hang. Only way to kill the process is to switch to another terminal

Almost there. I think the colour of the overlays needs to be
significantly different to that of the grey background or else it's
visually confusing. Perhaps black, like it is at present in Gnome 3.

I have been having the same problem and no apport report is produced

This scroll issue happens in both the preview pane and when you open the
email. The latter seems to be more reliable, but if it is a very large
email, it will still crash Evolution.

be downloading anything, but is still taking up a CPU core in top.
