on my system the following command was required to update gvfs without
removing dependent programs:
sudo apt-get install gvfs/utopic-proposed gvfs-daemons/utopic-proposed
gvfs-libs/utopic-proposed gvfs-common/utopic-proposed gvfs:i386/utopic-
proposed gvfs-libs:i386/utopic-proposed
Let'S try again. Please would somebody set importance of this to
wishlist? Nobody is going to implement it anyway, but so what.

ok. got the bloody thing to start via:
/usr/bin/thunderbird -safe-mode
and deleting add-ons; still get:
(process:28133): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion
'sys_page_size == 0' failed
But I don't really care anymore.
Anyway, hope this helps someone...
