Same issue here with official 18.04 LTS release. I have installed HPLIP
3.18.4, but I get the error message, No System Tray Detected on this
system: Unable to start, exiting. What's worse is that the HP Officejet
printer will not print anything. It just keeps sending all print jobs
to "pause".

using alsa-mixer master volume changes with audio slider but output
volume does not change but can still be muted.
- changing PCM values directly changes output volume still works
- This problem does not occur when headphones are plugged in even after start up

Back to where I started with a non-bootable machine, after modifying
xorg.conf listed in post #121. I will go aheada purge these nvidia
drivers again, and try #123 to see if that works. This is a crazy
mess!!

Unfortunately, it did not help. Starting in safe mode gives me the same
error. Adding OpenGL values to the configuration file (they were not
present there) did not help either :/
What comes to my mind - I have nVidia graphic card but using the OS
driver, not the closed-sourced one. Could this be
