New finding: the distortion seems to appear after reboot (without power
off). IMO some variables in sound card (probably gain) are not reset to
initial values during reboot and/or switch between audio sources (maybe
even during switch between browser tabs) and this over-steers final

I Just did an update of Ubuntu 17.10 and Libreoffice6 and still have the same
problem with access denied on the windows partition of my hard disk. In Ubuntu

My laptop screen is 3840x2160 while my external monitor is only
1680x1050. In order for the laptop monitor to be usable I have the
scaling set at 200 (this works wonderful). However, when I plug in my
external monitor it is scaled up to 200% as well making it unusable.
Update: So, no, EnableWayland=false didn't really fix the issue here.
Instead of the mouse being not clickable in gdm and gnome shell, gdm
works fine, but once I log in, I have artifacts all over the place
(greenish squares, single pixels from the normal image, etc). Leaving
EnableWayland=false

pavucontrol shows signal going to headphones when they are plugged in,
but nothing is playing. If I remove the headphones from the jack,
pavucontrol then shows signal going to speakers (which are working).

Opened alsamixer and ensured that no channels are muted (all are showing
the green oo symbol), and that all of the channels have volumes as high
as they will go. Still no luck in getting audio to pipe back through
my headphone jack.

Additionally, if I unplug my headphones I hear audio over my laptop's
speakers. I cannot listen to audio over the speakers at work however,
so this is not a helpful workaround.
