Ubuntu Software always asks for an Ubuntu Single Sign-On account when
installing or removing a snap package

Status in Ubuntu GNOME:

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in snapd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
If I try to uninstall a snap using Ubuntu Software, it asks for an Ubuntu
Single Sign-On account. It seems strange since if I use a terminal and do:
  $ sudo snap remove john-the-ripper

  Everything works as expected.

BTW: Ubuntu Software takes ages to find out the size of the snap
  package.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1308105] Re: Xfce resets TV mode to NULL when power cycled

2017-02-01 Thread Anna Thomas
Running Xubuntu 16.04.1 with all updates applied as of 31/01/17 this bug
affected me when using the HDMI port of a Braswell chipset Shuttle
XS36V5. When resuming my Samsung TV from standby the HDMI wouldn't wake
up and thus no picture. It was the only display device attached. Tried
various combinations of power management settings in UEFI/XFCE/TV to no
avail, as well as a different HDMI port on TV as well as different HDMI.

Upon a 'sudo reboot' from SSH or by pressing the power button on the
shuttle (had power button set to 'shutdown' instead of 'ask') the TV
would wake up within a second or two and show the shutting down logo.

Consulted your Freenode IRC channel, Flocculant suggested applying:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/269857837/xfce4-settings_4.12.0-3ubuntu1_amd64.deb

Which i did with 'dpkg -i xfce4-settings_4.12.0-3ubuntu1_amd64.deb &&
apt-get install -f' and this fixed it. Petition to get this fix applied
to a SRU for 16.04 thanks <3

Bug description:
I had an HTPC with Mythbuntu 12.04 installed. Upon upgrading a new
behavior that if the TV is power cycled it no longer detects a link
  with the HTPC.

When this happens I can find in the xorg log that there is an
  accompanying log item:

  [ 39829.509] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "NULL"

  After debugging with NVIDIA at
  https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/729955/linux/tv-stops-being-
  detected/ we've deteremined it's a X client that reacts to the RANDR
events causing the mode to be set to NULL.

Working through the list in an Xfce environment, the culprit is
xfsettingsd. If xfsettingsd is running, it causes the TV to come up
in a NULL mode. If it's killed, it remains in the mode it was
  previously running in.

Until this is fixed, this behavior can be worked around with a simple shell
script:
  ==
  #!/bin/sh
#Fix TV state when HDMI link is lost.
  #By Mario Limonciello

  OUTPUT="HDMI-0"
  BAD_MODE="1280x720"
  GOOD_MODE="1920x1080"

for MODE in $BAD_MODE $GOOD_MODE; do
   DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --output $OUTPUT --mode $MODE
   sleep 2
  done
  ==

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1590462] Re: Wizard city search should do searches in the middle of names

2017-02-01 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I’ve just discussed this with Paty and we agreed on the following.

Search should work the same way in the first-run setup as it does in
System Settings.

If those two search the same way, then comparing “the string and [any]
portions of the string” would regress bug 1454186. Fortunately, the
actual bug can be fixed without doing that (making this bug report,
incidentally, one more example of how “should” in a bug summary is
presumptive.)

In the spec for Time & Date settings I wrote: “As with any other search
field, any word you enter that is followed by a space or punctuation
should be treated as a complete word, while any word that is not should
be treated as if it might be either a complete word or the beginning of
a word.”

That wasn’t as precise as it needed to be. But I would have expected
searching “Hospitalet” to return “L'Hospitalet de Llobregat” without
doing full substring matching, because in the result it is preceded by
an apostrophe and so counts as the start of a separate “word”. Spec
updated.

** Summary changed:

- Wizard city search should do searches in the middle of names
+ City search “Hospitalet” doesn’t find L'Hospitalet de Llobregat

** Description changed:

The official name of my city is
L'Hospitalet de Llobregat
but it is often usually written as
Hospitalet de Llobregat

On the wizard city/timezone selection window we only search from the
beginning of the string so I could not find my city until i realized i may have
to type the
L'
  at the beginning.
+
+ : “As with any search field,
+ any series of letters immediately followed by a space or punctuation
+ character should match only complete words, while any series of letters
+ at the end of the string should match both complete words and the
+ beginnings of words. (In the terms being searched, a “word” is a series
+ of letters that is immediately preceded by the start of the string or
+ any non-letter character, and immediately followed by the end of the
+ string or any non-letter character.)”

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1413283] Re: "Set as default" is absent from "Open with.." context menu

Sorry for the "me, too" comment but I just want to press how much of an
oversight this is for a very common use case. I was close to giving up
before I finally found a page detailing the "set as default" button's
hiding place.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1581713] Re: Ubuntu Software always asks for an Ubuntu Single Sign-On account when installing or removing a snap package

2017-02-01 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
Here is our thinking on Ubuntu Core devices and user accounts.

Ubuntu Core is largely for devices that operate with almost no human
interaction. You install the device, it updates itself forever, life is
good.

In that case, most devices will not have many or any user accounts.
That's completely different to a laptop or developer system, or a normal
server, which has many people who might log into it on any given day.

