I have the same issue here. It only happens when using the NVidia
display driver.
I get this in Kern.log when it happens:
Jun 7 00:17:48 laptop kernel: [ 480.797985] echo 0
/proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs disables this message.

The easiest workaround seems to be to click on “Switch account” and then
log in as the same user as before.

I don't have time to setup a dev environment and compile and test
nautilus, but I did browse the source code a bit to narrow down the
problem.
So I looked in the file nautilus-list-view.c [1] and found there are
different ways to end a renaming action. Turns out, this bug only
happens in one

What I did:
- Install 13.04
- create user with UID 10203040 (works as expected on login screen and User
settings panel)
- update to 13.10
Expected
- User available on login screen
- User shown in system-settings
Actual
- User _not_
Not sure it is Compiz, the same problem also happens with Xubuntu, which
does not use Compiz if I remember correctly.
Anyway it is severely affecting the usability of the application.
