[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1868019] [NEW] Add method to enable fractional scaling

2020-03-18 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Fractional scaling is currently requires enabling an experimental feature in
Mutter to use it. We would like this feature to be easily enabled by users.

[Test Case]
1. Open Settings
2. Select Displays panels

Expected result:
Scale can be set to fractional values (e.g. 125%). There is a UI control to
enable fractional scaling (disabled by default).

Observed result:
Scale can only be set to multiples of 100% unless the feature was enabled. No
UI control is shown for Fractional scaling.

[Regressional Potential]
New UI code risks introducing new bugs. Users enabling fractional scaling may
trigger new bugs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862087] Re: High RSS useage for gnome-software background process

2020-03-11 Thread Robert Ancell
I found a leak in snapd-glib, which is fixed in snapd-glib 1.56. It's
not clear to me how to read the heaptrack data, as that leak doesn't
look significant to me there. Perhaps try again with updated focal to
see if there's any significant difference?

  Do not show appearance tab in vanilla gnome-control center

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  I am not using the ubuntu modifications of gnome-shell and therefore
  the Appearance tab in the gnome-control center is essentially useless,
  and what's worse choosing an option in the window colors selection
  simply crashes control center.

  Therefore it would be appreciated to only show the appearance tab when using
the ubuntu-session.
  If this is not possible please create a separate package
gnome-control-center-ubuntu since I want to be able to use gnome-shell as
intended by upstream without the ubuntu modifications being forced on me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1865871] Re: appearance setting view shows thick border

2020-03-09 Thread Robert Ancell
This is because the setting tab has keyboard focus - it's the same for
all the tabs. If you change focus, e.g. on appearance select the the
"Position on Screen" combo box then the border goes away.

Is this just the way it is rendered in GTK/the theme?

Status in sane-backends package in Debian:

Bug description:
  In Focal we are still a bit old-fashioned regarding scanning. We are
  still at the ancient SANE 1.0.27! That is really INSANE.

  Current version is 1.0.29 and it contains a very important new feature
  which will make hundreds (thousands?) of new scanners work with
  Ubuntu. This new feature is Apple AirScan support as a client. I have
  introduced a lot of nice printing stuff to support AirPrint, making
  lots of printers (practically all modern network printers) working,
  and all the multi-function devices under these (printer and scanner in
  one) do AirScan, so all these scanner will work with SANE 1.0.29 (if
  yours does not, it is a bug in SANE, please report).

  The AirScan support is provided by the new "escl" backend. supporting
  the eSCL protocol AirPrint is based on. The protocol uses HTTP and
  XML, so this works out-of-the-box if your printer is connected to the
  network, if it is connected via USB it work via IPP-over-USB using the
  ippusbxd package.

  Changes list from upstream:

  - Backends
 + adds an escl backend (theoretically supporting all AirPrint devices with
a scan unit
 + adds support for 23 new scanner models via existing backends
 + significantly changes genesys and pixma backends
 + fixes bugs in canon_dr, fujitsu, hp3900, mustek_usb2, plustek and
xerox_mfp backends
 + fixes all compiler warnings on Debian 10 (#120)
 + fixes portability issues for uClibc-ng and MacOS builds
 + adds support to record and replay USB I/O traffic
 + adds timestamps to debug logs

  debdiff attached.

  Theme: use other exported colors

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Adwaita and Yaru both export colors at the top of their CSS file from within
this source files:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/blob/master/gtk/theme/Adwaita/_colors-public.scss#L84

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/blob/gtk-3-24/gtk/theme/Adwaita/_colors-public.scss

  gnome-software uses some of those colors in their in-app CSS that overwrites
the global gtk theme:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/blob/master/src/gtk-style.css

  Most likely those are the correct colors. In three cases sadly not and
  it is too late to get an upstream change for 20.04 now because gnome
  is already in UI freeze for this cycle:

  1) The round checkmarks inside the App boxes that show that the app is
  installed are orange instead of green, which is semantically wrong
  since they are not selected and should instead show that you
  successfully installed that app:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/blob/master/src/gtk-style.css#L12
  Change
  .installed-icon {
color: @theme_selected_bg_color;
  }
  to
  .installed-icon {
color: @success_color;
  }

