I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 from a USB drive and this works OK.
However, attempting to run 13.10 from a USB drive produces a garbled
display. See attach

BUG: When opening up a jpeg file in GIMP 2.8.6 to start editing, saving
as existing or new file is impossible.

By the way, I just tested File Roller 3.4.1 on Xubuntu Release 12.04
(precise) 64-bit - Kernel Linux 3.2.0-58-generic and it works like a
charm from the very first attempt.

seems to be a linker regression that is exposed when linking an
application against the Mesa libGL, and then running it against the