For that reason, having the user account on Ubuntu Core be single-sign
accounts makes sense. This is exactly the trend in the world - look at
modern wifi access points, for example. You get a single management
account, usually in the cloud, and you manage all devices through that.

The net effect is much better security for these devices. In due course,
we will reduce dependency on the Ubuntu SSO (this is just the current
implementation, we envisage enabling people to have their own identity
systems). But the base idea that you don't want to be setting a separate
username and password on these devices is very well reasoned and
appropriate.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1631713] Re: Gnome wayland session doesn't source ~/.profile

2017-02-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package gnome-session - 3.22.2-2ubuntu1

---
gnome-session (3.22.2-2ubuntu1) zesty; urgency=medium

  * Merge with Debian unstable. Remaining changes:
- debian/control.in:
  + Recommend session-migration
+ Remove gnome-shell circular dependency to ease upgrades
  + Don't suggest desktop-base
+ Move xwayland dependency to gnome-session and
make gnome-session Arch: any
- Split ubuntu-session out of gnome-session.
- Add upstart user session and systemd user session:
  debian/data, debian/gnome-session-bin.user-session.upstart
- debian/gnome-session-bin.postinst, debian/gnome-session-bin.prerm:
Moved registering gnome-session binary as a session manager to
   gnome-session-bin package
- Add gnome-session-wayland transitional package
- don't install gnome-mimeapps.list (installed by desktop-file-utils in
  Ubuntu):
  debian/gnome-session-common.dirs, gnome-session-common.install,
  gnome-session-common.maintscript, gnome-session-common.postinst
- debian/patches/revert_remove_gnome_session_properties.patch,
  debian/patches/revert_remove_gnome_session_properties2.patch:
+ Keep the session-properties applet for ubuntu sessions
- debian/patches/13_display_session_properties.patch: Display
session-properties as the Startup Applications capplet was removed from
gnome-control-center, which makes it hard to discover the
  gnome-session-properties tool. (Closes: #683814)
- debian/patches/22_support_autostart_delay.patch:
Bugzilla patch to support adding a delay to autostart apps, using
a "X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay" key in the desktop file
- debian/patches/50_ubuntu_sessions.patch, debian/gnome-wayland.desktop:
  + Add Ubuntu session
+ Add --session=gnome to GNOME sessions now that the "ubuntu" session
is the default. Use TryExec to test if gnome-shell is installed.
- debian/patches/51_remove_session_saving_from_gui.patch:
add GNOME_SESSION_SAVE environment variable for people wanting to
use the save session still, knowing that it can break your system
  if used unwisely
- debian/patches/53_add_sessionmigration.patch:
launch session-migration if present at the start of the session. This
sync tool runns different session migration scripts that can be
  provided in various desktop packages.
- debian/patches/95_dbus_request_shutdown.patch: Add "RequestShutdown" and
"RequestReboot" DBus methods to allow other applications to shutdown or
reboot the machine via the session manager.
- debian/patches/103_kill_the_fail_whale.patch: Kill the Fail Whale as it
tends to be more annoying than helpful
- debian/patches/export_env_to_upstart.patch: Update the Upstart environment
before the plain D-Bus one. This is to work around a bug where Upstart
brokenly forwards variables which contain an "=" to the D-Bus environment,
resulting in invalid environment variables in the session (see bug
  #1630090).
  * Dropped patch applied in new version:
- git_fix_gpu_cache_info.patch

gnome-session (3.22.2-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Team upload

  [ Jeremy Bicha ]

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1649995] Re: Replace Google API key used by GNOME services

2017-02-01 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I tested this by adding a Google account to Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 and
making sure it worked in Evolution. I then updated the gnome-online-
accounts packages and made sure Evolution still worked. I rebooted and
made sure Evolution still worked. I checked Evolution's mail, calendar
and contacts integration with Google.

I've been using the new evolution-data-server and gnome-online-accounts
in Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 for several weeks and haven't seen the Google
authentication errors recently at all.

Bug description:

  ==
Some bugs in evolution-data-server (e-d-s) were causing daily limit errors
for those using Google services with evolution-data-server and apps that use it
(Evolution is a prominent example). Unfortunately, it looks like users using
older versions of e-d-s are causing those errors to affect everyone using e-d-s
since they are using the same API key. It's very difficult for GNOME to push
everyone to use an updated version of their software.

Therefore, this update changes the API key used by those using the
GNOME Online Accounts feature for Google services.

  Test Case
  =
Restart your computer after applying the updates.

Then use Evolution with a Google account configured by gnome-control-
center's Online Accounts. The easiest way to configure that correctly
  is to use Ubuntu GNOME.

Make sure that Evolution works without getting authentication errors
  with your Google services.

  Regression Potential

I think the only possibility for regression is if GNOME did not configure the
key correctly with Google's developer platform.

  Other Info
  ==
This was fixed in zesty in gnome-online-accounts 3.22.3-1.

This update depends on the evolution-data-server 3.22.3 SRU (LP:
#1639926) (now in yakkety-updates and fully phased) since we need to
make sure the user has a fixed version of e-d-s so we don't taint the
  new keys too!

