I downloaded and manually installed the NVIDIA drivers version 340.32
from the NVIDIA website. The brightness is still not working. I'm
running Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 on an HP Elitebook 8650w, NVIDIA Quadro 1000M
and I've tried all workaround suggested above.

I have the same problem with Dell Inspiron 3847, but I've solved using
an older keyboard, not Dell.
I suspect the problem is in Dell keyboard and/or mouse.

The problem is only seen if I suspend by closing the lid. If I suspend using
pm-suspend or selecting suspend from the top panel cog then the problem is not
seen. Also I notice that in the case of closing the lid I get numerous errors
in syslog during the suspend, starting

Which version of Ubuntu and of system-config-printer are you using? I
have checked and both the versions of system-config-printer currently
used by Utopic (14.10) and Vivid (15.04) depend on gir1.2-gtk-3.0.
Is it possible that when you installed gir1.2-gtk-3.0 that an older
version of gir1.2-gtk-3

I also am reporting that my Chromium sessions do not accept ALPHANUMERIC
keyboard entries which is to say, the "Win" key and the PF
(function) keys work, but not the alphas, numerics, or punctuations.
I have reported this in Google's forum also as

I can confirm that I only have the same problem when using "Nvidia
binary driver - version 331.38 from 331 updates". After switching to
tested (instead of with updates), it works fine.
