Further research: I can work around the problem provided I turn off the internet connection and manually set up the IMAP and SMTP settings. Provided I set the SMTP to mail.crosswire.org I am allowed to put in a security exception and after that, I can change the SMTP address to a different one

This bug has been in Thunderbird for some time - it appears in all Ubuntu releases from at least 10.04. I have copied the .thunderbird into each new release so have not seen the bug until now. I think it should be possible to demonstrate it by using a false username etc. Note that the password
