[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1957181] Re: Screen freeze

2022-01-15 Thread Simon
Thank you for the reply. Indeed removing the dock worked.
More precisely, I noticed that I had (accidentally) connected two mouses one
via the dock and one wireless via a usb port (and the trackpad ofcourse).
Taking one of the two mouses out of the equation solved the problem for me. No
more crashes since.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Some packages stall on installing. These are packages that generate multiple
debconf prompts (the prompts may be empty and so not user visible, e.g.
gconf2-common).

  [Test Case]
  1. Remove gconf2-common (warning, may uninstall packages like gnome-terminal):
  $ sudo apt purge gconf2-common
  2. Download the debian package of Chrome from www.google.com/chrome.
  3. Install the package (browser will prompt, or double click on package in
Nautilus).

  Expected result:
  Chrome installs correctly.

  Observed result:
  The installation hangs on 51%.

  [Regression Potential]
The debconf conde was modified to support multiple requests. This could
expose other debconf issues or break other .deb install code.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1688721] Re: Packages that trigger multiple debconf prompts fail to install

2022-01-15 Thread invernosantigos
So far, the solution has been to apply
  sudo dpkg --configure -a
  sudo apt --fix-broken install
  sudo dpkg --configure -a

Which doesn't seem like something that will bring happiness to anyone.
But the worst is that these solutions have not worked for everyone. A lot
of people gave up and had to reinstall. I was left out, for example, and I was
killing myself with this problem until I almost reincarnated. I'm sure when I
die, I'll be canonized...

I found ! I found the problem (and a better solution than what the veterans
have recommended): Manually installing gconf2-common via dpkg -- which is
normally considered dangerous and not recommended because of the risks.
dconf2-common is definitely bugged, but it's not empty or false bug reports as
some veterans and developers have said out there -- it's much more serious :
The configuration is incomplete and errors go up to initramfs, which
accumulates errors, until installation break. this accumulation even prevents
the complete and correct installation of packages in the following updates, and
these errors also go up to Initramfs, in a vicious circle that ends up breaking
the installation. And the unfortunate gconf-service-backend and gconf-service
have a circular dependency between them. In short, gconf is all shit by sheer
sloppiness of the developer. A mistake is fine, but 2, including circular
dependency is just plain sloppiness, really, indefensible! The difficulty here
is "Dreadful" level. But I've had a lot of practice installing packages by
hand, since the time of the legendary Build-Essential bug in Trusty Tahr, which
broke the system every time you tried to install the damn thing, and took 2
years to solve... challenge, and I had to download all the packages by hand and
install them one-by-one, in order of dependencies, until I found the bugs. More
than 20 depes... At the time, the bugs were, for example: a circular dependency
on libc++-6-dev, and a dependency on it that was rotten and had to install the
Lucid version, a brutal downgrade, 2 versions below. It was a school! I applied
the same method here, although I don't miss the thing at all. The trick itself
is to download the dependencies and place them in individual numbered folders,
following the order they were installed in the dependency chain, and then open
a terminal in each one and apply the dreaded "sudo dpkg --force-breaks -i *".
This option is very dangerous, and it takes a lot of marijuana to face this
adventure... So I first test with the "sudo dpkg -i *" version to see if there
are any other pending dependencies. When approved, then yes, I reinstall with
the option sudo dpkg --force-breaks -i * to ensure the package configuration
without false or "semi-false" error warnings (which look fake, but generate
errors in the initramfs ). The package gconf2-common can only be installed by
this option in a folder ONLY with it. Otherwise, it is unconfigured, and it
fucks all dependents of it that comes after... The option * should install all
the packages that are in the folder together. But the new version of dpkg has
one of those security features of dubious utility, which allows you to install
a maximum of 3 depes together at once with this option (using the * replaces
the package name -- instead of typing each name one- by one, with risk of
error, we use *, in place of the name of the packages and dpkg installs all the
dependencies that are in the folder ). Then you have to install
gconf-service-backend and gconf-service TOGETHER in the same folder, folder 2,
BECAUSE IT HAS CIRCULAR DEPENDENCE, and it is only possible to install circular
dependency without breaking with "sudo dpkg --force-breaks - i *" and installed
both together at the same time. Finally, in a third folder and with a third
terminal, we install gconf2. If after all this installation you test with "sudo
dpkg --configure -a" in a terminal, there is no response back, because there is
no more configuration of pending files.

Well, that's all (Whew...) but the really bad thing is that you can't do it
in a virtual machine, you have to risk your neck. Why ? Because this type of
bug, like many others, tends not to happen with a fresh install, just a few
updates after installing gconf2-commom bugs. If you install everything in one
session, no problem, but after you update dpkg and restart the machine, the new
version of dpkg -- much more error intolerant -- bugs gconf2-common... That's
why I said it was the developer's unforgivable sloppiness: He wrote the package
triggers for the system's native install dpkg version (the install CdRom) but
not for the working version, the current version of dpkg. So, on the first
update, it fucked up!

An eternal classic of this type of error, are the appimage packages, WHICH
DOES NOT WORK IN LINUX MINT after some updates... They are simply not
recognized as executables, no matter how

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1958038] Re: What package to report this about? Wifi driver not by default, but package is available.

2022-01-15 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is about finding & fixing problems thus preventing future
users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

The last planned 18.04 ISO was 18.04.5, so new installation media is/was
expected. Extra media was required because of the boothole
vulnerability (because 18.04.5 media no longer booted on fully patched
hardware) thus the re-spin of 18.04.6 for Ubuntu (flavors were already
EOL at that point so no media was created for them).

