I can confirm that this bug still exists with TB 17.0 and Linux Mint 14
(not really ubuntu, but this sounds like the same problem).

With TB 17.0, and default setup on Quantal, when thunderbird maxes out
at 100% it also causes compiz to max out at 100% cpu - which freezes my
other applications too. Especially on my dual-core netbook that's a real
pain! I found that blocking of compiz can be avoided by turning off the
animations
And also still in TB 17.0 (Ubuntu 12.10).

High CPU usage happens to me probably twice per hour during the day when
Thunderbird will use 100% CPU and block for up to a minute. Looking
forward to a prompt release of 15.0.1 for Precise.
