[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1911887] Re: Xorg freeze

2021-01-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. It appears you have the proprietary Nvidia
kernel driver installed but also are using the open source Xorg driver,
which is the wrong one. Please try removing and then reinstalling the
Nvidia driver in the 'Additional Drivers' app and then reboot.

Check that the GNOME settings still work correctly

  * Regression potential

The changes are small fixes but ensure each page of the setting is
still loading, also check that the printing panel layout is still
correct and that the sound panel works correctly since that's where
the less trivial changes have been commited

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1911456] Re: Can't receive files over bluetooth unless settings dialog is open

2021-01-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm not sure if this is a bug or a security feature. You might be able
to keep it enabled in the 'bluetoothctl' tool. Or try something like
'bt-obex -s'.

Bug description:
On 18.04 I could send files from my phone to my laptop at any time.
On 20.04 I can't get files to be accepted by the laptop over bluetooth. After
much frustration and experimenting, I figured out that it will work, but only
if the bluetooth settings dialog is open. If the settings dialog is not open,
the incoming file is rejected. If the dialog is closed after the file transfer
begins, the transfer continues but the file is discarded when the transfer is
complete. This is very frustrating.
I need to be able to send files (mostly photos and videos) from my phone to
my laptop without having to open the settings dialog on the laptop, just like I
could before upgrading.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1908167] Re: [SRU] pulseaudio: the headset-mic or heapdhone-mic could not be selected automatically if there is no internal mic

2021-01-17 Thread Hui Wang
The failed autopkgtests in the #20 is not a real regression, please
visit https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/o/openjdk-8/groovy/armhf,
we could see this testcase often fails by random chance.

And the change in this SRU doesn't affect openjdk, it only do some
change in a c file.

thx.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
On the Dell AIO machines, there is no internal mic, after plugging a
headset, users expect the headset-mic or headphone-mic could be selected
automatically. But with the current rule, the headset-mic/headphone-mic will
not be selected automatically and even users manually select them, they will
not show up in the gnome sound setting, and users could not record sound by
headset-mic/headphone-mic.

  [Fix]
backport a patch from pulseaudio mergerequest, the patch is going to be
merged to pulseaudio 14.1. This patch could be backported to hirsute without
any change, but need to be changed if backport it to groovy and focal.

  [Test]
With the old pulseaudio (prior to 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.10), plugging in a
headset to the problematic Dell AIO machine will not automatically select
headset-mic/headphone-mic, and they also do not show up in Gnome sound
settings, leading to failure to record any sound.

With the new proposed package, on those Dell AIO, plug a headset, open
the gnome sound setting, the headset-mic is selected automatically,
use the headset-mic to record the sound, the sound could be recorded
and the sound quality is good.

  [Where problems could occur]
This patch could change the policy of audio device switching, it will not
affect all audio devices, but only the devices which has AVAIL_UNKNOWN
available status, that means it has possibility to introduce the regression on
headphone-mic ,headset-mic, internal mic and internal speaker's switching since
they all has AVAIL_UNKNOWN status. For example, after unpluging the headset,
the input device will not switch to internal mic automatically or after unplug
the headphone, the output device will not switch to internal speaker
automatically. But this possibility is very low, we have tested the patch on
many Dell and Lenovo machines, all worked well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1911219] Re: [nouveau] Xorg freeze

2021-01-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks but unfortunately that did not help. Next please try all of these
steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

On new Intel SoCs, after all connectors are unplugged and the system becomes
headless, it cannot detect monitor hotplug event from type-c port.

  [Fix]
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/1561

Based on "drm/i915 Intel GFX Driver, Hotplug" [1]:
"Finally, the userspace is responsible for triggering a modeset upon
receiving the hotplug uevent, disabling or enabling the crtc as needed."

  [Test]
Unplug type-c monitor from an Intel Tiger Lake desktop. Replug the monitor
back, monitor is blank.
With the fix applied, the system can detect monitor again.

  [Where problems could occur]
This fix disables CRTCs when there's no monitor, if driver has trouble
dealing with it, we may see something break.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1909732] Re: Gnome Shell freezes for 2 minutes on unlock when mobile phone is connected (log shows gvfsd PTP errors)

2021-01-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
In order to track down the source of the problem further, you would need
to keep the phone plugged in and then try:

  * gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.desktop-icons show-mount
false

  * Toggling extensions in the Extensions app.

