Based on multiple reports (#8,#9,#15), the problem persists in
Libreoffice 4 up to veresion 4.0.6.2. I am re-opening this bug for that
reason.

Thanks for closing the bug. I originally left it open because other people
reported the problem persisted. For me, it is fixed since changing to
libreoffice 4, so I couldn't provide any additional information for debugging.

As a tempory workaround, I discovered that when I disabled the following
3 settings the problem stopped:
In the User Interface section:
- Screen font antialiasing
In the Graphics output section:
- Use hardware acceleration
- Use Anti-Antialiasing
You can access all these settings via: Tools
Problem persists in Version 4.0.2.2.