We can't fix this for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS until we figure out how to
backport the needed e-d-s changed there.

I believe Evolution has three ways to use Google services: 1) GNOME
Online Accounts 2) evolution-data-server (e-d-s) has its own Google
authentication method 3) Ubuntu Online Accounts.

The errors are much less common for the e-d-s API key so upstream does
not intend to change that key. The e-d-s key is new, only existing in
Ubuntu 16.10 and above. (It's not even used in the Ubuntu 16.04 GNOME3
Staging PPA since --disable-google-auth is used there to not add a new
  universe dependency.)

Similarly, Ubuntu Online Accounts does not currently appear to be
  impacted (LP: #1650007).

Bug description:
When I start Firefox, even when run as root, I get an error message:

/usr/bin/python3: error while loading shared libraries: cannot apply
additional memory protection after relocation: Permission denied

As a result, Firefox only shows white or black content in browser tab
  (which is basically rendered empty).

I can work around this issue with a

  cd /etc/apparmor.d/disable
  ln -s ./../usr.bin.firefox
  apt-get install --reinstall --purge apparmor libapparmor-perl libapparmor1

After that, content is rendered again.

  I had this problem earlier
  (https://bugs.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/1643200) and worked around it
by installing a firefox extension "ubuntu modifications". But after
updating from 51.0.0 to 51.0.1, I got the same problem again and
enabling or disabling the extension did not help any more. Same for
enabling/disabling all the hardware acceleration and/or e10s settings
  in about:config.

Now that it seems to be an apparmor profile issue, I think that can be
fixed in a nice manner. And it also should see some priority.
Therefore, I think it makes sense to have a clean new ticket for this.

Ubuntu 16.10 has epiphany 3.22.0. We should update to 3.22.5 which fixes
quite a few bugs.

  https://git.gnome.org/browse/epiphany/tree/NEWS?h=gnome-3-22
  https://git.gnome.org/browse/epiphany/log/?h=gnome-3-22

  Test Case
  =
Install the update. Ensure that the app still works. Navigate to different
sites.

  Regression Potential

This is a new GNOME bugfix release in the stable 3.22 series. When there are
regressions, they will be fixed. (For instance the Alt+Left and Alt+Right
keyboard shortcuts stopped working in 3.22.3 but this was fixed in 3.22.4.)

No Ubuntu flavor includes epiphany by default.

to several different websites. I made sure that the Alt + Left/Right
arrow shortcuts still work.

Title:
  Update epiphany to 3.18.10

Status in epiphany-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in epiphany-browser source package in Xenial:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Impact
  ==
Ubuntu 16.04 has epiphany 3.18.5. We should update to 3.18.10 which fixes
quite a few bugs.

  https://git.gnome.org/browse/epiphany/tree/NEWS?h=gnome-3-18
  https://git.gnome.org/browse/epiphany/log/?h=gnome-3-18

  Test Case
  =
Install the update. Ensure that the app still works. Navigate to different
sites.

  Regression Potential

This is a new GNOME bugfix release in the stable 3.18 series. When there are
regressions, they will be fixed. (For instance the Alt+Left and Alt+Right
keyboard shortcuts stopped working in 3.18.9 but this was fixed in 3.18.10.)

No Ubuntu flavor includes epiphany by default.

  Other Info
  ==
Please accept the epiphany 3.22 SRU for Ubuntu 16.10 at the same time as some
of the bugs fixed in this 3.18 release are fixed in that 3.22 release too. LP:
#1657258

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1585863] Re: WiFi malfunction after suspend & resume stress - sudo wpa_cli scan required to fix it.

2017-02-01 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
#64 wrote "could this suggest this might be better fixed with a systemd
dependency?", well, http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man8/systemd-
sleep.8.html says

Note that scripts or binaries dropped in
/usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/ are intended for local use only and
should be considered hacks. If applications want to be notified of
system suspend/hibernation and resume, there are much nicer
   interfaces available.

(I can't find from that man-page what those interfaces are though.)

WiFi malfunction after suspend & resume stress - sudo wpa_cli scan

Status in OEM Priority Project:

Status in OEM Priority Project xenial series:

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Description:Ubuntu Yakkety Yak (development branch)
  Release:16.10
  Packages:
  libnm-glib-vpn1:amd64 1.2.2-0ubuntu2
  libnm-glib4:amd64 1.2.2-0ubuntu2
  libnm-util2:amd64 1.2.2-0ubuntu2
  libnm0:amd641.2.2-0ubuntu2
  network-manager 1.2.2-0ubuntu2

  Reproduce steps:
  1. Install fwts by `sudo apt-get install fwts`.
  2. Run the suspend & resume stress test.
  sudo fwts s3 --s3-multiple=30 --s3-min-delay=5 --s3-max-delay=5
--s3-delay-delta=5

  Expected result:
  The WiFi still functioned.

  Actual result:
The WiFi can not connect to any access point and we have to execute `sudo
wpa_cli scan` manually to make it work again.

P.S. Ubuntu 16.04 also has the same issue.
