the alternates handling was supposed to be less brittle than diversions (what debian does for fglrx/nvidia). Now that fglrx is no more there's still nvidia, and it creates libGL.so symlinks as well. libglvnd will hopefully make these obsolete at some point in the future, but we're not there yet