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/blob/gtk-3-24/gtk/theme/Adwaita/_colors-public.scss#L84
  -> exported to:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/blob/gtk-3-24/gtk/theme/Adwaita/gtk-contained.css#L2021

  2) The little [1] boxes inside the "stackswitcher" in the headerbar (it's
actually a buttonbox in this case, but this is offtopic) that show up if you
are either installing X apps or have X updates would be orange, if we would not
"hack" a bg box-shadow over them to make them green. This is first of all a
dirty hack and secondly there are little orange pixels showing up at the
rounding
  Change
  .counter-label {
...
...
background-color: mix(@theme_selected_bg_color,
@theme_selected_fg_color, 0.3);
...
...
...
  }

  To

...
background-color: @success_color;
...
...
...
  }

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/blob/master/src/gtk-style.css#L422

  3) The "given" stars are not visible in both Adwaita and Yaru dark. For some
reason, upstream transparentizes them into oblivion with the "shade-function".
The enabled stars should just use the theme's fg color:
  Change
  .star-enabled,
  .star-enabled:disabled {
color: shade(@theme_fg_color, 0.8);
  }
  to
  .star-enabled,
  .star-enabled:disabled {
color: @theme_fg_color;
  }

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/blob/master/src/gtk-style.css#L412

  Thank you very much in advance! I try to get this into gnome-shell's
  upstream repo in the next cycle

Frederik - can you propose these changes upstream now? Even though may
not land, they're worth discussing now to confirm they are correct. It's
also not too hard to get a freeze exception if the change is obviously
correct.

  This seems excessive. I'll try running under heaptrack to see if

Title:
  gnome-software tries to install snap updates in the background,
  causing unprompted polkit authentication for authorisation to install
  packages

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Every morning about ~30mins after powering on my focal machine I get
  (unprompted) a gnome-shell policykit authorisation popup saying
  'authentication is required to install software' - I haven't yet
  actually authorised it since I wasn't sure what was causing it,
  however I notice that if I cancel the authorisation then I see a bunch
  of notifications from gnome-software about updates having been
  successfully installed (even though I presume it hasn't been since I
  never authorised it).

  Is gnome-software fighting snapd to refresh snaps?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1862158] Re: gnome-software tries to install snap updates in the background, causing unprompted polkit authentication for authorisation to install packages

2020-02-09 Thread Robert Ancell
Andrew - that patch seems reasonable with the existing code, as the
daemon does the auto-updates, so no client should be performing it. This
should probably be done with a quirk, so the update monitor doesn't need
to special case Snaps (or the firmware as it currently does). But that
is better discussed on an upstream MR.

James - G-S doesn't currently have a mechanism to say why each operation
is being performed, but I imagine we could add one. In this case it
doesn't make sense as G-S shouldn't try and auto update.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1042409] Re: Install Updates button in Details panel leads to redundant check for updates

anymore.

  Install Updates button in Details panel leads to redundant check for
  updates

Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in update-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  When I open the Details settings panel, I can click the Install
  Updates button on the bottom right when updates are available. When I
  click that button, Update Manager opens and (as is the default
  behaviour) begins checking for updates. This does not fit nicely with
  the label on the button, and the activity is redundant: the system
  already checks for updates when the Details panel is opened, and the
  button says "Checking for Updates" while that happens.

Bug description:

  This is polkit 0.106. There's a major change in this release which is
  a switch from .pkla files (keyfile-format) to .rules files
  (JavaScript).

  We may want to hold off on the new version because it requires
  rewriting the configuration files, and adds a dependency on mozjs185,
  which will need a MIR (and getting a MIR may be problematic)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1086783] Re: New PolicyKit 0.106 changes configuration file format

2020-01-07 Thread Robert Ancell
An update on the current state of this:
- polkit upstream currently depends on mozjs60
- mozjs60 is in main, but only for the use of GNOME Shell.
- The current polkit Debian/Ubuntu package has 61 patches in it, backporting
lots of changes from version 106 to 116.
- There are upstream requests for running polkit without a JS interpreter.
- There is an open MR to switch from mozjs to duktape
(https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/polkit/polkit/merge_requests/35).
- Debian experimental has polkit 116 packaged (i.e. with JS backend).
- I've made a proof of concept branch which reinstates the local backend
(https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/rancell/polkit/tree/traditional-backend) which
works.

