I've been having this issue since updating to mantic - the sound to HDMI
just freezes and any application that is writing to it also freezes. If
I do (from a terminal):
systemctl restart --user wireplumber.service
It comes back for a while.

It's probably bug #1630063. The system seems to lock up because the
keyboard and/or mouse are plugged into the same USB hub as the printer.
If you can plug them differently, only the printer will lock up. Running
"lsusb" in a terminal will show which hub the devices are connected to.

I see this intermittently (about every other boot) since updating Ubuntu
GNOME to Xenial, but only on the Autokey notification icon. I work-
around by re-booting as often as necessary.

I am having the same issue. I first tried with Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 and
then with Ubuntu 16.04. Both have the same issue. Doing "sudo pm-
hibernate" can duplicate the issue. I am attaching a report from lshw.
My computer is a HP Pavilion dv7.

Marco's note was the key for me. In my case some conflict between
Compiz and Mate caused my desktop to go completely crazy. One of the
effects was to make every application go full screen. After cleaning up
the mess, all the apps went back to more-or-less normal but Thunderbird.

I just had this problem occur again, I am using 12.04 (still). I also
got it tp work correctly, here is what worked for me (YMMV). I am not
