I just checked and the new version rewrites the /usr/share/applications/inkscape.desktop So you have to re edit it by adding to the end of the [Drawing Shortcut Group] Name=No Globel Menu Exec=env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 inkscape TargetEnvironment=Unity I also found I had to re-drag the Icon on to

Running incscape normally for me without the UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 inkscape I see an icon with a no enter red sign for all icons. UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 inkscape Well it still works for me! so the may be something like a version change or something else, I am on: (some menu's have no icons!) $

I don't know but bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1066573 Says, it it works (unless desktop-wide disabled via gtk settings for all menus). So maybe, but probably not ;) (just a wild guess!) Could it have something to do with buttons-have-icons settings:
