I dug into the code to try and fix this, but it's a lot more complex
than it looks. If anyone wants to start digging, look at `gedit-
tab.c:248` - that's the first catch conditional. Also look at the
function getting called if that conditional passes - there's a similar
catch conditional in there.

Second Dominik's post as not fixed. The hidden files are showing in
Nautilus on 16.04 by default and when changed back do not stay like
that.
My thanks to him, his suggested fix via Firefox Save dialog worked for
me - I have tried many of the older suggestions - including resetting
nautilus
