Sorry I haven't updated this bug in a little while. I did try the
"position_fix=1" and "=4" suggestions, to no avail. I am pretty busy and
haven't had a chance to mess around with the computer much as of late,
but there are a few things I'm going to try, and if I find a viable
solution to the issue
I tested the outputs of hda-jack-sense-test with a device plugged into
the three different side ports, and the following are the outputs, which
show a new pin being present for each port:

I was working on this issue with shannon-vanwagner, so his answers are
accurate. We tried many different "fixes" and nothing seemed to work. As

open-vm-tools installed.
When the guest display is resized (which seems to occur just after the desktop
is loaded) the top and bottom panels do not scale with it and the WindowPicker

gvfsd-http stays connected (ESTABLISHED) for long periods of time after
I've used VLC to play streaming Youtube videos. This is the case even
after I've closed VLC. Plus when lsof finally stops reporting the
connection as "established" it will start reporting it as CLOSE_WAIT.

Sometimes the drum sounds on login actually get played but after that the
computer stays mute.
If nothing else this tells me the speakers are working fine, so no hardware

started happening to me more often in the past few months, but perhaps
that's due to some server-side change.)

Had the exact same issue as comment #11 including log spamming and can
confirm that deleting the empty file 'global-messages-db.sqlite-journal'
in my Thunderbird account folder resolved the issue.
This was under Ubuntu 12.04 with Thunderbird 14 and encrypted home
directory.