If you are not interested in doing that, it's OK. We can just close the
bug.

Desktop gradually increases response lag to clicks in 20.04 (Fixed by
  Alt+F2, "r"))

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
After a day or so of uptime, system will grow quite sluggish to
respond to mouse clicks. Clicking on an app in the dock with multiple
windows will lag up to 1 second, clicking different windows will do
the same. Curiously, right clicking on the desktop takes longer,
sometimes over 2 seconds for the menu to appear. Clicking the
Calendar/Notification area and other areas of the shell yield the same
  issue.

Actual drawing performance does NOT seem to be affected, as browsing
and in-application clicking is still snappy. Highlighting icons by
hovering over the dock is also real-time.

This has reliably occurred after more than a day of uptime on multiple
occasions. My machine is a Ryzen 3600 with 32GB RAM and an NVIDIA
1050Ti (Proprietary driver) No unusually high CPU usage is found, nor
is there anything that seems to be using very much RAM.

Using Alt+F2 and "r" to restart mutter instantly restores
  responsiveness

Current version of mutter is 3.36.6

Fractional scaling applies to both monitors when you only want it on

Status in Mutter:

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I have installed Ubuntu 20.04 about 2-3 weeks ago (for the single
motive that has fractional scalling) and when activating fractional
scalling worked fine, in the meantime i reinstalled again Ubuntu 20.04
(laptop warranty issue) on same hardware but using the latest Ubuntu
20.04 version and now when i activate fractional scalling it does not
  work anymore.

The issue is that it basically zooms both the displays, i can explain
best by attaching the printscreens and a picture with my phone on the
same thing. You will see in the photo taken with the phone how it
actually scales now and how the screenshots are taken...

Let me know what logs/commands etc is needed to pinpoint this which i
  think is a regression.

The monitor on which i want to scale is 4k and is connecting through DELL
DA300 adapter through USB-C/Thunderbolt ( i have also tried using Dell Dock
WD19 but same issue).

nvidia-340 dkms fails to build against the current HWE kernel in focal,
regressing the user experience.

  [Test case]
Install the update, check that the dkms builds and works.

  [Where things could go wrong]
The changes only add support for newer kernels so that the module can build,
and it's identical to what's in groovy. In theory it could break the build
against 5.4 but that's highly unlikely.

Bug description:
From any application where you have a "save as" or "open" option, the
dialog displays, but it takes forever. I have a i5 with 16GB RAM and 2
SSD's, so the machine is not slow. However, if I use gedit and click
open / Other documents it takes 6 to 7 seconds before the file dialog
is properly displayed. This does not even get better with reuse. I
opened gedit just now and the first time it took 7 seconds. Then I
pressed Cancel and repeated the process - it still took more than 6
seconds before the dialog was properly displayed. Often I would only
see "Other locations" and then default places (Home, Documents etc)
and bookmarks (I have about 8 bookmarks of which 2 are network shares)
are displayed. These items are added one by one - maybe one every half
second. Often it takes a few seconds before the first location other
than "Other Locations" is displayed. Even the file panel is not
immediate at first and you can see how lines are added one by one.
Take into account that my home folder is on an SSD, so populating a
file list should be lightning fast. I have looked at the CPU activity,
but it does not go over about 10% during display of open and close
  dialogs.

Just be aware that this is not specific to gedit - all applications
using gnome file dialog has the same problem.

Please see the attached screen recording.

Encrypted attachments cannot be opened or saved as decrypted files

Status in Arch Linux:

Bug description:
I have been using enigmail in thunderbird until I upgraded Ubuntu and
with it thunderbird to the latest version 1:78.3.2+build1-0ubuntu1

As enigmail is now integrated in thunderbird, I have gone through the
painful upgrade process (it does not allow to look into
passwordmanager for the pasphrase of the gpg keys it wants to import
by blocking all other windows), and decryption of emails now works.

