These are two different bugs actually, as the right-click one on startup
isn't due to missing texture but to private window to have a size yet.

Found it. The problem is caused by having both:
Ubuntu Dock
Ubuntu AppIndicators
enabled AND an app like jEdit that uses AppIndicators.

So far 'jedit' is the only affected app I can find. And I can unfreeze
the shell by logging in remotely and killing the 'java' process.
Annoyingly, building gnome-shell manually (even from Ubuntu source)
doesn't exhibit the bug. I'm missing something.
