I got it fixed after upgrading from 18.04 to 19.04, but it was not upgrading that solved it. The issue is still there in 19.04. The solution for me was disabling secure boot, purging the nvidia drivers and then reïnstalling them. Apparently when secure boot is on, the nvidia-drivers do get instal

Still happens here on a HP Pavilion. I have tried the intel onboard video, the nvidia, with the nvidia drivers. If it's of hep the xrandr output shows: HDMI-1 disconnected, so it is seen but not activated. When booting in Windows all works fine... Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080,