But when looking at a decrypted email, fully being able to read the
text content, when I want to use the Menu option "Decrypt and Open" by
right clicking on an attachment (pdf in this case), nothing happens.

What I expect to happen: The pdf file being shown to me in the pdf
viewer. Or some error being displayed, or maybe I am asked for my gpg
  passphrase again for additional security.

When trying the option "Decrypt and save as", next I can select a folder and
filename, (the pdf name without .gpg) and chose "save" - but when looking into
that folder, there is no decrypted file. (I tried this plenty of time, I am
sure its not there, and I did this action before the upgrade many times
successfully).

What I would expect: the attached file without the .gpg suffix (the
filename proposed when opening the dialog, which I did not change) in
  the selected directory.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1902801]

2021-01-17 Thread Mkmelin+mozilla
It would be better to clone this bug to another one for the specific
case, since otherwise tracking flags will all be wrong.

Title:
Encrypted attachments cannot be opened or saved as decrypted files

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in Arch Linux:
  Fix Released

2021-01-17 Thread Kai Engert
Sorry for the delays, I was out sick.

I can confirm the bug. When recently re-enabling this feature, I had tested
only using encrypted attachments which decrypt to plain text.
The bug occurs if the attachment decrypts to binary data.

I have a fix that I will send for review.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1912030] Re: Crash unless ffmpeg direct rendering disabled with ATI X1400

2021-01-17 Thread Boris Gjenero
But, not all VLC video outputs are supposed to use OpenGL, so I don't
see why Mesa is relevant. One of the crash backtraces doesn't involve
Mesa.

Crash unless ffmpeg direct rendering disabled with ATI X1400

Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After upgrading to Ubuntu 20.10, VLC started crashing when I tried to
play video. I tried changing to different video output methods, but
none of them worked. In the past, I remember several methods working
  fine.

In the ffmpeg advanced preferences page, disabling the direct
rendering option made video playback work.

I thought the vaapi errors VLC reports had something to do with it,
but apparently not, because they still happen with successful
playback. This is on a Dell Inspiron 6400 with ATI Mobility Radeon
X1400, which doesn't support hardware decoding of the H.264 video I'm
  trying to play.

  Here's one backtrace:
Thread 26 "vlc" received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1892276] Re: thumbnails stretched on desktop 20.04 after previous bug fix release

2021-01-17 Thread Tengda Han
A possible fix:
In
https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/ShellExtensions/desktop-icons/-/blob/master/fileItem.js#L373
 (or locally
/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/desktop-icons@csoriano/fileItem.js):
Replace: `let containerWidth = (this._icon.allocation.x2 -
this._icon.allocation.x1) * scaleFactor;`
with `let containerWidth = (this._icon.allocation.x2 -
this._icon.allocation.x1);`

The scaleFactor here is unnecessary.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1886653] Re: cups-pki-expired

2021-01-17 Thread polzin
Same here, with a Dell Color MFP E525w.

This page https://gwolf.org/2020/05/certified-printer-fumes.html suggest
that it has to do with an expired ssl certificate of the printer. If a
check my printers certificate it has expired one year ago. After
upgrading from ubuntu 18.04 to 20.20 it stopped working.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 938751] Re: Images are washed out or colors are skewed in some apps (particularly Image Viewer and Chrome)

2021-01-17 Thread Mostafa Shahriar Kabir Shohab
same happened to me. I've never got to experience Linux in my whole life.
my post is here if anyone interested- https://askubuntu.com/a/1301856/1162787
I install Linux/Ubuntu, looked at the colour, not satisfied, think I can accept
and use, after a few days- I move to Windows again. Totally unacceptable colour
of display. I just wanted a peaceful OS, not garbage like Windows but Samsung
gave Proprietary motherboard software for display colours on laptop pcs. The
only way is Intel HD Graphics Control Panel, I found after I change display
colour profiles from "Samsung Settings" software, the HD Graphics Control
Panel- Display values got changed. Thats good news, I can use those values and
change in Linux. But the problem is I can't choose contrast, saturation in
xrandr! I can't choose the exact value of "Brightness : -11(minus)", in linux
xrandr (0.99? 0.991?) neither can increase contrast in xcalib. What can I do? I
got no option.
Summery: Some motherboard software changes HD Graphics Control Panel Display
values, you can exactly use that info. But you can't convert them nor use them
correctly in linux. there is no way!
So low priority. Not a single software made to fix this. Nobody cares? Just buy
a colourimeter hardware? If UI, Display experience is worse, no one comes to
Linux just to have Privacy stuff.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1898462] Re: [groovy] Drag and drop files from Desktop to Nautilus freezes gnome-shell