I'm not sure what your issue is, but 18.04 is a release in maintenance
mode only for packages that are still supported being Ubuntu Desktop,
Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Cloud, and Ubuntu Base.

For this issue to be resolved, it should be addressed on the current
development release (currently jammy or what will be 22.04) as 18.04 was
developed, released and is now just maintained for security patches for
certain packages.

I'll change the status to "Incomplete" as it appears you're after a
change in ISO production but have used an inappropriate release for that
purpose. If it still occurs with current development media I'd suggest
re-filing a new bug report.

Kubuntu 18.04 is EOL (https://kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-18-04-lts-bionic-
beaver-reaches-end-of-kubuntu-support/) & no changes to media will be
performed for 18.04 media.

This is not rare issue, and will be more needed, since people will
stop using 32-bit windows and will want to have Ubuntu 18.04 32-bit to
work out-of-box and even before end of life comming to this in 2023
year, then it was already not a rare issue. Needs to be fixed before
EOL, so that old 32- bit people can join to fix with old computers
that wont work on windows to fix bug #1

So was trying to find out why i have errors when updating just clean
installed 32 bit 18.04.5 for thinking that i moved lan. I think moved,
but turns out also had another problem- wifi driver isnt automatically
installed even when have lan connection and need to search around.

Some people finding solution (cant find this link now) has been installing
also broadcom-sta-dkms, that made lan not work and for newbies and me a little
knowing, its hard to think to remove something that im just for testing
triaging solution finding process installing wrong one.
So need to have package installed when its been hardware detected or
mentions, that need to get new package for wifi thrue manual USB delivery and
command help or lan connection, if exists.

  Package sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer
  installs also b43-fwcutter

It should be that hardware is detected and auto selected to install.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1956838] Re: drag and drop broken chromium snap

2022-01-15 Thread wdoekes
Personally, I think it's a waste of space to setup timeshift just
because Ubuntu snapcraft cannot keep more than two versions alive... I
think there is something wrong in the snap ecosystem if we cannot choose
between more than two versions which are both broken.

My two cents.

including Chromium. In a virtual machine, I was able to revert the
Chromium snap to version 96.0.4664.110 and drag and drop works.

  1. The "Workspace 1" preview is very elongated when compared to not only all

use it with a local HTTP server to serve some Ubuntu PCs that have no
access to the Internet at all, just to an air-gapped local network.
When using the command line via "apt update" and "apt upgrade",
everything works perfectly fine, I'm able to update, upgrade, install
and remove packages like if I were connected directly to Canonical
  servers.

The problem is that the Ubuntu Software Center doesn't work in this
setting. It only says that I'm disconnected from the Internet and it
doesn't recognize the local HTTP repository that's configured and the
rest of the system uses just fine. Users complain because they prefer
to use the more intuitive GUI and that's understandable, but I don't
know what else to do so I think this is a bug and no Google result
seems to know how to fix this.

OS: Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS right now, but the problem was present in past
  versions also.

What I expect to happen: the Ubuntu Software Center recognizes the
  local HTTP repositories and works.

What instead happens: the Ubuntu Software Center doesn't work because
it says I'm disconnected from the Internet.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1958017] [NEW] Screen scaling reset every reboot

2022-01-15 Thread 3DRaven
Public bug reported:

I set in settings scaling for my 2560x1600 laptop screen. After reboot
this settings reset every time. And I can't set custom scale factor. I
used for this functionality simple script:

# Enable rotation lock to avoid issues with xrandr.
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.touchscreen
orientation-lock true

# Xrandr scaling hack, --panning is used in order to let
# the mouse navigate in all of the 'generated'
# screen space.
xrandr --output DP-4 --mode 2560x1600 --scale 1.333x1.333 --panning 3413x2133

# Change scaling factor (GNOME)
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 2

# Confirm script execution
echo "Script finished execution"

It working fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1500387] Re: System boots to a black screen and the customer has to close the lid and reopen it to trigger a DPMS event and then video is restored

2022-01-15 Thread Paul White
This issue has sat incomplete for over six years now without any input
from the reporter so it is being closed as "Invalid".

As per the request in comment #45, if this is still an issue when using
a currently supported release of Ubuntu anyone other than the reporter
should open a new bug report of their own by issuing the command

  ubuntu-bug-xorg

in a terminal.

Sometimes the mouse pointer becomes invisible for a while; then -- and

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1958012] [NEW] text in italics appears as boxes

2022-01-15 Thread Krister Swenson
Public bug reported:

An update to my system has broken italics support in gnome terminal. This makes
it hard to edit latex files with VIM, since VIM will show all text within

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1956838] Re: drag and drop broken chromium snap

2022-01-15 Thread Tom
You can esily restore an old Snap version:

fetch the old chromium_1854.snap from your Timeshift folder from before
Jan 7th from /var/lib/snapd/snaps

Install the file and delete the new one with sudo snap install
chromium_1854.snap

When the system installs the new version in the next update cycle,
revert it again with: sudo snap revert chromium

Then it will stay until you update manually.

Bug description:
  I've already filed a "question"
  (https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/238002), but I came to
the conclusion it's indeed a bug.

I have a Deskjet 3520 All-in-one and no matter what I do, scans always
arrive with JPEG artifacts. For example, with hp-scan, when I disable
compression, I get the following error message:

"error: Unable to set option compression to value None"

When running XSane, in the advanced settings menu, I get JPEG as only
compression option. Manually setting the compression to "none" in the
drc file has no positive effect either. In any case, scans arrive with
  severe JPEG artifacts.

Used hplip version is 3.13.10 on Kubuntu 13.10. I've attached the
  output of hp-check.
