I built a version of stellarium from source following the instructions
on the wiki and I still see the same behaviour (X hang after leaving
fullscreen mode and going to windowed). I removed ~/.stellarium before
running and I'll attach the log from this run.

In Xubuntu 14.04.04 on an [HP Pavilion dv3-1075us] laptop, I am seeing
this symptom. That is, when I suspend for a long period of time (E.g.
overnight), the mouse is functional but the cursor has disappeared.
Resuming after suspending only a short period of time (E.g. 10 seconds)
does not yield

Did you try these patches?
The attachment "remove-ui-deprecations.patch" seems to be a patch. If
it isn't, please remove the "patch" flag from the attachment, remove the
"patch" tag, and if you are a member of the ~ubuntu-reviewers,
unsubscribe the team.
