I have not noticed this in Ubuntu 14.04.1 until now because I had
previous been using Openbox (LXDE Desktop Environment), but after
switching back to Unity I noticed this.
I haven't seen any issues prior with any OpenGL programs under the LXDE
Desktop Environment nor so far any artifacts/glitches
grant any
special powers to that user, still relies on group membership and
PolicyKit rules.
Essentially as a temporary workaround the following lines hide the user:

Just another addition to the chorus. Accessing OS X file servers seemed
to cause the issue. CPU maxes out with a gvfsd-afp process for every
folder I connected to via a bookmark. Simply ejecting all of these
resulted in all gvfsd-afp processed terminating and the laptop returning
to normal.
Confirming that this issue exists using Empathy on 13.04 as well.

This seems to be caused by the bcmwl Broadcom driver for the bcm4313.
I can confirm this symptom as well - all other network connected devices grind
to a halt with this driver - i.e. Streaming media on xbox360 is unusable - I
put my laptop to sleep and BAM - all devices are good again... wake
Interestingly, if I do a sudo iwconfig eth1 with the bcmwl driver, I also get
a kernel panic. Can anyone confirm this behaviour?
To confirm, I'm running Raring and seeing these symptoms where reporter states

Just to note that I have 12.04 with all patches installed and the
File-Send behaviour does not pick up the default e-mail client. Having
sensible-lomua in Options - Internet - E-mail still picks up
Evolution putting thunderbird in picks up Thunderbird quite nicely.
