I have given up fighting scanning on PCs using 18.04. It is easier to reboot the PC to windows, do the scanning from windows and use Ext2 volume manager to send the files back to the drives used by Ubuntu. Devices and software (PDF Studio Pro) that worked very well under 16.04 don't work under

The solution given above works correctly untul evolution (3.10.4) encounters a problem such as pop summary not available or mail server timed out. It looks like evolution wants an immediate response from a pop mail server or it throughs all sorts of bogus errors plus removes the passwords. John
