Ok so following the advice on gconf and dconf it seems like system wide
settings work for chrome, and that is about it. Firefox, spotify etc.
all need to be updated in their respective settings.
Also this problem means I am unable to run VPN as it depends on system
wide setting of proxy works.
I can confirm that this is still a problem in the released Oneric. I did
get the exact same errors when using a dual monitor setup. Installing
the updated with jockey also failed.
The only solution I have found is the one Tony posted to uninstall fglrx
and reinstall some other packages. Thanks,

Yes, this is still an issue for me. Yes it is reproducible - I just have
to log out and log back in and it crashes shortly after the Unity
launcher is displayed. I assume there's something in some setting
somewhere that the program doesn't like, but I don't know where I should

I ran into this one with some SVG images generated by graphviz from dot
