1) Install Ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04 (development branch), and as normal, create a
administrator user during the installation.
2) Open Gnome Control Center (also called System Settings), and open User
Accounts module.

'User Accounts' module can break the system administrator account
I'm going to reassign this to gnome-session - the display manager
doesn't know if a session requires any hard disk space to run (it might
not). So the session should really check for this if required and show
a dialog before quitting.

Some Realtek cards have been known to not properly detect carrier in the
past.
Please paste the output of the 'sudo ethtool eth0' command (when you see
that the cable isn't recognized as connected). You'll need to first
install the 'ethtool' package for this, though.
