So, the problem is the laptop monitor is off until some application
turns it on? If you want to permanently disable the output add
video=LVDS-1:d to your kernel commandline. Otherwise, it is a policy
issue that needs to be enforced across the entire system.

Thank you for your reply. This problem was specific to Ubuntu 9.10 and
works fine in newer versions.
