I'm not sure treating bug 1849484 separately to this one is the right
answer. Although it's understandable that Wayland and Xorg sessions will
exhibit different behaviour and different bugs, the common factor is
still the same hardware and kernel. So it still sounds like a hardware
or kernel problem. Therefore a common problem between the two bug
reports.

I take it back, it just happened again. Apparently it's intermittent.

I can't determine for certain whether it happens under X, because (a) as
I just noted, it's intermittent, and (b) my monitor has an entirely
different issue under X, see