It's desirable that we run the latest version in Debian/Ubuntu, which requires
one of:
- We re-assess the use of mozjs and decide if it's acceptable in this case.
- We support the switch from mozjs to duktape if that's a safer option.
- We propose the old local backend upstream as an alternative to the JS backend.
- We carry the local backend as a patch on upstream.

  This is not the case for Snap packages. You have to click into the

  This is confusing these days as you can have the same package from

  SNAP sources should be shown the same way.

  A user would want to know the source, especially if it is a

  Ideally you could also filter based on the source as well

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1854376] Re: Flathub Download Size is confusing

2019-11-28 Thread Robert Ancell
I'm pretty sure the Snap doesn't include the runtime, which is a little
confusing but something you generally only hit the first time you
download.

I recommend you file the Flatpak size issue in
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/issues as it's not
something we're actively working on in Ubuntu.

Title:
  Flathub Download Size is confusing

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  The information provided for Snap/FlatPak packages is confusing and
  should be improved.

  For example, the Flatpak Developer Demo currently shows the following
  information

  Download Size = 918.1 MB
  Installed Size = 257.5 KB

  This is inconsistent and confusing. For my case, it led me to thinking
  there was something wrong with Snap/flatpak packages. Why are they so
  huge! Then I had to do some research.

  It's my understanding this is due to possibly having to download and
  install a 'runtime' along with the application. Please correct me if
  my understanding is incorrect. In this case, as I don't have many
  flatpak runtimes, the huge download size is probably to download the
  runtimes. If I download another flatpak using the same runtime, the
  download size would be much smaller as it would not need to redownload
  the runtime But the install size is also not really 257.5 KB, as it is
  also going to install a huge runtime. The reason why we're listing
  installed size is to give an idea of how much disk space is going to
  be used anyways.

  Proposed resolutions
  1. Separate out application and runtimes in the display
  a. Download Size = 200 KB, 900 MB runtime
  b. Installed Size = 257.5 KB, 900 MB runtime
  2. Have both items include the runtime
  a. Download Size = 918.1 MB
  b. Installed Size = 918.2 MB
  3. Have both a total and a breakdown
  a. Download Size = 918.1 MB ( 200KB application, 900 MB runtime)
  b. Installed Size = 918.2 MB ( 257.5 KB application, 900 MB runtime)
  4. Separate out the runtimes as a dependency or something like that
  a. Download Size = 200 KB
  b. Installed Size = 257.2 KB
  This option is confusing as it would not give a good indicator of how
long the download would be. But maybe there is a better way overall to handle
dependencies like this in software center, so I just threw this in as an option

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1854379] Re: Snap packages sources are not stated on listings

2019-11-28 Thread Robert Ancell
This source field is only shown if the same app (as determined by
AppStream ID) is available from multiple sources (e.g. a Snap and a
Flatpak). In the case of snaps it wasn't showing because we haven't set
the "origin_hostname" field. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
software/merge_requests/374 proposes falling back to the "origin" field
(set to "Snap Store" for snaps.

We may also want to set the origin_hostname for snaps (to
"snapcraft.io"?) but this seems less readable than Snap Store.

I'd also change the second part of the patch to be clearer, i.e.

if (gtk_tree_model_iter_n_children (model, NULL) == 0)
gtk_widget_set_sensitive (dialog->input_bar, FALSE);

The first part of the patch is a workaround for a bug elsewhere which is
reporting things in the wrong order. The second part is a fix for a case
that wasn't being handled correctly. So both seem correct to me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1853584] Re: [18.04]Not able to adjust Audio input UI volume after connecting headset

2019-11-27 Thread Robert Ancell
@hugh - can you do this as a merge request on
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center ? It will be much
easier to review there.

