encryption
password to protect it. If those protections are adequate for the data,
they're certainly adequate from protection against someone using your
bandwidth, for which they need to be in a particular physical location,
and so asking for a separate password just to get onto wireless is
excessive.

However, at least for me, this is now working ok in Intrepid, so it's
moot.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-12-28 Thread Bryan Hoyt
I experience this problem in Intrepid. To reproduce:

1. assume you've got a fully installed Ubuntu Intrepid
2. set up your wireless internet to connect to your encrypted access point
3. make sure your login keyring (or default keyring) has a password, and set it
to unlock automatically on login
4. set your user up to autologin
5. REBOOT your machine
6. just after you're autologged in, you'll be asked for a password to unlock
the default keyring

AFAICT, the reason it happens is: Gnome's keyring auto-unlocker uses
your login password to unlock the default keyring (if the passwords
match). So when you login with a password, everything works fine.
However, when you autologin, you don't type your password, so the auto-
unlocker isn't able to use it to unlock the keyring.

It's not immediately obvious how to solve this securely. But I don't think we
should ignore this or treat it as a feature, because
 a) anyone who sets up to autologin obviously doesn't want to type in a
password, so it defeats the purpose of autologin,
 b) it encourages people to set up their default keyring with an empty
password, which is insecure. (This is what I've done!)

Tchalvak, I disagree that wireless passwords are a security non-issue. I
think they are an issue -- if people get access to my wireless access
point, then they can steal all my bandwidth. They may even be able to
sniff my traffic, I'm not sure. However, you're right: the convenience
of automatically connecting to a network outweighs the security issues
for most people.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-12-18 Thread Tchalvak
This is all because the ability to unsecure and secure individual items
living in keyrings is not granular enough/not available. Wireless
passwords are a security non-issue, mine is: kurogane. Wireless
passwords (and quite likely other such keyring-ed passwords) need to be
easily passed to an unsecured category so that constant, daily
connections to a wireless network do not require inputting a password
each and every single time.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-12-01 Thread Rich Wales
Not for me, it doesn't. I upgraded a new Hardy system to Intrepid
today, and it's started demanding Enter login password to unlock
keyring after doing an autologin. It wasn't doing that in 8.04.1
before I did the upgrade.

This new system was going to be for my mother, who is not very computer-
savvy at all. I was hoping to convert her computer from Windows XP to
Ubuntu, but a crucial part of that plan was that the new system was
going to use autologin and timed login so she wouldn't ever need to
enter a password. (It's her home system, and she lives alone, so the
security risk of autologin is acceptable -- and I'll do all the software
updates and such which would require an admin password or sudo.) This
seemed to be working just fine when I initially installed 8.04.1, but
upgrading to 8.10 broke it.

This is a SHOWSTOPPER. Unless I can get rid of this prompt to unlock
the keyring, my mom simply WILL NOT ACCEPT this awkward new system and
will insist on keeping her Windows system. (Or else I guess I'll have
to wipe the new disk, reinstall Hardy, and set up everything all over
again from scratch WITHOUT upgrading to Intrepid.)

And the pam-keyring-tool workaround didn't work for me either. I was
still being prompted for the login password.

However, it looks like I was finally able to get rid of the unlock
keyring prompt by using pam-keyring-tool -c and entering an empty
password (just hit ENTER) for the new password. So I guess maybe I have
a workaround after all. Average users, however, would probably have a
terrible time with this, so I would say there is still a serious bug.

Agreed. I also have the problem that suddenly I have to enter my Password when
I want to ssh to a known host - ssh seems to lookup the password/Key in the
keyring - ant that is locked!
This problem is NOT solved.

And somehow it does it for other programs (nm-applet e.g.).

I've been informed by the friendly people in the #ubuntu+1 channel on IRC
that Network Manager in Intrepid does not currently save the wireless
network keys. You have to enter them every time you start Ubuntu. I was
told it was a very common known issue which was expected to be fixed in time
for the Intrepid beta release.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: libpam-keyring

 This is on up-to-date Gutsy:

 libpam-keyring doesn't work correctly when set-up together with gdm's
 autologin feature.

As expected, GDM logins automatically the correct user. However
libpam-keyring fails to retrieve the user's password (probably because it
wasn't entered) and instead displays a dialog box asking for it, which
defeats the purpose of the plugin. Instead, if the password isn't available
it should just do nothing (perhaps log a message somewhere) and allow the
normal keyring unlocking to work (eg, let Network Manager ask for the
password when it needs it). This locks the loading process, which is very
 annoying.

Also, the dialog where libpam-keyring asks for the password does NOT mask
the entered password (eg, with asterisks), making it visible on the screen.
That's why I'm marking this as a (minor) security vulnerability.

Note: of course this can be worked-around by simply disabling the plugin in
/etc/pam.d/gdm-autologin (and it doesn't put itself there), but it's still
 buggy behavior.

It's likely that libpam cannot actually retrieve the password on autologins
(I assume GDM just su -s into the username, so it doesn't actually know
the password), in which case this should be attached as a wishlist bug for
GDM or gnome-keyring. For instance, gnome-keyring might allow itself to be
unlocked by the root user as an optional, lower-security feature.

 Here's my config:

 $ cat /etc/pam.d/gdm-autologin

I marked this bug confirmed, because I've experienced this problem. It
is apparently intended functionality, according to the Gnome developers,
but I'd still really like to be able to connect to my secured wifi at
home without authentication using my laptop. I do believe Windows lets
you save a WPA password, and also login automatically. Of course it's
less secure, but I want to be able to choose more usability over
security, if I want to. In my case, I don't want my wife to have to
bother with passwords. If someone steals my laptop, and can connect to
my home network without authentication, that's my problem to fix.

