apport. After an abort trap in an application in development (a Scheme
kernel with reference counting) apport silently brings the machine down
trying to "analyze" my software in development (you can be glad

errors. I reformatted & found the Ubuntu "Backups" application works
again for recording a backup.
Perhaps "Backups" needs to check disk integrity before proceeding and
report errors in a tidy way and offer recovery? I expect

suitable, you might want to lock your screen manually rather than
waiting for the screen saver?

Hmm.. That did not regenerate the locale, since it claims to have been
generated recently. Can you try to run:
sudo locale-gen --purge
which will remove and regenerate all the enabled locales on your system.
If that doesn't help either, can you try to reboot?