First thing to note, this can be simplified:

if (gtk_tree_model_iter_n_children (model, NULL) == 1)
  active_input_update (dialog, input);

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1851127] Re: app page shows no install progress

2019-11-24 Thread Robert Ancell
The clicking out of a snap and returning is probably the same issue in
that we don't detect if an external client installs/removes snaps. This
is not easy to solve without snapd providing an efficient means of
notifying this (LP: #1768418). We could poll snapd, which is the same
effect as running 'snap changes' on the command line. But this would
have gnome-software (a long running process) constantly polling snapd.

Alan - do you think you've triggered the mechanism Seb described or
something else?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1846147] Re: Settings > Details > About > GNOME says "3.33.91" still

2019-09-30 Thread Robert Ancell
gnome-control-center pulls the value out of /usr/share/gnome/gnome-
version.xml which comes from gnome-desktop3-data.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1844799] [NEW] Use new snap banner format

2019-09-20 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Snaps now have a native banner format. The old screenshot method is no longer
supported and will result in banners no longer displaying.

[Test Case]
1. Open GNOME Software
2. Check banner shown in in the new format

[Regression Potential]
Some small risk of breaking banner code.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1843764] Re: sane-backends ftbfs in eoan (armhf)

2019-09-19 Thread Robert Ancell
glibc removed some emulated syscalls that didn't work properly, so this
is intended behaviour. Debian will have to pick up the same change when
they update glibc.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1843764] Re: sane-backends ftbfs in eoan (armhf)

2019-09-18 Thread Robert Ancell
It's indicating the some of the backends are no longer building on ARM,
e.g. for qcam:

*** qcam backend requires (ioperm, inb and outb) or portaccess functions
- disabling

So something changed that stops them building...

  The change is in the event handler for the specific keybinding so it
shouldn't have any side effect if that feature is working

  I press Ctrl + F to open up the search bar to search but I find that
  immediately after I press Ctrl + F, the bar closes and resets to its
  original state. I can visibly see the bar show up as well as it
  closing immediately. I have tested this functionality in the gnome-
  software-center from other distributions and the master branch and
  this works. I think this is a theme issue. I am using the default
  Ubuntu theme by the way.

The main issue is when I updated to 0.6.55 the new Meson based build
systemd didn't build with systemd support by default. So I've uploaded a
build with this enabled. There may still be an underlying issue, but
this should fix the eoan issues.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1841818] [NEW] Populate featured snaps from ubuntu-firstrun category

2019-08-28 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
There is a hidden category in the snap store called "ubuntu-firstrun" which
shows appropriate snaps to show the user. This category was created after
gnome-initial-setup had Snap support added to it and used the "featured"
category.

[Test Case]
1. Open GNOME Initial Setup
2. Go to final page

Expected result:
Snaps are shown from the "ubuntu-firstrun" category.

Observed result:
Snaps are shown from the "featured" category.

[Regression Potential]
Very low. Just the name of the category is changed and has been in use since
cosmic.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1742997] Re: Newly installed applications are not showing in "Installed"

2019-07-29 Thread Robert Ancell
I've managed to find a bug that stops apps appearing in the installed
list when they are *reinstalled*.

To reproduce:
1. Open GNOME Software
2. Go to installed tab
3. Click on an installed app
4. Remove this app
5. Install this app
6. Click back button to return to installation page.

The app won't show in the installation page, this is because the app row
was animated to collapse, but not removed. When the app is installed
again G-S thinks the row is already there and it doesn't show it.

If you've had G-S open for a long time then you might be installing an
app you had previously installed at launch time or after.

Can anyone reproduce this issue with an app that was *not* previously
installed?

  The Snap Store changed the names of some of the sections. This means that
these are no longer mapped to the XDG categories used in GNOME Software. See
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/merge_requests/279

  [Test Case]
  1. Open GNOME Software
  2. Go to graphics categeory.

  Expected result:
  Snaps are shown

  Observer result:
  Only .debs are shown

  [Regression Potential]
  Fix is just to change the name mappings, should be low risk.

  A newer snapd-glib is available that adds support for new features in snapd.
snapd-glib has an SRU exception as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SnapdGlibUpdates

  [Test Case]
  The reverse depends of snapd-glib should continue to function, this is
currently:
  - gnome-software
  - gnome-initial-setup
  - pulseaudio

  [Regression Potential]
  Any new release has a risk of introducing bugs, this is mitigated by
automatic regression tests.
