In brightness lock settings, I set the `Turn off off when inactive
for` settings to 1 minute, but the screen remains on (an unlocked) for
ever. The bug is introduced in Ubuntu 14.04 and was not present in
13.04/13.10.
I tried `xscreensaver` and it works fine.

I was one of the affected (I thought back then). I am now running 14.04
on my X1 carbon, and the sound does not have any problems. I don't
recall when the problem was fixed, but it is fixed for me.