2021-01-17 Thread Parham Moieni
I have the same issue. I installed it on 20.10 but it didn't change
anything. there was not any problem on 20.04 version. It happened after
updating to 20.10.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Drag and drop files from Desktop to Nautilus freezes gnome-shell in
Ubuntu 20.10. There is no way to recover without killing gnome-shell
  externally or rebooting.

  [Test Case]

  1. Create a file in ~/Desktop
  2. Open a nautilus (Files) window of a different directory.
  3. Drag the new file from the desktop into the nautilus (Files) window.

The shell should not become unresponsive. Also, the drag is expected
to fail and snap back. That's a different issue (bug 1813441) not
  being fixed here.

  [Where problems could occur]

An extension with syntax errors may fail to load leaving the user with
reduced shell functionality. A more faulty extension might crash the
  entire shell after loading.

  [Other Info]

  Patch is in bug 1898005.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1909732] Re: Gnome Shell freezes for 2 minutes on unlock when mobile phone is connected (log shows gvfsd PTP errors)

2021-01-17 Thread Matthew Hudson
Hi - the issue has not happened again, I have not had the phone
connected to laptop as often.

FYI - I do not, as far as I am aware, have any extensions running.

But I have run the 2nd command as instructed - is it also worth running
the following?

gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.desktop-icons show-mount false

Thank you for your help!

This may now be resolved - not sure if a bug or not! Would be good if
these changes were not required though.

Title:
Gnome Shell freezes for 2 minutes on unlock when mobile phone is
connected (log shows gvfsd PTP errors)

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After my laptop suspends I am unable to login back in again.

I type in my password then everything freezes - I can drop to a
  terminal and run

  sudo service gdm restart

this gives me access again to my laptop - though obviously everything I was
working on has been closed down and potentially lost.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1738774]

2021-01-17 Thread roots
Confirming blurry SVG (as well as PNG) icons.

Libreoffice 7.0.4.2
Ubuntu 20.04 Xfce4 4.16
4K-Screen@3840x2160
Xfce4 set to 2x window scaling

Probably helpful to narrow down this issue: In general, even PNG icons
are rendered correctly with most applications (Firefox, Evolution,
Pluma, all XFCE4 UI) - however, the same effect happens with Thunar,
where replacing the XFCE4 icon theme with one using SVG also leads to
blurry rendering.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1883497] Re: Only timing mode list in EDID supported on continuous freq monitors

2021-01-17 Thread Timo Aaltonen
This commit caused a regression to some user upstream, and we have a fix
in hirsute but it needs to be applied to groovy as well. As there are no
known bugs filed on LP about the regression, we don't have a way to
reproduce the issue so the test case here is to just verify the original
use case still works.

Focal has the fix already because there was a mid-air collision upload
of xorg-server to groovy, resulting in my local groovy branch missing
the CVE fixes from 2:1.20.9-2ubuntu1.1 that got in the archive. I
rejected my groovy upload because it had the wrong buglink, but then for
some reason didn't reupload a fixed and rebased version. The focal
backport was eventually based on my local -2u1.1 instead of what was in
groovy.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Some new laptop display set EDID continuous freq bit 1.
Then Xorg only uses the timing modes defined in EDID, no other modes are
shown on Xorg.

  Upstream Bug:
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/313

Fix of Xorg in merge request:
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/merge_requests/421

https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=6a79a737e2c0bc730ee693b4ea4a1530c108be4e

this is required to support new laptop models which use such panels

  [Test case]
Test that a proper list of modes is shown with a panel that uses the new EDID.

  [Regression potential]
The patch retains the previous code path for setting modes on GTF-able
monitors, and only adds support for non-GTF monitors. So in that sense there
shouldn't be any regression potential, this has been reviewed by an upstream
expert.