The Gnome developers will say this is intended functionality because
the Gnome keyring is (supposedly) used for other things, and they don't
want it to be subverted by autologin. I would argue that if the Gnome
keyring is so sacred then WPA passwords and WEP keys shouldn't be kept
in the Gnome keyring: an alternate method should be used.

Of course, nobody uses the Gnome keyring for anything else because it is
too damned annoying, and, well, cryptic. In any case, it turns out that
if somebody gets physical access to my machine they can get hold of the
wireless keys no matter what. So BFD. Give it up.

IMHO, network-manager-gnome is already a bad enough wireless client (compare it
to Intel's PROSet/Wireless, where you can see hidden SSID networks, manage

We urgently need to make it easy for users to login to their wireless

Nothing forces you to use something better than NetworkManager if you
want to.

There aren't many Ubuntu developers, and they aren't here just to fix
the bugs you want fixed.

Fair enough, it's not a bug, it's a misfeature as the guy above said.

Can we not have a private/public key scheme here? Somehow, I can't think
of the specifics. Something that allows root to unlock the password, but
in a secure way.

Even if a solution requires you to enter your password ones when you
setup your auto-login, I think most will agree that this is fine, as
long as you are not asked for a password every time you boot/login.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-01-27 Thread Ioannis
Why is this bug flagged as won't fix ? As far as I understand the
solution with the pam-keyring-tool is considered a 'hack'.

A user should be able to set auto-login and have their default keyring
work as before. I have the same problem, where I'm asked to unlock the
default keyring (once), when using auto-login. I even modified the
/etc/pam.d/gdm-autologin to include the missing line from
/etc/pam.d/gdm, to no avail.

And please don't get all technical. I don't know if this is a libpam-
keyring or gdm or whatever bug. Whatever it is, It's an annoying bug
which needs attention.

kind regards.

Chad, Marcus - alternatively to what Leszek writes, you can start gnome-
keyring-manager, delete the keyring and create a new one. FOr automatic
unlocking ,the keyring must be the same as login password.

Sebastien: I do think that having the keyring password in plain text is
a security issue but I will gladly interchange it in order to not having
to input any passwords (I do not value my WPA password that much). So I
think this should be somehow fixed because it lures people to have
password in plain text.

Troels: thanks.

2007-12-20 Thread Marcus Dapp
I'd like to add some additional info that may be helpful to identify the
problem. I have a clean gutsy install on a laptop with WPA wireless. Everything
works fine. Now I changed the login password to another one using the system
administration/user and groups dialogue. From that moment on after reboot/new
start the gnome-keyring asks (on behalf on nm-applet, I suppose) for a password
to connect -- but it only accepts the OLD(!) previous login password; neither
the new one nor the wireless password. I hope someone can make sense out of
this.

2007-12-04 Thread Orkun Sensebat
I have the same problem. Autologin is one of the most important features
for notebooks. it is way wiser to secure your data with a bios password,
anyone who knows how to use a usb stick or or ubuntu disk can damage you
this way.

I can easily login without any password. I can connect using
NetworkManager to unencrypted networks. When I select an encrypted
network, like my home network it asks for userpassword to access my
keyring.

Reinstalling has been tried and the only change i made was compiling the
module myself and ensuring it is been loaded on system startup by
default.

I had exactly the same bug on my newly installed Gutsy machine. Just

keyring to establish wireless connection. I spend few hours digging
solution and nothing helped. Finally I've found this page and WOW.
pam-keyring-tool provided by Troels Faber works also for me so thanks
for it!

IMHO it's very serious bug since it's impossible to setup Ubuntu 7.10 to
automatically login and connect to a wifi network upon reboot. This
should be fixed very quickly - just take a look at many web pages with
discussions how to enable this feature, which was working in Feisty but
is broken in Gutsy.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2007-12-04 Thread Leszek
So until it's fixed you can use pam-keyring-tool provided above by
Troels Faber. Just put it in some folder (let's say /usr/local/bin),
create small script (I created /usr/local/bin/un_lock ) with 2 simple
lines:

#!/bin/sh
echo YOUR_PASSWORD | /usr/local/bin/pam-keyring-tool -u -s

Then do sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/un_lock /usr/local/bin/pam-
keyring-tool

Finally under System--Preferences--Sessions create new session with
command /usr/local/bin/un_lock .

This way it works perfectly for me.

BTW if you use suspend/hibernate and want you connection to be restored
after it, create 2 scripts described in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/NetworkManager in Suspend
support section.

I hope this bug will be fixed ASAP because IMHO it's highest priority
for standard home notebook users.

It's obvious for me that it's only workaround and only for home users
for which simplicity is key feature. So you have temporary solution and
choice to do it or not.

I personally have done it on my wife's notebook since it's simple
environment used by her only a home, without any sensitive data. For her
to have comfort that everything works as expected and no strange
messages appear is most important thing about computer usage.

So one again - yes, it's dirty workaround BUT you have choice to do it
or not.

I have a workaround, I've used for some time now.
libpam_keyring used to to include an executable called pam-keyring-tool, which
can be used to open the keyring. Starting with Gutsy, pam-keyring-tool is no
longer included.
I downloaded the source and compiled the executable. It is used like this:
echo PASSWORD | /path/to/pam-keyring-tool -u -s

I put it in a shell script which I run during login.

Autologin and an open gnome-keyring automatically!

I have attached the exec here for the lazy...

2007-10-31 Thread pug
So in other words, due to this bug and/or feature it is impossible to
setup Ubuntu 7.10 to automatically login and connect to a wifi network
upon reboot.

Sorry, but this really needs to be fixed ASAP. I can't believe I'm the
only one having a machine on a wifi network that I sometimes reboot
remotely.

Please upgrade the importance of this bug :-)
